The web page address Every web page has a

unique address known as the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) specifying the exact location (the computer) where the web page is located

A URL has distinct parts separated by dots, each part having a special significance

A typical address is, for example, http://www.bbc.co.uk

http:// means Hypertext Transfer Protocol – the rules used by the Internet for sending and receiving data between computers

www means World Wide Web and is in most, but not all, URLs

bbc.co.uk is the domain name, showing the organisation owning the site and it has several parts .co is the type of site, in

this case a UK commercial organisation

.uk is the country code

Navigating the Web Most web pages

have links called hypertext links or hyperlinks

These let you jump to another web page within the website, to another place on the same web page or to other websites

When you move the mouse pointer around the screen, its shape changes to a hand when it is over a link

Links are often blue, underlined text, but they may also be pictures

Refreshing and stopping a web pageRefreshing a web page Browsers store the pages

you browse as a cache file on your disk

If you are unsure that you are looking at the latest version of the page or you get a message that a web page cannot be displayed, click the Refresh button to reload the page from the Internet, not from the cache

Stopping a web page downloading
