FREE DENTRISTRY DAY FOR FOLKS IN NEED

On Thursday March 14 at the Wallenpaupack Brewing Company in Hawley, come raise a pint and join in a game of trivia to help Honesdale Rotary fight polio worldwide. The funds will go toward the International Rotary’s End Polio campaign, which has reduced polio cases by 99.9% since the 1980s. The event goes from 6pm – 9pm, $10 gets you inside, a beer and a ticket for a door prize. For $25 a team – two to six per team—you can also compete in a trivia game, emceed by Trivia Host Adam Owens from the Bold Gold Radio group.

“This will be a fun night for a truly worthwhile project,” says Andy Chapman, Honesdale Rotary. “Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as sixty cents, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. A little bit of money goes a long way!”

Check out Honesdale Rotary on Facebook. The group meets the last three Tuesdays of every month at 12noon at Cordaro’s in Honesdale and the first Tuesday in the evening at a local restaurant.

2019 IGA USA HOMETOWN PROUD RETAILERS

Pictured from left to right, Mark Batenic former President and CEO of IGA, Inc., Allison Chory daughter of Jim Shook, Jim Shook President of Lake Region IGA, John Ross current President and CEO of IGA, Inc. being honored in San Diego

California at the IGA Global Rally February 2019.

Across the nation, IGA USA store owners work day‐in and day‐out to serve their communities with the kind of personalized service and attention to detail that only comes from a locally owned IGA store.

Each year, IGA honors a select few who stand out as the best retailers among the nation’s more than 30,000 independent retailers. From this winners’ circle of IGA Hometown Proud Retailers, IGA then chooses its IGA USA International Retailer of the Year.

Jim Shook has spent over 30 years of his life as an IGA retailer, more than of half of which has been as the owner and operator of Lake Region IGA in Hawley, Pennsylvania, a sleepy resort town with fewer than 2,000 full-time residents. While the town itself might be a little behind, Jim is anything but. He has his nose on the trends, implementing improvements aplenty across the store all in the name of customer satisfaction.

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT AT COVE HAVEN April showers bring May flowers, but love is blooming all year long over at Cove Haven Resort in Lakeville!

You know Cove Haven has been the premiere destination for romantic getaways, date nights, and just the place for when you need to fall even further in love, but it’s also one of the best places to go see entertainment on any given night of the week!

Guests of the resort can experience headline entertainment 7 nights a week, with performers ranging from live bands to DJs, comedians, and specialty acts like hypnotists, jugglers, and magicians, all of whom add elements of comedy and crowd interaction into their sets. With featured bands like Eleven Eleven, Kartune, Dueling Pianos, M-80, and other local favorites, it’s rarely ever a dull moment on stage at Cove Haven Resort; but for those of you who are tired of dull nights need to know that our nightclub is open to everyone- not just guests of the resort!

That’s right: Cove Haven’s nightly entertainment is available to locals as well- reservations not needed! There’s no cover charge to see the most exciting performers on stage, making this an easy and accessible choice for a night out with your significant other or just another way to have a few drinks and some fun with friends.

The entertainment isn’t just limited to Cove Haven’s Champagne Palace Nightclub, either. In fact, Cove Haven Resort features four different locations where guests can enjoy their live performers, including our 600 person capacity Champagne Palace nightclub, our heart-shaped lounge in the dining room known as Cupid’s Corner; the Lookout Lounge, which features a sprawling scenic view of Lake Wallenpaupack and a back deck for some summer lovin’, and Spooner’s Sports Bar Grille, where entertainment reigns supreme with live performers and with available activities like pool tables, basketball, and an arcade.

If you want to make it a full date night, you can also get dinner and drinks on property and enjoy a bite to eat over at Spooner’s Sports Bar Grille while trying some of the signature cocktails the resort has to offer. The most popular libation at Cove Haven is the appropriately-named Passion Potion, a delicious concoction that also comes with a souvenir glass.

Perhaps you want your date night to take on a more romantic tone- in which case, you can make dinner reservations at the Coliseum Restaurant. 7 days of the week and 7 different menus, one for each day of the week, each with a different theme so to give you a variety of ways to satiate your appetite.

Cove Haven also features headline entertainment throughout the year. Those interested in seeing these events can purchase tickets online in advance and see names like Cedric the Entertainer (May 19th), the Allman Betts Band (September 1st), and Ken Jeong (November 3rd). The full schedule of entertainers can be found online atwww.covepoconoresorts.com.

WAYNE MEMORIAL JOINS RURAL HEALTH MODEL Three hospitals in the 20th Senatorial District were chosen to participate in the PA Rural Health Model, which seeks to improve patient health in rural communities while ensuring that the hospitals serving those residents remain financially healthy. They are among five hospitals statewide that were selected for the program. The announcement was made today by state Department of Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine while other administration officials, legislators, hospital CEOs and others looked on. Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Wayne County and two Susquehanna County-based hospitals, Endless Mountains Health System in Montrose and Barnes-Kasson County Hospital in Susquehanna Depot, will join UPMC Kane Community Hospital in McKean County and Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital in Lycoming County as part of the innovative and collaborative effort to improve rural health care. Sen. Lisa Baker, R-20th District, welcomed the news and thanked all those involved from the federal, state and local level for having the vision to see this was the best prescription for many rural health centers. “This is really a lifeline effort to attend to the long-term health of the crucial medical facilities in the area I represent and similar areas of our state. This event is testament that the key players are committed to seeing this through to successful implementation and sustainable operation.” The Rural Health Model is an alternative payment model, transitioning hospitals from a fee-for-service model to a global budget payment. Instead of hospitals getting paid when someone visits the hospital, they will receive a predictable

amount of money. Payment for the global budget will include multiple-payers, including private and public insurers. Through this change in payment model, the hospitals will be able to transform care locally to better meet the health needs of the community. This includes opportunities to assess items that may traditionally fall outside of the role of the hospital, like transportation and broadband internet access. “Addressing the problems facing rural hospitals and health care facilities is a matter of high urgency because there are not a lot of options in the neighborhood. For good reasons these hospitals are designated critical access and acute care facilities. The economies of scale rarely work in their favor. Although their emergency rooms do not see the heavy traffic that urban hospitals do, they still have to be prepared for all contingencies. Meanwhile, government piles on requirements while squeezing tighter on reimbursements,” Baker said. “When facilities close, it is catastrophic. One of the painful lessons learned since the medical malpractice crisis is that practitioners who depart and facilities that close rarely return to service or operation,” Baker added. “People in my area who must now travel an hour for maternity care are familiar with that consequence.” In addition to the model, Sen. Baker has introduced legislation that would create the Rural Health Redesign Center to develop a more predictable payment plan and create a fixed budget to stabilize reimbursements. Support would also be provided to offer new community health services and programs to meet key needs such as behavioral health and substance abuse. It would be funded by a $25 million grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, as well as funds from private sources moving forward. SB 314 is currently in the Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee. Companion legislation sponsored by Rep. Pickett, HB 248, is in the House Health Committee.
