    The Samputa method

COURTESY:'GITA JAYANTI' By SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA

    Submitted by Balagopal

At the Sivananda Ashram, Rishikesh, the holy and auspicious Gita Jayanti is observed every year on a grand scale:

All the aspirants wake up at 4 am and meditate on the Lord. From sunrise to sunset there is unbroken recitation of theGita. The Samputa method is used, that is, before and after each verse the following Samputa is recited:

    "Sarva dharmaan parityajya maamekam sharanam vraja;

Aham twaa sarvapaapebhyo mokshayishyaami maa shucha."

Thus, between two verses, this verse is recited twice. This is an extremely efficacious method of earning the Grace of tSupreme Lord and the Gita, the Mother.

Aspirants fast on the day, as it is also the Ekadashi day. Competitions are held among the little children, to develop thetalents in the recitation of the Gita. In the case of the slightly older children, they are given a chance to deliver discoursThis is a wonderful way of encouraging them to study the scripture.

In the evening, a special Satsang is held at which scholars, Yogis and Sannyasins discourse upon the Gita. Leaflets, pamphlets and books containing the teachings of the Gita, as also translations of the holy scripture, are distributed.

Take a resolve on Gita Jayanti that you will read at least one discourse every day. Recite the fifteenth discourse beforetaking your meals. This is done at the Sivananda Ashram.

Keep a pocket-sized edition of the Gita with you at all times. Mark a few verses in it which inspire you. Everyday, whileyou wait for your bus or train, or whenever you have a little leisure, pull out the book and read these verses. You will beever inspired.

May you all lead the life taught by the Gita! May the Gita, the blessed Mother of the Vedas, guide and protect you! Maynourish you with the milk of the ancient wisdom of the Upanishads!

Glory to Lord Krishna, the Divine Teacher! Glory to Sri Vyasa, the poet of poets, who composed the Gita!

May his blessings be upon you all!

OHM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VASUDEVAYA:WHY WE WORSHIP GOD?

    M P R Nair.

Principle of God or Iswara Tatvam:

We worship God because we have Bhakthi or love towards God. Bhakthi really means rememberinalways God. Swaswaroopa sathanam Bhakthi., meaning discovery of ones own soul (atmswaroopa) is Bhakthi. All the other rituals are only the ways and means to reach that goal. Therealization of God in oneself is Jnana. It requires Vairagya, hesitation towards excessive worldlpleasures. Realization of Brahman or Self-realization, requires Bhakthi, Jnanam and Varagyam.

Sadhakas by repeated Sadhanas, like repetition of Gods name and constant prayers with austeritiein all its sacredness and sanctity, become Sidhas. At that stage, God becomes the same as man. Butit is not an easy task to become a Sidha.

Isavasya Upanishad says:Om Isavasyamidam sarvam yatkica jagatyam jagat |tena tyaktena bhujitha ma grdhah kasyasvid dhanam..., meaning:

Isam (the One God) is present (inhabits) here everywhere; the entire universe is covered by thSupreme Being;live a happy life in this world, enjoy your existence; and do not suffer.

Ulppathimcha vinasham cha , bhoothanam agathim gathimvethividyam avidyam cha savachyo Bhagavan ithi

It is another definition of God.

    Thathathvameesvara: sakshath paramathmethi geeyathe

    Thadeva jeevasamjnamsyath samkhaathopadhi samyutham

meaning, the principle of God is that, it is the Absolute Truth which is non dual, Unique and Indivisible(Ekam and Aparischinnam). It is Paramathma or Iswara or Sat-Chit-Ananda. The same exists invarious forms and names in different living beings.

In the Vishnu Purana (6.5.79) Parashara Rishidefines Bhagavan as:

aivaryasya samagrasya vryasya yaasa riyajna-vairgyayo caiva ann bhaga itgan, meaning-

strength(Potency); fame, wealth, knowledge, beauty, detachment. Ithi shannan iva Bhagavan

Sruthi, refers to God as Brahmam; Smrthi, as Paramathma and Puranas, as Bhagavan. They are alhttp://group.yahoo.com/groups/guruvayur Page- 12

the same; the great ocean of boundless mercy and grace. God alone is the Reality. HE flourishesubiquitously. His Power is quite unlimited and there is no other power in the world to control it. In notime it can access the peak of the highest mountain and the depth of the deepest sea and causeexplosion there. No one can predict its actions. Only a very small fraction of His power is given to us,the whole living beings. As His creations, we owe him worship to replenish His power. Love leads theDevotees to God. He is Transcendent, Immanent, Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent. HE isnot an object; HE is the Subject, the only one subject. Our Sanathana Dharma teaches us that there isDivinity in anything and everything. Worshipping God through Bhakthimargam is proved to be easierthan Karmamargam and Jnanamargam. The saying goes that Manthramoolam gurorvakyam.., andhence a S`at-Guru can help facilitate Self-Realization. Also, Adi Sankara re-iterates that Isvarogururatmeti ... , meaning, God is the same as Guru and Self. A Sat-Guru can therefore make usAdhikari for God-Realization, which is the ultimate purpose of human birth.

    Meeting a S`at-Guru:

I had the fortune of having Darshan of H.H. Sree Maharanyam Muraleedhara Swamiji of MadhurapuAshram, Madras. It was a quite unique experience that ever remain fresh in my memory. The Ashramwas like Vrindavan, every inch of it was permeated with the sublime presence of the Lord. The placwas exquisitely beautiful. It was almost surrounded by mountains. On one side of the Ashram, beautifuand healthy cows along with their sweet calves were seen grazing freely. It really defied descriptionThe atmosphere echoed with sweet and melodious Akhandanama Sankeerthan. On the other side o

the Ashram, we found Tulasi plants, like a little dense forest amidst various kinds of other floweringplants. Reaching closer, devotees were seen reciting Hare Rama keerthan, while perambulatinaround a tall and shining lighted brass lamp, near a most beautiful and effulgent vigraha of LordKrishna, in a big and grand prayer hall. Devotees were deeply immersed in singing the Lords namand playing musical instruments according to its tune, while they were walking. My joy and ecstasyknew no bounds; I felt that I was in some heavenly world. Unknowingly within seconds we were also ithat stream of devotees, singing His glorious names.

The Veda Patasala on one side of the Ashram, like that we heard of in ancient Nalanda anThakshasila, attracts special attention. The Sanctum Sanctorum there, is known as Namadwaarbeing followed in the same way as those of Chaithanya Maha Prabhuji of the 15 th centuary. Swamhas started many such Namadwaars at different places in various parts of India and they are a

functioning perfectly well with increased attendance of devotees, day by day. A long cherished desire oSwamiji was materialized here in America at Manvel, Houston, when the Mayor inaugurated the firsNamadwaar, outside India on Sunday, 28th February, 2010. The Namadwaar is a power house of DivinPrayers, for universal peace and harmony by the manifestation of the power of Divinity in eacindividual through the very simple path of chanting the Divine Name. Prayers to the Almighty from timimmemorial are most powerful; they will never go in vain. More things are wrought by prayer, than thiworld dreams of. Prayers, powered by the Divine names, are extra ordinarily powerful. All our ancienscriptures extol this fact in unequivocal terms. We are really fortunate and blessed for partly being thinstrumental inspiration in the enlightening process of as many people as possible.

    The existence of Universe:

We are watching these days that the most modern Science is coming to agree that it is because of thetransformation of the Supreme Power that the Universe exists. The processes of Creation, Sustenanceand Dissolution are taking place on a regular basis on account of this Supreme Power. Most modernbooks of Science like Hyper Science, After Einstein etc. are throwing light on this unknown Poweand more and more researches are on the way finding out the truth in our old adages of the yore, anthose in our Ancient Scriptures. I am sure that even if all the great Scientists of the world try togetherthey cannot even create a tiny ant, not to speak of man, the number one miracle of His creation. Buthe all embracing power of God, binds everything in the world together, since it is equally related toeverything alike. The God is not in heaven, He is within our reach, very near to us, in us, around usand we can touch and feel Him, if we can overcome the delusion or Maya, His own creation, between

Him and us. Who knows it is not His protective shield, for His own self-defense. I dont know.http://group.yahoo.com/groups/guruvayur Page- 13

    The purport of Temples:

Temples are constructed following Tantrasamuchayas, also compromising between sacred anspiritual ideals, worldly, secular and local restrictions. They are intended to limit and accommodate afirst a fraction of the Power of God therein, with the help of Agama Sastras etc., physically andmentally into various units, so that people can access and enjoy the blessings of that Supreme Powermore easily, than to stand aghast at its manifestly voluminous, invisible and invincible form. It is for oucomfort and convenience that temples are made, installing there Moorthy or Moorthies in lovable formsof the Supreme Consciousness, obeying the rules of Vastu, and also combining with pragmat

concerns. The various Moorthies are made inter connecting mutually their names and forms for us tconcentrate our attention in worshipping them in front of us. They are often divided and given separatassignments of the affairs of our day to day life, like for removing hindrances Lord Ganapathy, LorDhanwanthari Moorthy for curing diseases, Lord Maheswara for Ayur dosha, and Lord Maha Vishnfor peaceful life etc.The temples turn our static piety into dynamic spirituality, when it becomes aSanctum-Sanctorum, by appropriate rituals and sacred observances as per temple rules. Theffulgence emerging from the Sreekovil of such a temple, makes us enjoy the immeasurable aninexplicable experience of bliss of ecstasy of devotion to God. Worship of God, in its propeperspective, establishes Divine Presence in abundance there, and it enables the Divine Energy withius to manifest itself, besides granting favors by Him. It is laid down in our Scriptures that idols of godsworshipped in our temples are considered as the incarnations of the chosen deities of devotees o

personal gods. They are known as Archavatharas of God, as different manifestations of thBRAHMAN. The more we worship properly, the more will be the Divine Grace there, and that is whwe experience the impact of saturated Devotion by having Darsan at Guruvayoor, SabarimalaChottanikkara, Vadakkum-Nathan etc; they are oceans of Devotion while many temples are liktributaries, rivers, backwaters and the like. Ekam Sat Viprah Bahudha Vadanti.., meaning, thUniversal Reality is the same , but different people call it by different names.

They are worshipped by people using elaborate rituals prescribed in the Agama Shastras. The idolthus become Moorthies, with full Divine Presence in them and then they lavishly shower blessings otrue Devotees. It is like, there is water on earth, but in order to get it for drinking without contaminationwe want a good well or tap or the like. There may be milk all over the body of a cow, but we could get ionly through its udder. A fan can give you breeze, only when it is switched on, and the like. The templ

is the LKG for learning Bhakthi.

    The easiest Bhakthi Marga:

Satsangs bring together the similarly placed souls for common worship, service, charityeducation and culture. Satsang is like nectar. It is precious. As water diminishes when we drink it, wehave to replenish the deficiency of the Divine Power, by mantra-sakthi and restore the grace, always tthe brim.

In KaliSantharanopanishad, writen about 5000 years ago, it is laid down that, at the end of DwaparaYuga, when Brahmarshi Narada asked Lord Brahma, as to what could be done for salvation iKaliyuga, Brahma gave Narada, the following mantra: (This is the one Swamiji uses in all h

Namadwaars):-Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare,

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare,

and said that by the mere recital of this Mahamantra, consisting of 16 times the holy names of the Lordman gets relieved from all the evils of Kaliyuga and that he could not find any other way to get-rid of themiseries, though he searched all the four Vedas. Sage Narada then asked Lord Brahma, Lord, whaare the rules to be observed for reciting this Mahamantra? . In reply Lord Brahma said There are nspecial rules to be observed for reciting this Mahamantra; it can be chanted by any one at any timewithout regard to purity or impurity and anywhere and everywhere. They are really manthrastrasmeaning arrows of manthra, perfectly fruitful, if hit at the target. It will definitely hit if done with DivinProvidence and dedication

    After giving us all Vedic Scriptures, Brahmarshi VedaVyasa said that he had searched all Sastras anfinally found out that the very essence of all Sastras is to worship Lord Narayana, througNamasankeerthan, for real salvation in this age of Kali. Our Scriptures also tell us ;

    Dhyanal krite; yanjai; tretayam; dwaparerarchanad,

Yadapnoti, tadapnoti, kalou sankeerthya Kesavam, meaning,

for getting Salvation, meditation was the way in Krita Yugga or Satya Yuga; Yanja or sacrifice was thway in Treta Yuga; Archana or worshp of idols was done in Dwaapara Yuga. Namasankeerthan is thonly way to achieve moksha in Kali Yuga. All our Scriptures exhort us for Namasankeerthan in thisKaliYuga.

In the 11th Canto (ekadasa skanda) in Srimad Bhagavatha, it is written: ,

    Namasankeerthanam yasya, sarva papa pranashanam

Pranamo dukha shamana: tam namami Harim param. ,

that is, prostrate unto that Supreme Power Sree Hari, the singing of whose Divine names, obliterateall sins, and paying respects to whom attenuates all the sorrows of the world. Namasankeerthanamcauses inner transformation.

    Bhagavat Gita re-iterates that Jnana is the highest state in life. As such, how can one attain the highesstate by merely chanting the Lords Divine names? Our Swamiji answers the question simply quotingfrom the Gita itself as;

    Swalpamalpasya dharmasya, trayate mahato bhayat, meaning;

even if you perform the smallest Dharma, I will protect you from the worst fear. Smallest dharma ireally Namasankeerthan, and ignorance or ajnana, is the worst fear and enemy. Annihilation of anjanis verily, Jnana.

All famous Philosophies of great Sages like that of Madhvacharya, Ramanujacharya, SankaracharyaSri Vallabhacharya, etc. teach us the importance of reciting Nama or Gods name. God is love and ouhearts should abound in unconditional love for God. We should believe in God, as a fish believe iwater.

    Sharanagathy:

God or Deva has Grace and Effulgence. Only complete surrender to God or Sharanagathy, is easies

way to realize the fullness and grandeur of His love. God is the only reality; the only Truth. One cannobut sing His glory, because we are all parts of the God - individual units of microcosms of the hugevoluminous and indefinable Macrocosm. The Supreme Power is Brahman, the Paramatma, and it iinfinite. It is the all pervading Consciousness. We are jeevatmas, the infinitesimals; the relation is likthat of an ocean and a drop of water, thereof. If Brahman is fire, jeevatma is a spark, therein. Thunion of jeevatma with Paramatma or the Jeevatma-Paramatma aikyam, or Pindandam merging witBrhmandam or the Microcosm becoming one with the Macrocosm, is the ultimate aim of our birth and will be repeated until the last life exists. Only God, the Supreme Truth is perennial; everything else iephemeral. Sanathana Dharma, the perennial wisdom, makes it clear to us. We should try tconcentrate on things which last long, for only it could give us permanent joy. So, we shoulconcentrate on God. The higher the soul evolves the more spiritual the understanding becomes, unt

rapport with the Divine Spirit is attained. This is atonement and it makes a man perfect. For makineasily eligible to be loved by God, we must remain grateful, humble, patient, generous, show responsebe motivating, be brave in all our actions, be disciplined in prosperity, spread good ideas, fetch namefame and reputation to the family and to the country by dedication to work, be intuitive, and also havpatience, persistence, perseverance, and providence.

    What, if we negate God:

If we negate or contradict, God, He will not punish us.

    Srimad Bhagavatham says (11-2-37):

Bhayam dwiteeyabhiniveshata: sya deesadapetasya , viparyayo smrti:

tanmayayato budha aabhajetham, bhaktyaika yogam Gurudevatatma., meaning:

one who turns away from God, loses his real self and falls a prey to the erroneous belief due to HiMaya and believes that the body is the self and finally he is endangered and he himself will be put introubles and ruined at the end. No one can save him.

Whom can we emulate in Bhakthi?:

In Bhakthi and Worship, we can emulate the example of Bhaktha Hanuman.

Deha drshtya tu dasoham, jeeva drshtya tvadamsaka:

    Vastutastu tvamevahamiti me nischitamati:, meaning,

Apparently, I am your servant, but really I am your jeevamsa, and in that sense you and I are the same

The inter relation between Bhagavan, Bhakthi and Bhaktha is the real Bhagavatha Dharma, which wshould follow invariably, for a meaningful and peaceful life.

Even though there is no difference between you and me in reality, I am yours but you are not in my control. The waves arecontrolled by the sea but the ocean is not under the control of the waves.

According to the sruthi text 'thath thvam asi' the self is identical with Brahman. So Sankara says that the real ' I ' is the Lor

only, who is the inner self of all, from the visishtadvaita point of view also. Then there is no difference between you and m

in reality, says Sankara, I am you , aham brahmasmi. But, speaking as a devotee he says, "I am yours but you are not in m

control. " The waves are in the ocean and controlled by the ocean but the ocean is not controlled by the waves because it ca

exist even without the waves whereas the waves cannot exist without the ocean.

The Lord says in the Gita, "mathsThaani sarvabhoothaani na chaaham theshvavasThithaH, all beings are in Me but I

am not in them." Then He says "na cha mathsThaani bhoothaani paSya me yogamaiSvaram. Butthey are not in Me, see

my all pervading power." This means, the Lord is all-pervading like the aakaasa but not attached to them in any way. This

idea is expressed here that the sea controls the waves in the sense that the very existence of the sea is responsible for the

waves but the sea is not affected by the waves in the sense that the existence of the sea does not depend on the waves.

Oh Lord who upheld the mountain and who is the younger brother of Indra, foe to the clan of asuras, who is having the Sunand the Moon as the eyes, When you, with lustre are seen, will there not be disappearance of the samsara?

The Lord is the one who lifted the Govardhana mountain as Krishna and was born to Kasyapa and Adhithi as the younger

brother of Indra in Vamanavathatra because of which He is known as Upendhra. He proved to be the enemies of asuras in al

    Ajnash-chaashraddha-dhaanashcha samshay-aatmaa vinashyati;

Naayam lokosti na paro na sukham samshayaatmanah || 4.40 ||

The ignorant, the faithless, the doubting self proceeds to destruction; there is neither this

world nor the other nor happiness for the doubting.

Up until the previous verses Krishna had been emphasizing that one who has complete faith and devotion and engages in

persistent efforts, would in due course of time gain knowledge of the Self- knowing which one remains in bliss always. In

this sloka, Krishna now reiterates the same point but making the assertion in the reverse fashion one who does not

have faith and devotion would in due course of time be completely destroyed. Swami Chinmayananda explains that even

if one doesnt have a deep spiritual understanding of spiritual matters, one must have the willingness to be open and the

readiness to attempt to study the scriptures. Those who are constantly in doubt and engage in intellectual exercises

without the willingness to practice and undertake sincere sadhana will not have any happiness or peace, neither in this

    life, nor hereafter.

He who has renounced actions by Yoga, whose doubts are rent asunder by knowledge,

and who is self-possessed,actions do not bind him, O Arjuna!

When one engages in Yoga (work without clinging to the results), and when ones doubts have been removed by

knowledge, i.e. the understanding of the real Self in all beings, then such an individual is no longer bound by his actions,

there is no accumulaiton of Karma for such a person, and he becomes free from the cycle of birth and death.

It is only the sense of my-ness and I-ness that is at the root of all suffering; when we work with the sure

knowledge that we work for God, that the results are given by God, and that the same divine spirit exists in all beings,

then we no longer suffer from feelings of anger, jealousy, envy, or hatred. Being freed of these vasanas, one is no longer

    bound by ones actions.

Therefore, with the sword of knowledge (of the Self) cut asunder the doubt of the self

born of ignorance, residing in thy heart, and take refuge in Yoga; Arise, O Bhaarata!

Krishna now asks Arjuna to take up his arms and fight He has imparted to Arjuna the weapon of Knowledge, of the

supreme Self residing within, which leads to Yoga, union with the Self. Arjuna needs to now cut through all doubts and

take refuge in that Yoga. Significantly, here Arjuna is addressed as Bharata, once again Krishna reminding him that it is

not for his own sake, but it is for the sake of the country that he needs to fight.

Thus ends the discourse on the Yoga of Renunciation of Action in Knowledge.

The discourse has as its major theme, the cultivation of an equanimous mind, which is the beginning of Knowledge; to be

stable inspite of Lifes constant fluctuations, to be aware that change is the only constant and that what is required is a

mind that rises above it, undisturbed by the environment and working in the sure knowledge that all actions are for God,

and fruits of all actions are just that fruits granted by God, and through it all to be firmly attached to God. Eesha

vaasyam idam sarvam says the Isha Upanishad. The Supreme Power resides everywhere; All actions performed with

that Knowledge become an offering. The message is not to fear and renounce, not to escape, but to face and fight.

    (to be continued..)

True and sincere surrender unto the Lord is the essence of Bhakti (God-love). I am Thine, All is Thine. Thy Will be done,

my Lord This is the best Sharanaagathi Mantra or prayer of self-surrender. Seek His will. Do His will. Surrender to His

will. You will become one with the Cosmic Will. ...Swami Sivananda.

"NAMASKAR" - Meaning and Benefits You Never Knew

    Submitted by Anil Kumar

The word 'Namaskar' is derived from the root 'namaha', which means paying obeisance (Namaskar) or

salutation. From Science of Justice - 'Namaha' is a physical action expressing that 'you are superior to mein all qualities and in every way'..

Worldly Benefits - By doing Namaskar to a deity or a Saint, unknowingly their virtues and capabilities areimpressed upon our minds. Consequently we start emulating them, thus changing ourselves for the better.

Spiritual Benefits - Increase in humility and reduction of ego / Enhancement in the spiritual emotion ofsurrender and gratitude / Gaining the Sattva component and faster spiritual progress. We receive the

highest amount of Sattva component from the posture (mudra) of Namaskar. By doing Namaskar to Deitiesor Saints we receive subtle frequencies emitted by them, e.g. Frequencies of Sattva or Bliss.

How does one do Namaskar to an individual of the same age group? When meeting someone of the same age-group do Namaskar by joining the fingers and placing tips of the

thumbs on the Anahat chakra (at the centre of the chest). This type of Namaskarincreases the spiritualemotion of humility in the embodied soul. Sattva frequencies from the universe are attracted by the fingers

(which act as an antenna) and are then transmitted to the entire body through the thumbs which haveawakened the Anahat chakra. This activates the soul energy of the embodied soul. In addition, by doing

Namaskar in this manner to each other, frequencies of blessings are also transmitted.

What is correct method & science of doing Namaskar to God?

    A. 'While paying obeisance to God, bring the palms together.1. The fingers should be held loose (not straight and rigid) while joining the hands or palms.

    2. The fingers should be kept close to each other without leaving any space between them.3. The fingers should be kept away from the thumbs.

    4. The inner portion of the palms should not touch each other and there should be some space betweenthem.

Note: The stage of awakening of spiritual emotion (Bhav) is important to the seeker at the primary level.

Hence, for awakening spiritual emotion (Bhav), he should keep space in between the joined hands, whereaa seeker who is at the advanced level should refrain from leaving such space in between the palms to

awaken the unexpressed spiritual emotion (Bhav).B. After joining the hands one should bow and bring the head forward..

    C. While tilting the headforward, one should place the thumbs at the mid-brow region, I.e. At the point

between the eyebrows and try to concentrate on the feet of the Deity.D. After that, instead of bringing the folded hands down immediately, they should be placed on the mid-

chest region for a minute in such way that the wrists touch the chest; then only should the hands bebrought down.

    Underlying Science in this action

    A. The fingers should not be stiff while bringing the palms together because this will lead to a decrease inSattva component from the vital and mental sheaths and thus increase the raja component in them. By

keeping the fingers relaxed, the subtlest Sattva component will get activated. With the strength of this

energy, embodied souls are able to fight powerful distressing energies.B. In the Namaskar posture, the joined fingers act as an antenna to assimilate the Chaitanya (Divine

consciousness) or the Energy transmitted by a Deity. While joining the palms, the fingers must touch eachother because leaving space between the fingers will result in accumulation of energy in that space. This

energy will be immediately transmitted in various directions; therefore the seeker's body will lose thebenefit of this potent energy.

    C. About the space to be maintained between the palms:For a seeker at the primary level, it is advisable to leave space between the palms; it is not necessary for a

seeker at an advanced level to leave space between the palms.D. After joining the palms, bow a little. This posture puts pressure on the navel and activates the five vital

energies situated there. Activation of these vital energies in the body makes it sensitive to accepting sattvi

frequencies. This later awakens the 'Atma shakti' (I.e. Soul energy of an embodied soul). And later, Bhav isawakened. This enables the body to accept in large measures the Chaitanya emitted by the Deity.

    E. Touch the thumbs to the mid-brow region. (Please see images above..) This posture awakens the Bhav

of surrender in an embodied soul, and in turn activates the appropriate subtle frequencies of Deities fromthe Universe. They enter through the Adnya chakra (Sixth of the 7 chakras in the Kundalini) of the

embodied soul and settle in the space parallel to it at the back interior of the head. In this space theopenings to all the three channels converge; namely, the Moon, the Central and the Sun channels. Due to

the movement of these subtler frequencies in this space, the Central Channel is activated. Consequently itfacilitates the speedy transmission of these frequencies throughout the body, leading to purification of both

the gross and subtle bodies at the same time.F. After doing Namaskar, to completely imbibe the Chaitanya of the Deity (that has entered the hands by

now), instead of bringing the folded hands down immediately, place them on the mid-chest region in such

way that the wrists touch the chest.

The 'Anahat chakra' is located at the centre of the chest. Akin to the Adnya chakra, the activity of the

Anahat chakra is also to absorb the Sattva frequencies. By touching the wrists to the chest, the Anahatchakra is activated and it helps in absorbing more of the Sattva component.

Effect of this PostureBy doing Namaskar in this manner, the Deity's Chaitanya is absorbed to a greater extent by the body, as

compared to other methods of doing Namaskar. This gives maximum distress to negative energies. Thenegative energies that have manifested in a person are unable to touch their thumbs at the mid-brow

region in Namaskar. (The negative energies are subtle. But at times they enter an individual's body andmanifest it. - Editor)'

    Q. What is the reason for not wrapping a cloth around the neck while performing circumambulation, doingNamaskar, ritualistic worship, sacrificial fires, chanting and while visiting Guru and deities?

    A. When a cloth is wrapped around the neck, it does not activate the Vishuddha chakra (in the throatregion) and hence an individual gets less benefit of the Sattva component.

Why should one always do Namaskar to elders?

Meaning: When an elderly person arrives, the vital energy of the young person starts rising and when hegets up and does Namaskar, it returns to normal. - Manusmruti 2.120; Mahabharat, Udhyog, Chapter

    (Section) 38.1, Sr. no. 104, 64-65

Explanation: 'As the sojourn of the elderly person is gradually towards the southern direction, that is,towards the region of Lord Yama (towards death), his body starts emitting raja and tama frequencies on a

high scale. When such an elderly person comes in the vicinity of any younger individual, these frequenciesstart affecting the younger person. A subtle magnetic field is created between the two. Consequently, the

vital energy of the younger person is pulled upward. This way the younger person can suffer due to suddenmomentum to his vital energy. When this younger person doesNamaskar to the elderly person, some

amount of the Central channel of his Kundalini system is activated and the Sattva component in it startsincreasing. Consequently the raja and tama components in him are influenced by the Sattva component

and the vital energy comes back to normal state. Hence on arrival of an elderly person, it is customary forthe younger individuals to do Namaskar to them.'

    Doing Namaskar to Elders..

When travelling, prior to the commencement of a journey and upon returning, why should one do Namaskato elders in the family?

'Namaskar to the elders in the family is one way of surrendering to the God principle in them. When an

time, energy of his mind is activated and in turn activates the five vital energies, which are located at theseat of the Manipur chakra (situated in the Naval region). Transmission of these five vital energies all over

the body then awakens the soul energy. With the strength of the soul energy, the Central channel getsactivated and converts the expressed energy of spiritual emotion to the unexpressed energy of spiritual

emotion. With the help of this unexpressed energy of spiritual emotion, the embodied soul, through themedium of elders, gains the required Deity's principle from the Universe. For this purpose, while leaving the

house on aJourney, the embodied soul should do Namaskar to elders and with the strength of Sattva frequencies has

to protect himself from distressing frequencies in the atmosphere. Similarly, returning from a journey, one

should immediately do Namaskar to elders and awaken the God principle in them, which would disintegratethe raja-tama particles from the air around him, which might have been brought along. What is the correct method of doing Namaskar to Saints?

    1. The portion of head, which should be placed at the feet :We can imbibe maximum Chaitanya through the Brahmarandhra (the seventh chakra of the Kundalini

system located in the crown of our head). Since it (Brahmarandhra) cannot be placed at a Saints's feet, thepart of head beginning above the forehead is to be placed at the feet of Saints. Due to this, maximum

Chaitanya emanating from Their feet can enter into the one doing Namaskar.

2.. The exact spot to place one's head on a Saint's feet:The big toes of Saints emit maximum Chaitanya; hence we should place our head on the big toe, than on

their foot. If we are in a position to touch both the toes, then place the head on the right big toe.

    3. The position of hands when placing the head on a Saint's feet:

    A. Some interlock their hands behind their backs at the waist and do Namaskar. If we are in a position totouch both their toes, then we should place the hands one on each foot and the head should be placed onthe big toe of the right foot. If we are in a position to touch one of Their toes, then place both the hands on

it and keep the head on the big toe.B. Some do Namaskar by placing hands on the ground. This is also wrong because if the hands are placed

on the ground then the Chaitanya emanating from the Saint's feet are absorbed by one and then returns tothe earth through the hands of the one doing Namaskar. Thus the person does not benefit from it.

    C. Some cross their hands and place them on the feet of Saints, that is, their right hand on the right foot othe Saint and their left hand on the left foot of the Saint while doingNamaskar. This is a crude imitation of

the manner in which Christians place their crossed hands on their chest.. Instead, our right hand should beplaced on the left foot of the Saint and our left hand on the right foot of the Saint. This is convenient also.

However, if a Guru has started some procedure in a particular sect, then the hands are to be placed in thatmanner only.

    D. The hands are to be positioned in such a way that the palms are placed on the feet..How to do Namaskar to the wooden footwear (paduka) of Saints?

Namaskar to the wooden footwear (paduka) of Saints

'The left paduka symbolises Lord Shiva and the right symbolises Divine Energy. The left paduka is theunmanifest saviour energy and the right is the unmanifest destroyer energy of the Supreme God. The

saviour or destroyer energy of the Supreme God emanates from the 'pegs' of the paduka as per the need. When we do Namaskar by placing our head on the 'pegs' of the paduka, some may experience distress due

to the inability to tolerate the manifest energy emitting from it. Hence, while doing Namaskar to thepaduka, instead of the pegs, place the head on the foremost part i.e. The place where the Saints place thei

toes.'Should one do Namaskar to a dead body?

    Q. If this be so, should we do Namaskar to the dead bodies in Kaliyuga only as a custom? If it is a custom, can we discontinue it?

    A. One can maintain respect for the dead person by doing Namaskar and in addition set an ideal withregards to respecting elders. In Kaliyuga, from this one will benefit at an emotional level and not at a

spiritual level. However, one should not discontinue this custom; instead one could learn how to get spirituabenefit from it. Due to the deterioration of the Sattva component in embodied souls, this practice has

become a mere custom in Kaliyuga.

However, as per the saying, 'God exists where there is spiritual emotion', while doing Namaskar to a dead

body if we have a spiritual emotion that we are doing Namaskar to the God principle in it, then the Godprinciple in the dead body awakens and we receive God's blessings. This happens because the God principle

is immortal and has no limitations that a physical body has.

    Q. It is said that one should not do Namaskar to a sleeping person. In Kaliyuga if one does Namaskar bytouching the dead body, then are the chances of getting distress from negative energies not higher?

    A. Yes it is; but while doing Namaskar it is important that the action be performed with correct spiritualemotion. Since Namaskar is done to the God principle in the dead body instead of activating raja, tama

components, it activates the Godly principle in the dead body and bestows Sattva corresponding to thedegree of spiritual emotion.'

'One hand' touch to the Temple StepsAction: Touch step with fingers of right hand & move same hand over head.

Science: 'The area around the temple is charged with frequencies of Deities which leads to an increase in

the Sattva component. The presence of Divine consciousness in the area charges even the stairs in a

temple. 'Climbing' steps is one of the activities, which increases the raja component in the body. Hence, theraja component is already activated in the body of an embodied soul so by touching the steps with thefingers of the right hand, the Sattva component and peace from the charged premise, get transmitted to

the body through the right hand. In addition, from this action, the activated raja component in the body cabe controlled through the medium of the surya nadi (Sun channel). This means that, for a moment, the

activities of the Sun channel can be stopped. From this process, the embodied soul learns to enhance theSattva component through raja dominant actions. Therefore, it is very essential to perform the appropriate

sattvik actions at each corresponding level, hence the method of touching the steps with fingers of the righ

hand and then moving the fingers or palm over the head. Even the dust present on the steps is chargedwith Chaitanya and so we must respect it and derive spiritual benefit from it.. If the embodied soul harbour

the spiritual emotion that 'the Chaitanya from the steps be transmitted all over my body from the dust on

my hand', then it will give increasing benefit to the embodied soul. In addition if the ego of the embodied

soul is less at that time then it gives even more benefit. When any action is performed devoid of ego or'I'ness it is treated as a 'non-action' (akarma-karma) .'

Do's and Dont's while doing NamaskarQ. Why should the eyes be closed while doing Namaskar?

'Joining hands while bowing the head amounts to saluting God or the divinity in the person in front. Theeyes are closed while doing Namaskar to God or any respected person, to enable one to have the vision of

God within us.'Q. Why should the footwear be taken off while doing Namaskar?

While sitting, partaking meals, sleeping, wishing and doing Namaskar to Gurus and other elderly people, footwear should not be worn. - Gautamsmruti 9.

    1. Footwear increases the raja-tama components in a person.

    2. Paying obeisance (Namaskar) with high raja-tama components will not help in activating the Kundalini

(centre in the spiritual energy system).

    3. The ability to absorb the sattva component too is reduced, due to an increase in the raja-tamacomponents, leading to little benefit from a Namaskar.

    4. Doing Namaskar to a Deity, with footwear on, may also invite the wrath of the Deity.

    Q. Why is it not advisable to hold any object while doing Namaskar?1. While doing Namaskar if an object is held in the hands, usually the fingers and their tips are in a curled

position and not straight. As a result, the sattva component received is unable to enter the tips of the

    fingers.

2.. The sattva component emitted towards the seeker, strikes the object held and bounces back. Also, at

times, instead of the person absorbing the sattva component, the object may absorb it.

    3. If the object in the hand is raja or tama predominant, and if it is touched to the forehead or chest whiledoing Namaskar, then the raja-tama components from it mayenter the body of the one who is doing

Namaskar.Q. While doing Namaskar, why are men not supposed to cover their head, whereas women are

advised to cover their head? One should not do Namaskar with footwear on, covering the head or holding any objects. (But women

should cover their head with their saris and only then do Namaskar) - Apastamb Dharmasutra1.4.14.19

leads to the absorption of the Sattva component in greater proportion in the body. Sometimes due to theactivation of the Kundalini, Sattva component starts entering the body through the head. But at times the

distressing energies try to take advantage of this and mix black energy with the Sattva component. Thepotential to activate the Kundalini is higher in men as compared to women. Hence they are hardly affected

by this negative energy. Contrary to this, as women are more vulnerable, they get affected by distressingenergies to a greater extent and thus they can experience distress. That is why, when doing Namaskar,

women are advised to cover their head with the ends of their sari. This creates a barrier between the headand the distressing energies and prevents themfrom penetrating the body of the woman. However, to some

extent this also blocksbenevolent frequencies from entering the women. (Benevolent frequencies are subtler than negative

frequencies; hence they enter a woman to some extent even though the sari covers her head.) However,

the proper posture of Namaskar gives maximum Sattva component to an individual and hence women tooget required benefits. This shows how God takes care of every devotee. Doing Namaskar without theserestrictions is equally effective if the devotee does it with spiritual emotion.

    37. Practise your Svadhanna, your Varnashrama Dharma unselfishly, without egoism. You will attain purificationof heart. Knowledge of Brahman will dawn in your heart.

Japa Yoga1. In this Iron Age, Japa Yoga is an easy way for attaining God-realisation.2. Japa is the repetition of any Mantra or Name of the Lord with Bhava and feeling.3. Japa removes the impurities of the mind, destroys sins and brings the devotee face to face with the Lord.4. Every Name is filled with countless powers; just as fire has the natural property of burning things, so also the

Name of God has the power of burning the sins and desires.

    5. Sweeter than all sweet things, more auspicious than all good things, purer than all pure things, is the Name of theLord.6. Name of the Lord is a boat to cross this Samsara. It is a weapon to destroy the mind.7. The repetition of the Mantra again and again generates great spiritual force and momentum and intensifies the

spiritual Samskaras or impressions.8. Mananaat Trayate iti Mantrah:By theManana, constant thinking or recollection, one is released from the round of

birth and death; so it is called Mantra.9. Repetition of Mantra raises vibrations. Vibrations give rise to definite forms. Repetition of Om Namah Sivaya gives

rise to the form of Lord Siva in the mind; repetition of Om Namo Narayanaya gives rise to the form of Lord Hari.10.The glory of the Name of God cannot be established through reasoning and intellect. It can certainly be

experienced or realised, only through devotion, faith and constant repetition.11.Japa is of three kinds, viz., Manasic Japa, Upamsu Japa or humming, and Vaikhari Japa, loud and audible Japa.12.Mental repetition of Japa, Manasic Japa, is more powerful than loud Japa.13.Get up at 4 a.m. and do the Japa for two hours. Brahmamuhurtha is most favourable for Japa and meditation.

14.If you cannot take a bath, wash your hands, feet, face and body, and sit for Japa.15.Face north or east when sitting. This enhances the efficacy of the Japa.16.Sit on a Kusha-grass seat or deer-skin or rug. Spread a white cloth over it. This conserves body-electricity.17.Do some prayer before starting the Japa.18.Have a steady pose. Have Asana-Jaya or conquest over Asana. You must be able to sit in Padma, Siddha or

Sukha Asana for three hours at a stretch.19.When you repeat the Mantra, have the feeling or mental attitude that the Lord is seated in your heart, that Sattva

or purity is flowing from the Lord to your mind, that the Mantra purifies your heart, destroys desires and cravingsand evil thoughts.

20.Do not do the Japa in a hurried manner, just as a contractor tries to finish his work in a hurried way. Do it slowlywith Bhava, one-pointedness of mind and single-minded devotion.

21.Pronounce the Mantra distinctly and without mistakes. Do not repeat it too fast or too slow.22.Use not the index finger while rolling the beads. Use the thumb, the middle and the ring fingers. When counting of

one Mala is over, revert it and come back again. Cross not the Meru. Cover your hand with a towel.23.Be vigilant. Keep an alert attention during Japa. Stand up and do the Japa when sleep tries to overpower you.24.Resolve to finish a certain minimum number of Malas before leaving the seat.25.Mala or rosary is a whip to goad the mind towards God.26.Sometimes do the Japa without a Mala. Go by the watch.27.Practise meditation also along with Japa. This is Japa-Sahita-Dhyana. Gradually Japa will drop and meditation

alone will continue. This is Japa-Rahita-Dhyana.28.Have four sittings for Japa dailyearly morning, noon, evening and night.29.A devotee of Lord Vishnu should repeat Om Namo Narayanaya; a devotee of Lord Siva, Om Namah Sivaya; a

devotee of Lord Krishna, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya; a devotee of Lord Rama, Om Sri Ramaya Namahor Om Sri Ram Jaya Ram Jaya Jaya Ram; a devotee of Devi, Gayatri Mantra or Durga Mantra.

30.It is better to stick to one Mantra alone. See Lord Krishna in Rama, Siva, Durga, Gayatri.31.Regularity in Japa Sadhana is most essential. Sit in the same place and at the same time.

32.Purascharana is repetition of the Mantra Akshara-Laksha, one lakh of times for each letter.33.Japa must become habitual. Even in dream you must be doing Japa.34.Japa Yoga is the easiest, quickest, safest, surest, and cheapest, way for attaining God-realisation. Glory to the

Lord! Glory, glory to His Name!35.O man! Take refuge in the Name.Nama(Name) andNami(Lord) are inseparable.

BHAGAVAN SHRI SATHYA SAI BABAS DISCOURSES

A respectful compilation from the series of postingsby Dr. BGY Sastry([email protected] )

    14 - A professional pickpocket

One day goddess Parvathi asked Shiva: "Lord! I have heard that there is a sacred shrine for your worship by name Kasi and that

those who visit Kasi and offer worship to you after a holy bath in the Ganges will earn the merit of coming to Kailas and stay ther

ever. Is it true?" Lord Shiva replied: "All the people cannot earn that merit. Mere visiting Kasi and offering worship to my image

not enough. Presently, I shall make the point clear to you. Let us go to Kasi as an aged couple. I shall make you enact a drama!"

Lord Shiva and Parvathi appeared before the entrance of the temple of Shiva, Parvathi as an old hag of eighty years and Lord Shirickety old man of ninety. Shiva laid his head on the lap of Parvathi and started groaning in severe pains. The old woman was cryi

helplessly. She begged every pilgrim saying: "Oh ye devotees! Look here, this is my husband. He is terribly thirsty and may die an

moment. Will you please fetch some water for him to drink? I cannot leave him alone and go to fetch water". The pilgrims were

coming from the ghats after their ceremonial bath in the Ganges. Their clothes were wet and they were carrying water in small bri

vessels. They saw and heard the woman's lament. Some said: "Wait, we shall attend to your husband after offering the sacred Gan

    water to Lord Viswanath."

Some said: "Oh what a nuisance! Why can't these beggars allow us at least to offer worship in peace." Some others said: "These

beggars should not be allowed to sit here".

There was a big crowd near the temple entrance. A professional pickpocket walked along with some of these pilgrims. He also hear

the old woman's lament. He could not bear the sight of the suffering old man and the bewailing old woman. He walked up to them

said: "Mother, what do you want? Who are you? Why are you here? The old woman replied, "Son, we came here to have the dar

of Lord Visweswara. My husband suddenly took ill and fainted out of exhaustion. He might survive if someone were to pour somewater into his parching mouth. His condition is too critical for me to leave him and go to bring water. I requested many people to h

me, but nobody would spare any water though they have been carrying pitchers full of it." The thief was moved to compassion. He

brought some water in the dried gourd-pot. The woman stopped him and said: "Son, my husband may die any moment, he will no

accept water unless the person who gives water speaks truth." The pickpocket could not catch the meaning. He said: "Mother, ple

tell me what I should do"? With a cynical laughter, he said: "Mother, I have not done any good deed so far. I am a professional

pickpocket. The only good deed is that which I am going to do now, to offer water to this dying old man. This is true." He poured

gently some water into the mouth of the old man. No sooner had the pickpocket done this deed than the old couple disappeared an

their place stood Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, in their entire full splendor. Shiva said: "Son, you are indeed blessed. There is

greater morality than speaking the truth, and no true worship more faithful than service to fellow human beings. You have been

atoned for all the sins you have committed so far because of this one good deed.

Hundreds of devout families are now eagerly looking forward to His Darshanam as often as possible, several time

week. Families of neighboring Cities have started making plans for their family trips to Houston, just to visit the

newly opened temple. One of the devotees I met at the beautifully manicured lawn said It is as if the roses, tulasi

thechi and jasmine are silently waiting to reach Bhagavans sannidhi. Sri Guruvayurappan just gave back thegenuine happiness ofPrabhatham and Sandhya which He had taken away from me for more than four decades of

US-vaasam. Breaking my fast with a spoon-ful malar prasadam I receive from Sri Narayanan Nambuthiri tastes

many fold better than my favorite bagels or kolache. The sound of Edakka, the smell of karpuram, chandanam andthe burning ney vilakkukin thiri at dusk and bhakthi rasam in the bhajan by the local bhajan group are all bringing

back my child hood memories. As I close my eyes with many of us before the elegantly built Srikovil to listen to t

rhythmic line ..Chelanga ketti odi odi vayo .. ente thamara kanna.., He appears before us - the Sahashra SheershPurusha or Papanasham SivansEerezhu bhuvanagal padaithavan ! We have a place now to do pradakshinam wh

all that we hear is the idyllic Om namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya. Sri Chekur Unnikrishnan Nambuthiri religiously

ensures that daily puja is conducted in accordance with the guidance from Thanthri Brahmasri Kariannur DivakaraNambuthiri.

Balalaya Prathishta of Sri Guruvayurappan Temple was a very important event at Texas during May 21to 23, 20

Both for the religious Hindu commoners and for the connoisseurs of Indian fine arts, 11620 Ormandy StrHouston, TX 77035 turned into the most attractive address during the weekend. Under the direction of the thant

prathishta karmam of the utsavamurthies of Sri Guruvayurappan, and upadevathas Sri Ganesha, Sri Ayyappan

Bhagavathi were all conducted in a serene ambiance in front a crowd that exceeded two thousand.

The elegant decor, chenda melam, processions, classical dances and music, bhajans, veda parayanam, discourses

Narayaneeyam and sumptuous meals were all capable of attracting many visitors. The concept of Thulabharam

Nirapara vekkalperhaps, for the first time in this part of the world elicited criousity amongst many visitors. Hind

The new temple will be an added attraction to the attraction to the Hindus in the western world. Carving of the

granite structures has already begun in Kerala, India. The construction is expected to be completed by summer 20Until then, the deities will be worshipped in the current temporary building. It is an exciting fact that the prathishta
