My VishuKripa Chandran (Republished from a previous issue)

    (D/O Geetha Chandran)

Its a lovely spring morning and the birds are singing merrily.

When I wake up on Vishu morning, the first thing I see is Your Divine face.

With Your playful eyes, chubby cheeks, and adorable smile,

Lord Krishna, I feel blessed and I know I am ready for the year,

    And to overcome all obstacles.

My first experience with Lord Guruvayoorappan

    Jyothi Lakshman

This is my first contribution to Navaneetam magazine this is also one of the first experience

I had with Lord Guruvayoorappan. The moderator may go through my below experience anddo the needful.

One of our cousins, who stays very close to our house, conducts Narayaneeyam classesregularly in her house. Unfortunately, I have not been able to attend the classes as it takesplace during my working days & hours. This group also keeps having the "NarayaneeyamParayanam" very regularly in each others houses.Again, I have not attended as it takes placeduring the working days.

On one such occasion, one morning my cousin called me to inform me about the Parayanamin their house. As this was conducted on a Wednesday morning, I felt bad as I would not beable to attend. I silently prayed toGuruyavoorappan asking him to make it possible for me to attend it sometime, and left to theoffice with a heavy heart.

Little did I realize that Lord Krishna was already waiting for me at the office that morning !When I reached the office, one of my colleagues handed over to me the Sugar & Butter fromGuruvayoor !! I felt it was Krishna's way of telling me "Don't worry, I am with you always !" Ijust kept starting at the prasadam for a long time before consuming it. The same evening, Ishared this prasadam with my cousin who was conducting the Parayanam she was verythrilled and excited to receive Bhagawan's prasadam on the same day of her Parayanam.

    Sri Gurupavanapura Divya Alaya Darsanam.

    Shri. Nadukaveri Viswanathan

(Continued from last issue of Navaneetham.)

Part 3 Ch 1 Darsanam of Sri GanapathiAfter having the darsan of Sri Guruvayurappan, the devotee reluctantly moves on,

clockwise and then feasts his eyes with a Darsan of Sri Ganapathi. Normally, there is a

Sanndhi for Sri Ganapathi in all major temples at the start itself. At Guruvayur, Sri

Ganapathi is worshipped inside the main temple, after worshipping Sri

Guruvayurappan. As if to remove the lacuna, a small temple of Sri Ganapathi has

been built up on the South Eastern side, behind the Meppathur Auditorium, recently

    (already dealt with).

The devotee worships and prays to Sri Ganapathi (inside the temple also) and performs Dhorbhikaranam (catches both his ears with his hands and sits and stands up, alternatively, at least three timeand requests Him to pardon him for all his sins committed, knowingly or unknowingly and to grant him ahis desires. Sri Ganapathi too, so merciful He is, forgives him and grants all his desires. What Heexpects is simple Dhorbhi Karanam. If any one ignores Him, he gets into unexpected and seriousdifficulties and obstacles. But all these vanish, once the devotee repents and performs DhorbhiKaranam. That is why He is described as Sri Vigneswara or Sri Vinayaka. Incidentally, Dhorbhi-karanamis good for physical and mentally health also. Some ardent devotees of Sri Ganesa recite the various hymns including Sri Adi Sankaras Sri GanesaPancha Ratnam and Bhagawan Deva Rishi Naradas Sankata Nasana Ganesa Sthothram etc., After

worshipping Him, from the heart of hearts, the devotee moves on, to the inner Prakaram and observesthe images sculptured on the stone pillars, one by one.

Part 3 Ch. 2: Devotee observes the image on the first pillar:

Sri Lakshmi Narayana seated on Sri Adi Sesha in the Milky Ocean and Brahmadeva sitting on thLotus coming out of the navel of Sriman Narayana!

After Sri Ganesh Darsan, the devotee then moves left (clockwise) inside the Inner Prakaram. On the firsleft pillar facing North, he finds a beautiful picture of Sriman Narayana and Lakshmi Devi, both seated oAdi Sesha in the Milky Ocean and Sri Brahma Deva seated on a Lotus flower, whose stem emanates

from the navel of Sriman Narayana (Padma Nabha). On seeing this beautiful image, the devotee starts surfing on thought waves: The holy Moorthi of SriGuruvayurappan was originally worshipped by Sriman Narayana Himself at His Abode Sri Vaikuntamand subsesquently passed on toBrahma Deva ,when the latter prayed to Him for help at the time of Creation; Brahma Deva alsoworshipped the Moorthi for some time at the early stages of Creation. He then passed It on to RajaSuthapas; After Raja Suthapas, the Moorthi was worshipped by Rishi Kashyapa and his wife Adithi Devduring Sri Vamana Avatharam at Siddhasramam. All this happened inKritha Yuga or Satya Yuga; In Dwapara Yuga, It reached Sri Krishna at Dwaraka thru Dhowmya Rishiand wasworshipped by Him at Dwaraka; and In Kali Yuga, the holy Moorthi traveled all the way from Dwaraka to

BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM(Continuation from the March 2011 issue of Navaneetham)

    (Collected by M P R Nair)

[BHAGAVATHA DHARMAM is a Book written in Malayalam, based on Srimad Bhagavatham, by Sadguru Sreemad Abhedananda

Maharaj of Abhedashramam, Trivandrum, Kerala. Sampoojya Swamiji attained Maha Samadhi and left his mortal coil on 29th Octob

1983. The Book, Bhagavatha Dharmam contains 1060 Soothras (Axioms) which bring out the essence of Srimad Bhagavatham. Th

Book has been translated into English by Shri: P. N. Balakrishnan Nair, (formerly Senior Deputy Accountant General, Kerala), a devot

disciple of Swamiji Maharaj. It is being serially published in our Magazine from September 2010 onwards. This part covers Axioms fro

536 to 722, covering so far 8 Skandhas.

P.N.B has informed me that it is proposed to print it as a donation to Abhedashramam, the rightful owner of the book, and that if there a

interested readers, who want the Book, they can also join the venture by sponsoring a few copies each.]

    VII Seventh and eighthSkandhas

    536. To think and say that I have no ego is also an expression of ego.

    537. Man becomes unhappy because of his ego.

    538. A man who preaches spiritual knowledge to others and acts in a manner contrary to his own preaching, is a devil.

    539. Devotion cannot be experienced without spiritual knowledge and detachment.

    540. Greedy can be influenced by money, and the egoist by flattery.

    721. If you install an image of God in your house, GoddessLakshmi will come into your house uninvited. So better worship God, rather

    than running afterLakshmi (wealth.)

    722. When Gods blessings are showered on anyone, all his riches will at first be taken away, because it is wealth and riches that make

man egotist. Wealth also disgraces God as well as the whole world.

    The school of sankhya

    Dr. Saroja Ramanujam, M.A.,Ph.D

In sankhya system of philosophy according to which there are two Reals, Prakrthi, theinsentient matter and Purusha, the sentient soul. The whole gross universe is thecombination of these. Prakrthi is basically made up of three gunas, sattva, rajas and thamasand everything else is the modifications of the three gunas. These aspects of prakrthi isdescribed in detail in the karikas that follow.

Moola prakrthi is the primordial nature in which the three gunas are in equilibrium. Theystart combining and first mahat or buddhi thathva evolves out of prakrthi. From mahat theahankra is evolved. This is three fold according to the three gunas and from satvik ahankarathe senseorgans, organs of creation and mind are evolved and from thamasik ahankara the

five thanmatras, the subtle elements in the form of sound, touch, colour, taste and smell areevolved from which the gross elements space, air, fire, water and earth are evolved. Therajasik ahankara acts only as a catalyst for the activity. Then the whole gross universe comesinto existence. Since mind and intellect, buddhi are also the products of the gunas, even thefeelings and thoughts belong to the insentient prakrthi.

Purusha is the individual self who is actionless and hence neither an evolvent nor an evolutePrakrthi starts creating by the mere presence of purusha who , due to the lack of knowledge the real nature of prakrthi, identifies himself with it and gets bound. When he acquires thereal knowledge about prakrthi and that he is unattached with it, he becomes free.

Prakrthi is not perceptible because it is unmanifest . it is not non-existent like the horn of thhare. The reason for the non-perception of prkrthi is subtlety, because it is beyond senseperception.

In sankhya the cause a s well as the effect , that is the prkrthi and its effects are real unlike iadvaita and Nyaya systems. The tenets of sankhya regarding cause and effect are,

    1. What is non-existent cannot be brought into existence.

This is a refutation of Buddhism according to which everything comes out of nothing becausethey do not believe in any eternal reality. Everything is momentary or only the projection of

the mind. Nothing can come out of nothing. A non-existent entity like the horn of the hare canever come into existence by any means.

In advaita also the effect , the world is unreal and an illusion though they affirm a real andeternal cause that is Brahman. Sankhya refutes this also for the reason given above.

The Nyaya school of philosophy the effect is asath, non-existent in the cause, which is sathbecause for them the effect is newly produced and not the modification of the cause.Thisisalso refuted by sankhya saying that the effect could not be different from the cause in its

essential nature. The sprout comes out of the seed when the seed ceases to exist. But the sprout has only theparts of seed as its cause and not the nonexistence of the seed. In other words the seed itselfbecomes the cause (pariNaama- modification)

The essential characteristics of the cause do remain the same in the effect. A blue flowercomes out of its seed and yellow flower comes out of its seed. The colours are not changed onany account. The expressions a pot exists, and a pot ceases to exist refer only to the twostates of the pot.

There is no example of any effect coming into being from a non-existent cause.

2.Every effect must have a cause .There is a definite connection between the cause and the effect, because ,

    3. All effects are not produced from all causes. If anything can come out of anything, one whowishes to make a cloth can get hold of clay and one who wants pot can take the yarn. Thispoint leads to the next reason, namely,

    4. A cause can produce only something which it has the power to produce. Hence a non-existent cause and a non-existent effect are both dismissed.

    5. Since every effect has a cause , it has the same qualities of the cause. Pot has got thequalities of the clay and not cloth while the cloth has the same qualities of that of the yarnwith which it is made.

The unmanifest prkrthi is causeless as it is eternal according to sankhya like the purusha, the individual soul, it is actionless in the causal state and the gunas start combining due tothe proximity of purusha. It is one and partless, being all pervading, does not depend onanything else for its existence and hence not subsidiary to anything and it is not a sign fromwhich its cause could be inferred being causeless and unmanifest.

    Ohm Namo Bhagavathe Vasudevaya

    The 24 Gurus referred in

    Srimad BhagavatHam.

    M.P.R.Nair.

    Ohm Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.

The present day life calls upon us to have an unusual degree of courage, awareness, growth, happiness, anprosperity. But, it is not an easy joke. Loads of difficulties are increasing day by day in our life, in spite of all o

efforts. Life has series of problems, some of them are very difficult to solve. It may not be so easy to get a righ

Spiritual Master for all to show the right path, either. Here comes Srimad Bhagavatham to help us to a great extenamidst many other things, with the story of 24 Gurus from the open nature, whom we can keenly observe and lear

from them many helpful hints to solve many of our problems. The process of solving problems may perhaps b

augmented if we keep up some of the basic requirements such as our unconditional love towards God with thultimate aim of attaining Brahma Gignasa through Dharma Gignasa, and then selecting the righteous path

Pravarthy Marga, through the proper Nivarthy Marga. Dharma Gignasa involves righteous living and Brahm

Gignasa enables us towards achieving Self-Realization. Nivarthy Margas are like taking wise decisions afteSravanam, Keerthanam, Mananam, Nitidhyasam and Dhyanam etc., and Pravarthy Marga is in executing things

the most systematic, righteous and perfect way, without prejudice to anyone.

Canto 11in Srimad Bhagavatham teaches us about whatever we want in our lives. One of the reasons for th

eleventh Canto to be known as the crown of Bhagavatam, is because it contains innumerable discourses an

Upakhyanas, with simple illustrations as to how we could live a fearless life. Swami Vallabacharya beautifull

expounds the uniqueness of this Canto since it talks about liberation to both the Lord and the common people ojivas. The Lord became Srimad Bhagavatham to play in the hands of normal mortals like us, and in due cours

liberate the jivas. This canto deals with Bhagavatha Dharma for a common man. It is Sage Shuka elaborating o

    Bhagavata Dharma.

Amidst them comes the beautiful story of 24 Gurus. It is in Chapters 7, 8 and 9 in Canto11. (Nearly 10

Slokas). The scene is just before Swargarohana of Lord Krishna. Udhavas all efforts to retain Lord Krishna here Bhooloka, during Kali Yuga, failed miserably. He was also in utter disappointment when he heard from Krishn

that he was not taking him to Vaikuntam, either. He appeared for one moment as ignorant of the fact that Krishna

always there and that Bhagavan has just finished only His duties of one of His many Avatars. We know the truth

aswell as Udhava, that there is nothing as wonderful and sweet as Krishna's name in this whole world. Udhava istypical example of a common man though he is Krishnas cousin and a Sishya of Great Brhaspati. So man

instances are there in Srimad Bhagavatham, wherein he puts doubts regarding so many silly things to Krishna.

think Vyasa Bhagavan intends him as a representative of us. Every time you can see Krishna patiently describing him the situation and clearing his doubt as if to a very close and intimate friend. If we closely watch, we can se

that every time he is asking Krishna for a short cut also, as some of us do to our elders. However, finally Krishn

advised Udhava to do Sarvasangaparithyaga through Sannyasa. Spontaneously, as usual, he told Krishna, th

he was ignorant and that he was always indulged in thinking about his body, created by Krishnas Yogamaya, an

all things related to the body such as his relations and his possessions. He added that his consciousness was mergewith his body. So, he asked Krishna to kindly teach him the easiest method by which he could attain th

Sarvasangaparithyaga through Sannyasa as He advised.

    Bhagavan told him:

Those who do Tatwa Vichara to find out truth, by self and deep deliberations, gradually and eventually li

or raise his atma by his atma itself, from external sensory pleasures or mere worldly pleasures. Bhagavan exhorte

him to liberate his soul from worldly pleasures or mere sensual pleasures.Gita puts this more nicely, like:

Udharedatmanaatmanam, natmanamava sadhayel,Atmaiva hyatmano bandhu , ratmaiva ripuratmana, (Gita 6-5)

Let one raise the self by the self, and not let the self go down, for the self is the friend of the self and the self is th

    foe of the self.

    Bhagavatham continues,

Guru of atma is atma itself, especially for man, he is his Guru, because by seeing, by observing and b

inference, he clears his doubts and attains prosperity gradually. Those bold and brave ones, specialized in Samkhyand Yoga, recognize and distinguish, the omnipotent atma or soul, distinctly. Somany bodies are created here, wi

one to many legs and without legs, of which I like best, the body of man. Here Bhagavan makes the reference othe conversation, regarding 24 Gurus, between the Maha Tejaswi Dattathreya, Paramgnani Avadhootha , a wishandsome and brilliant young Brahmin, wandering fearlessly, throughout the length and breadth of the world an

the Dharma Tatwa Gnani King Yadu, son of Yayati, the forerunner of Krishna.

When asked where did he get the extra ordinary intelligence and power , though he is wandering like a mad boand doing nothing, the Brahmin said to Yadu, that he had many Gurus accepted by his own intelligence and the

made him such a jeevanmuktha. He began to narrate the details of those Gurus and the lessons he learned fro

    each of them.

The details of the 24 Gurus (Spiritual Masters) and the lessons learned from them as told by the Paramgna

Brahmin to King Yadu can be summarized as follows:

The Earth: (We feel smell because of the Earth; there is no smell, if there is no Earth)

From the earth I learned a sober person should never be distracted from progress on his own path even if h

is harassed by other living beings, because they are acting helplessly under the control of God. He should considit as his fate. He should be as steady as the earth. The earth teaches us sahana shakthi, (power of endurance). S

the earth is called sarvam saha: We should pardon others as Earth pardons. This is why it is called Bhoomimat

the mother earth. We have to learn ultimate Kshama (patience) from Bhoomi. Like the mountain and the tree, hshould dedicate himself to the service of others. We learn lessons by observing the way material nature, with i

    living and non-living components, functions.

2.The Air: ( We feel the sense of touch or sparsha, because of the Air )

Pranavayu sustains our gnana, mind and words and so we must eat only that much required to sustain oupranavayu. A yogi or a transcendentalist may be surrounded by innumerable material objects possessing good an

bad qualities. But like the wind he should never be entangled by them. When the wind carries different aromas, never mixes with them. It is functioning only as a career and it is independent.

3.The Sky :(We hear because of the sky; if there is no sky, we will never hear any sound) Though the sky extends everywhere and everything rests within it, it does not mix with anything. The so

and Supersoul have the same quality. The sky is never implicated or affected by the blowing action of the wind. I

the same way the living entity or the Brahman in a Muni, is wide spread, indivisible, is never affected like the skythough it may enter a body of material elements. Like the sky is not affected by clouds and wind, the atma or th

soul, is not affected by the body, made of the Panchabhoothas or the five elements like Prithuvi, Ap (water), Teja

    (fire) Vayu and the Sky.

4.The Water: (We feel taste or Rasam, because of water) It is a fact that one cannot live without Air and Water. 75

of the Earth is covered by water. Living being contains 70% of water. Since we cannot live without water, water

also known by the name Jeevanm. The saintly person is like water , the most powerful detergent or cleaning liquid in the world, because he

free from all contamination, gentle by nature and when speaking creates a beautiful vibration like the flowing o

water. By seeing, touching or hearing such a saintly person, the living entity is cleansed as if coming in conta

    with pure Ganga water

5.The Fire: (It is said that we feel the shape or form of things because of the presence of Fire.)

Even if a saintly person eats contaminated food by chance he is not affected, like the fire that burns ucontaminated substances that are offered to it. Like fire, he is sometimes concealed and sometimes revealed. As th

spiritual master, he burns up the past and future reactions of his disciples. The Supreme Soul is like fire in that H

enters different bodies as fire manifests differently in various pieces of wood. Like the flickering fire, the waves time flow constantly and imperceptibly bring with them birth, growth and death. But just as nobody can follow th

changing pattern of a flame, no one can see the changes wrought by time upon them.

The Atma, with the help of maya created by itself, enters into different forms likedevas and animals, and as if fire enters into different types of wood, it appears to simulate their dharmas.

    6. The Moon:

Though the Moon waxes and wanes, it is not affected by this change. Similarly the living entity or atmis not affected by the invincible changes of the body brought to it from the time of birth to the time of death.

7.The Sun:A saintly person can accept a material thing with his senses and at the appropriate time he gives that thing to th

proper person. So also the Sun evaporates water and returns it to earth as rain. Sun and saint are never entangled b

this. A yogi accepting the sense objects renounces them at the right time. The sun is reflected in many objects but never divided. Also the soul is reflected into various bodies but is always one and the same.

8.The Pigeon:A certain pigeon once in the forest built its nest in a tree. He dwelt there for some years with a femal

companion and their children. As attached partners in their household they were with their hearts full of affectio

tied together. One day seeing his wife and children captured, by a hunter and thinking that without them life w

not worth living, out of excessive attachment, the madappura chose to be captured by the hunter. This teaches u

that one should never lose oneself in excessive affection or deep and close association with anyone, because onthus indulging will have to suffer great distress. Man is not aware of the rarest human birth, by which one ca

    liberate easily.

    9.The Python:

He does not make arrangements for food, and he will not go in search of food either, but waits for food to comto him. It eats the food, without even looking for the quantity, quality or taste. A sadhaka should eat what he get

sumptuously like this. He must be ready to starve for many days if such a situation comes, considering it as h

prarabdha karma phala. People say that once the python takes its food, it can remain without food for six monthThis exemplifies peacefulness and patience

    10. The Sea:

Just like a tranquil sea, the saintly person, being full of knowledge, is never disturbed. He should be happ

and pleasing in his external behavior. Internally he should be most grave and thoughtful, because his knowledge

immeasurable and unlimited. In all respects he is like the tranquil waters of the unfathomable and unsurpassabocean. The sea has no change when rivers or streams come and join it. Similarly a saintly person should be cal

and quiet, in pleasures and pain. Always Shantham.

    11 . The Moth:

A silly man is captivated by a womans charm, gold, jewels etc., just like a moth is captivated by a flam

and burns in it. It ends its life in the flame. A saintly person should realize that a woman is a Deva maya.

    12. The Honeybee:

A renounced person who begs a little food from different houses is like a madhukari, or honeybee, oBhramaram (vandu). Also a honeybee takes nectar from different flowers, little by little. It is not greedy. S

also an intelligent human being takes the essence of different scriptures. But a saintly person should not becom

greedy and collect too much of anything edible or food for future. In the same way, a saintly person shoucollect wisdom also little by little from various Scriptures. But, at the same time we should not hoard money

excess like the honeybee collects honey in excess, which is totally taken by other people later.

    13. The Elephant:

A saintly person should remember how the great bull elephant is captured by the she-elephant; therefore h

should never desire to touch the body of a young girl(with any bad intentin) even if it is made of wood. We shoulremember the story in Mahabharata, of Rishysringan, Son of Hirani, once happened to be in the track of women.

    14. The Honey-thief:

When honey is stored in excess by the bees in honey combs, honey thieves take away them, killing all th

bees inside. In the same way, when misers hoard money, robbers steal them, sometimes even killing them. A saint

person should never hoard money and go into danger. But, at the same time we must be austere and prudent also.

    15. The Deer:

They are bewildered by the sound of a hunters horn, and thus are caught and killed. A renounced perso

should never become attracted by mundane sounds like sensuous music, especially the sweet singing and dancin

of beautiful women. The deer is so beautiful. Really speaking seeing one such a beautiful deer itself is a mopleasant experience. One, who loves God, should love His creations also, not to speak of such an exquisite

    beautiful deer.

So many things we can observe and study from the poor helpless animals, instead of killing and eatin

them. It is really a horrible hericide.

    16. The Fish:

They are caught on the hook by their uncontrollable tongues. A learned man should control all his senses bfirst controlling the tongue, which is the most powerful sense of all. If you win your tongue, you can succee

    almost everywhere.

    17. Pingala:

Once there was a prostitute lady in the Kingdom of Videha. She gave up her plans for earning money th

bad way, out of frustration. Feeling satisfaction from her abandonment of material desires, she could remembKrishna and became peaceful forever.

    18. The Kurara Bird:

One day a small hawk was holding some meat. A group of large hawks, who were unable to find any pre

attacked the small hawk. At that time, being in danger and out of fear for his life, the little hawk gave up his me

and experienced actual happiness. In the same way, a Bhikshu should not also hesitate to give away, if one desir

what he possesses, if the situation so warrants.

    19. The Child:

A small child is happy due to ignorance, and a saintly person is happy due to having surrendered all t

Krishna, without any attachment to anything.

    20. The Young Girl:Receiving a prospective bridegroom and his party, on a day when her parents were away from home, sh

went into the kitchen to prepare food for them. While beating rice, her bracelets jangled, and she was afraid that thyoung man would think her family was poor because she was doing all the work in the home. She broke all th

bracelets except two on each arm, but these also jangled. She then removed one from each arm, leaving only on

on each arm. Thereafter she worked in silence. All went well. So too, when many people live together, there will bclashing of interests and fighting. It is better to live alone. The Avadhoota studied this fact from that Kanya.

    21. The Arrow-maker:

The devotee should be so absorbed in the Lord that he does not see duality, just as the arrow maker was s

absorbed in his work of making a straight arrow that he did not notice the king passing by.

    22. The Snake:

He makes no home for himself, but takes over the homes of others, having eaten them. A sage shoul

similarly make no endeavors for his own shelter. He should be like a wanderer. You know, whatever you study, homuch you learn from Scriptures or anywhere, it will never be as equivalent to getting knowledge by travelling an

seeing the lives of people , all over the world. It will be the greatest experience in the world, because you are seein

and learning life in flesh and blood.

    23. The Spider: (Oonanabhi)

God is like the spider because He creates the whole network of the cosmos from his own potency, and thewithdraws the whole into Himself. This reminds me a small story. Robert Bruce was a King. He was defeated bhis enemies many times. At last he ran away and hid in a cave. While in the cave, he watched a small spide

repeatedly jumping to tie one end of the web at a point to make its nest. Really it was tired, but collecting all th

remaining strength and power, it jumped again, this time tying the end of the web, at a point. It then made the nework complete. This opened the eyes of Robert Bruce and gathering all his forces he attacked his enemies and wi

the war in the end. The spider was his Guru..

    24. The Wasp:

The wasp trapped a caterpillar in his hive. Inside the hive, out of fear and vairagya, the worm, in course

time took on the mentality of a wasp, and thus became a wasp in the end. This illustrates how one attains, wh

    ones mind is fixed upon.

The Avadhoota said to the Yadu King that from studying the life activities of the various animates an

inanimates as narrated above, I have learned everything about the Self. The nature is an open book, who keen

observes it with providence. Let us not ignore anything in the nature as unimportant. The grass we trea

mercilessly may perhaps contain the plants, Mrtasanjeevani, that can sometimes give back our life. Our culture to see some amsa of divinity in anything and everything.

handled without any application of ointment. Make sure to avoid contact with the nails. Taking bath itself

is an exercise to keep the body clean. While taking bath slight massages on the skull energizes and

vibrate the nerves and keep the head cool. A massage to the ankle, feet and toes make our legs lively

and lovely.Similar to our arms a nation needs army for protection of its own subjects and not for attacking

neighboring country or countries. An army can be called to help citizen in abnormal conditions of natura

calamity for which they are best trained. At the same time if the army is strong no outsiders will consider

of attacking since they know the outcome.

During my younger school days, we used to stand in line to perform drill a sort of body exercises. Each

one stands away at arms length and stretches our arms so that our fingers are inches away from the

person standing next. The drill master then did not say the exact reason for this exercise. Now having

practiced the same I feel healthy too. While stretching my arms I use slight pressure as if the arms are

pulled away from my body, As I raise my arms to the shoulder level, I slowly breath-in and hold mybreath for 5 seconds and slowly breath-out as I bring down the arms. Alternatively, one can raise the

arms and touch both the palms above the head and slowly breathing out. This can be repeated two or

    three times.

Another exercise that I use early morning is to make a lotus flower with the palm and the fingers. First

pose as namastey with the palms together. Slowly breath-in while making the palm similar to the lotus

bud. Then open up the fingers to make it like a lotus flower while keeping the base of the palm together

and the thumps and little fingers together. I keep breathing-in during this process. Hold breath for 3-4

seconds while stretching the fingers to the maximum and also feeling the pressure on the wrist,

elbow and even on the shoulders. This can be repeated two or three times before getting up from the

bed. Those who perform soorya namaskar should also feel the pressure on the shoulder, and elbows

while raising their arms. Thus with our arms and shoulders we can perform exercises to make our body

    healthy.

Health also demands proper healthy food in moderation.

Bhagavath Geetha Chapter 6 Sloka 17 yukthaahara.bhavathi du:khahaa clearly says eat proper

food, do proper exercises, enough sleep. Do not over indulge any that will keep diseases away.

yuktAhAra vihArasya yukta ceshTasya karmasu |yukta svapna avabodhasya yogo bhavati duhkhahA ||

Meaning:The yoga becomes destroyer of sorrows for him who is moderate in eating andin relaxation and in all his actions and in sleep and waking (from Sarojajis e-book)

The type of food that we eat is responsible for making our body healthy. Avoid junk food and maintain

nutritional and balanced diet. The body is considered as kshethram and must be kept clean inside and

outside all the time. Always sit straight (keep the back straight) especially while eating our food. Mind

you, we are not eating food but offering nivedyam to the God within. And also do consider what ever

we are offering is HIS prasadam. A happy and friendly atmosphere is absolutely necessary to enjoy the

meal. Avoid unnecessary talk or arguments while eating. Avoid unhealthy Diet Cola (any Cola for that

matter) and drink only warm water.

Our health is in our hands and not in the hands of Doctors or our Governments, and make the best use

of everything that God has provided in our body and around us.

    Our respectful Condolences

It is sad to hear about the demise of Shri Sathya Sai Baba. He was an inspiration for

many . Such an enlightened soul. His teachings were rooted in the universal ideals of

truth, right conduct, peace, love and non-violence.

    We pray for him.

BHAGAVAN SHRI SATHYA SAI BABAS DISCOURSES

A respectful compilation from the series of postingsby Dr. BGY Sastry

([email protected] )30 - Yes, What you said is true

One day, in the midst of conversation, Lakshmi, the Divine Consort and the Goddess of

Wealth, addressed Naryana, "Lord! The entire world is adoring Me; not even one in a

hundred, why, not even one in a million, is worshipping you." She teased the Lord by this

statement. She put forward a plan to test the sincerity of man. She said, "Lord! It is best to

discover for ourselves how true the facts are. Come, we shall both go forth into the world

    and find out."

Narayana agreed. He changed into a great Pundit, wearing golden bracelets on his wrists as

evidence of the appreciation and admiration of famous academic bodies. He had a garlandof rudraksha beads round the neck and thick streaks of vibhuthi on the forehead. He

manifested himself on earth as a redoubtable scholar. He moved from village to village and

began enchanting the people through his enrapturing discourses. His splendorous

personality and deep scholarship attracted the people; thousands gathered to hear him and

followed him from place to place. Brahmins invited him to their settlements and honoured

him. His arrival was celebrated as a festival, with rich feasting.

While Narayana was being feted thus, Lakshmi too appeared on earth as a great Yogini

(Female Ascetic). She too proceeded from village to village enlightening the people on the

Atma through her discourses. Women assembled to hear her fascinating speeches in waveafter wave, in massive numbers. They prayed that she should honour their homes with a

visit and partake of the feast they were most eager to offer. In reply, she informed them that

she was bound by some vows which made it difficult for her to accept their request. She

would not eat out of plates already in use in the homes. She said that she should be allowed

to bring her own cups and plates with her. The women were yearning so deeply for hosting

her that they accepted the condition. Whatever her vow, they were ready to respect it.

Invitations came from every woman from every place.

The Yogini reached the house where she was to take food the first day and took out from the

bag she had with her a gold plate, a few gold cups and a gold 'tumbler' (lota) to hold

drinking water. These she spread before herself for the various items of the menu. When the

meal was over, she left the place, leaving the precious golden articles to be taken by the

host. She had a new set for each day, she said.

The news spread. The villages where Narayana was holding his delightful discourses also

heard the wonderful happenings of the Yogini's gifts. The Brahmins who were staunch

admirers of the far-famed scholar also rushed to invite the Yogini to their homes for lunch!

The Yogini told them that they ought to drive the Pundit out before she could enter theirsettlement. She would not set foot there so long as the person continued to stay there! She

was adamant on that point. Their greed for gold was so strong that they forced the Pundit,

whom they had adored so long and with so much pomp, to go out of their village.

Thereafter, the Yogini entered the Brahmin settlement, gave discourses, partook of feasts

arranged in her honour and presented the golden plates and cups to each of her hosts. Thus,

the Yogini managed to get the Pundit driven out of every place where he sought recognition

and attention. Instead, she secured the worship of people everywhere. Unable to bear the

universal insult, the Pundit cast off the role and Narayana disappeared from the e
