First Part – Chapter 1

Page 3: Naty

It is 3 p.m. in a small town in England. At this time, people usually go to a very good café, which is the only one in the town and is the best place to

go to, drink and talk.A beautiful girl works in this café. She is so pretty and kind that a lot of boys

have a crush on her, but there's one that likes her the most. Every single day he comes to the café just to see her.

Task 1

Everybody's having a calm and quiet time at the café. Suddenly, everyone shouts because a small box crosses the window of the café, which is next to the balcony. Unfortunately, the girl is hit by the potsherd.

Today, it is not different. There he is, sitting at the first table facing the balcony, where the girl usually stays, observing with his loving eyes that he can't take off of her. Although she is not very sure of it, she does think he loves her.

The guy is running distressed to help her, while the others are asking themselves what had just happened. But now he's glad because he noticed that she's just unconscious, it was nothing serious.

It takes some time, but the girl wakes up, and, with Matt, realizes the "small box" was a brick. They try to find the person who did that, but they can't do anything.

Now Matt and Kate are thinking that the reason why that happened was not a special one. Soho is always agitated and full of surprises, and Matt is thinking that was good for Kate to see him in a whole different way.

Task 2Soho, in the centre of London, is where Matt lives and works (he takes drinks to shops and cafés). That’s why he knows Soho very well. He knows that, in the day, it’s famous for its music and films; at night, people go to restaurants. All kind of restaurants: expensive, cheap, Italian, Chinese restaurants and Internet cafés. In such a place anything and anyone can be bought. There are a lot of nice people, but there are also lots of people who are not very nice.

There’s something else that Matt knows very well in Soho: Paolo and his Web Café (where you can find not just computers and coffee, but Maltese pizza as well). It is where he often has his morning coffee. Paolo comes from Malta and does everything in the café, with the help of her daughter, Kate. She a student and she’s the reason why Matt goes there so often. Anything else, but Kate, with her brown eyes and her smile. But now, there’s no reason to smile.

Task 2

Everything was calm that morning, until something really strange happened. Everybody shouted when a small box crossed the café window, making a loud noise. Matt tried to see who did that, but there was no one there.

He asked Kate if she was all right. She replied that she was fine. Her father then ran into the room thinking that Matt had done something to Kate, but soon she explained to him what had actually happened. Then Kate asked, “Was it those men?”, and Paolo said: “Yes, I think it was”. But Matt couldn’t understand.

Task 1

In a small town of England, there is a Web Café. Just a minute ago, a brick crossed the café window. The owner and his assistant run quickly to see what had just happened. The assistant picks up the brick, which has a note.

They look at the note, but he can’t read it because it’s written in another language. He says to his assistant , "Go back to work; I’ll see what I can do about this.’ Then he goes to deliver the drinks, still thinking about the note.

After he finishes his work, he goes back to the café. He almost runs, because he really wants to know about the note. But the owner’s not there. He turns to the clerk, a pretty girl, and asks where the café owner is, but she simply replies that he went to a market to buy things for the café. He then asks her about the note. She says it is nothing. It is just someone with nothing better to do than disturb people.

After the brick crosses the café window, Matt and Kate take it and realize that there was a piece of paper attached, with something written. He doesn’t understand it, because it is written in Maltese and Paolo doesn’t want to tell him anything about it, because he is not family.

Task 2

Then he asks Kate the same thing and she asks him to come back later, because, at that moment, she can’t talk. And that is what he does. Then she starts to explain him the whole thing she knows. She says that, eight years ago, two men that her father met in Malta came to Soho and talked to him leaving him very unhappy. Those two men were the ones who bought the new computers for the café.

Then Paolo comes and says that Bob – the boy who usually takes their pizzas to people – is not working for them anymore, because he found out the truth about the men. Kate volunteers herself to deliver the pizzas, but her father is afraid. She notices it and tries to calm him down by saying that Matt would go with her. Matt is absolutely shocked.
