Nature at 150: evidence in pursuit of truth A century and a half has seen momentous changes in science. But evidence and transparency are more important than ever before

"On 4 November 1869, the first issue of Nature made its way into the world. Its ambition was intellectually bold and commercially risky: to bring news of the latest discoveries and inventions to scientists and the public alike.

In this, Nature’s 150th anniversary issue, we’re celebrating and remembering many of the notable discoveries that authors have communicated in the journal’s pages, along with the agenda-setting journalism and commentary that has always been an essential part of our voice.

There is, of course, no definitive list of the most influential or important pieces of research that Nature has published. A series of News & Views articles explains the importance and lasting impact of ten key papers from our archive. We also chose a long list of 150 interesting, illuminating, entertaining and sometimes controversial articles — one for every year of our life — and have been posting one per day on social media for the past few months. But even compiling this longer list involved vigorous and sometimes tense discussion among the editors.

At the start of the year, we also began discussing what to feature on our anniversary issue cover. The result — a data analysis of Nature’s archive which highlights the multidisciplinary scope of the journal — is rendered as the extraordinary fireworks you can see on the cover and in a video and interactive visualization. Our anniversary issue includes a rich variety of written and multimedia content on the past, present and future of Nature and of research itself." [source: nature.com]

New journal – BMJ Surgery, Interventions, & Health Technologies This new open access journal publishes original research on complex healthcare interventions

Intended to encourage higher standards of science and more rapid dissemination of new knowledge in the field, BMJ Surgery, Interventions, & Health Technologies provides a high-impact international platform for both early and later stage clinical studies as well as long-term assessment and surveillance studies that meet high standards of design and reporting.

The introductory editorial states: “BMJ Surgery, Interventions, & Health Technologies aims to provide a forum for serious scientific study of innovative surgical and interventional procedures and devices.

Our ambition is to publish high quality evidence at all stages of the life cycle of new

operations, therapeutic devices and procedures.

We intend to promote high scientific standards by encouraging reporting using the IDEAL Recommendations, which form an integrated evaluation pathway for complex interventions, but will welcome all types of rigorous and scientifically valid studies in relevant areas.

We will, of course, welcome randomised trials, but are particularly interested in promoting publication of both early stage studies that explain the development and optimisation of new techniques and reports from registries and “real world evidence” sources evaluating the performance of devices and techniques already in common practice. Rigorous studies focused on improving the function of the clinical team delivering the intervention through quality improvement or other approaches are also welcome.

A strong focus on health technologies will include a ‘Policy and Regulation section’ for news and statements from official bodies and expert observers, for example, alerts about technology, or legislative debates on relevant health policy.” [1]

Recent AIHW reports The burden of vaccine preventable diseases in Australia This report presents detailed methods and results from the Burden of Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Australia study which focused on diseases with vaccines on Australia’s National Immunisation Program (NIP) schedule.

The study found the rate of vaccine preventable burden decreased by 31% between 2005 and 2015.

The decrease was driven by falls for diseases that have had vaccines added to, or vaccine eligibility extended on, the NIP schedule during the past 20 years, such as HPV, pneumococcal disease and rotavirus. Read now.

Potentially preventable hospitalisations in Australia by age groups and small geographic areas, 2017–18 The potentially preventable hospitalisations (PPH) indicator is a proxy measure of primary care effectiveness. PPH are certain hospital admissions that potentially could have been prevented by timely and adequate health care in the community.

There are 22 conditions for which hospitalisation is considered potentially preventable, across 3 broad categories: chronic, acute and vaccine-preventable conditions.

This 2017–18 data update provides information by Primary Health Network (PHN) and Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3). Rates for two age groups (for people aged under 65 years, and 65 years and over) are also included. Read now.

Congenital heart disease in Australia Globally, congenital heart disease affects around 9 in every 1,000 babies born. In Australia, a large number of children, young people and adults live with congenital heart disease.

This report presents latest statistics and trends on the incidence of congenital heart disease, and on hospitalisation and mortality. Read now.

Injury mortality and socioeconomic influence in Australia 2015–16 This report examined the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and injury mortality in Australia and looked at the effects of SES on injury deaths by age group, by sex and by a selection of external causes of injury.

Overall, there was a strong association between increasing socioeconomic disadvantage and the likelihood of injury. This association was most evident for transport crash deaths, unintentional poisoning deaths and male suicide deaths. Read now.

Trends in injury deaths, Australia, 1999–00 to 2016–17 This report focuses on trends in injury deaths that occurred over the period 1999–00 to 2016–17. The age-standardised rate of injury deaths decreased from 55.4 to 47.2 deaths per 100,000 between 1999–00 and 2004–05 and has changed little after that.

Rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were generally at least twice as high as rates for non-Indigenous Australians over the period from 2001–02 to 2016–17. Read now.

[online] Treating infants and young children impacted by trauma: interventions that promote healthy development / Joy Osofsky, Phillip T. Stepka, Lucy S. King. American Psychological Association, 2017. Infants and young children are vulnerable to multiple types of

trauma, including neglect and sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Some believe that young children are not impacted by trauma and that, if they are, they will simply “grow out of it.” Continuing research, however, clearly demonstrates that trauma can alter young children's neurobiological development and place them at risk for behavioral, social, emotional, linguistic, and cognitive problems across the lifespan. Despite these alarming findings, there is increasing evidence that early

interventions can foster recovery and enhance resilience.

Distinguished clinical and developmental psychologist Joy Osofsky and her coauthors distill the vast literature on childhood trauma in this concise guide that reviews what effects these traumatic experiences can have and which treatments are best suited for addressing them.

They provide a detailed framework for selecting the most appropriate intervention based on specific criteria. Vivid case examples teach clinicians how to apply these treatments in real scenarios and support parents and caregivers as key attachment figures and sources of security in a child's life.

The 6th edition has been extensively revised, with new authors, rewritten content, improved figures and tables, and many new cases throughout.
