Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted bycirculating blood upon the walls of bloodvessels.
Blood pressure may be expressed as:
Blood Pressure = Cardiac Output x Peripheral
Vascular Resistance (PVR)Where Cardiac output is-
Cardiac Output = Stroke Volume × Heart rate

Blood pressure is measure by the reading ofSystolic blood pressure and/or Diastolic bloodpressure.
Category Systolic BP (mm Hg) Diastolic BP (mm Hg)
Hypotension <90 <60
Normal 90-120 60-80
Pre-hypertension 120-139 80-89
Stage I hypertension 140-159 90-99
Stage II hypertension ≥160 ≥100

Hypotension can be defined as either
A sustained systolic blood pressure of less than90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or
A sustained diastolic blood pressure of lessthan 60 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg)
Hypertension is defined as either
A sustained systolic blood pressure of greaterthan 140 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or
A sustained diastolic blood pressure of greaterthan 90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg)

Imbalance of blood pressure mainly depend onthe two parameters:
1. Peripheral vascular resistance
2. Cardiac output
Without these, heart rate and stroke volumewhich are related to cardiac output, blood
volume, capacitance of the venous system arealso related to the blood pressure.

1. Hypertension may occur secondary to otherdisease processes
2. Essential hypertension (90%), a disorder of
unknown origin affecting the blood pressureregulating mechanism
3. Family history of hypertension increases thechance of develop hypertensive disease.
4. Blacks are four fold more susceptible tohypertension than Whites.
5. Age and obesity

6. It occurs more often among middle-agedmales than among middle-aged females.
7. Stressful lifestyle
8. Diet such as high dietary intake of sodium, fatetc.
9. Smoking and tobacco products.

Blood pressure∝ Cardiac output and peripheralvascular resistance
These two are controlled mainly by two
overlapping control mechanisms:
1. The baroreflexes, which are mediated by thesympathetic nervous system, and
2. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

Baroreceptors in the kidney respond to reducedarterial pressure and to sympatheticstimulation of β- adrenoceptors by releasing
the enzyme renin.
By this process kidney provides a long termcontrol of blood pressure by altering the bloodvolume.

Blood pressure problem is considered to be veryserious health problem in present day worldthat can cause heart disease and increase therisk of stroke.
This problem is termed as the silent killer. The unfortunate reality is that more than half of
the people taking multiple drugs for thisproblem, cannot manage their condition to anormal level. The good news is that over 85%of those who have this problem can normalizetheir blood pressure naturally through lifestyle
modifications.

1. Intake of Na+
Salt: Low sodium intake and greatersodium loss or high sodium intake can affect theblood pressure.
Decrease Na+ concentration
Decrease water retention
Decrease blood volume
Decrease cardiac output
Decrease blood pressure

2. Anxiety or stressful lifestyle: Anxiety ortension stimulate Sympathetic nervous system.
Anxiety or tensionfree life
Normalsympathetic
activity
Normal activity ofβ1 adrenoceptors
on heart
Normal cardiacoutput
Normal bloodpressure
Normal activity ofα1 adrenoceptorson smooth muscle
No increase PVR

3. Diet: Intake less amount fat normalize bloodpressure.
Decreasefat intake
No fatdeposition
in bloodvessel
Maintainlow PVR
Normalizeblood

4. Avoid smoking: Smoking even secondarysmoking should be avoided or stopped.

5. Water of coconut: Green coconut water is a veryeffective natural medication for normalize bloodpressure, but contraindicated to the hypotensionpatients.
Increase K+ concentration
Decrease Na+ & waterretention
Decreaseblood volume
Decreasecardiac
output
Decreaseblood

6. Lose extra weight: By maintaining required weightaccording our height can normalize bloodpressure.
Extra weight
Produce extra pressure on bloodvessels
Produce vasoconstriction
Increased PVR
Increased blood pressure

7. Antioxidant: An antioxidant, help to stabilize cellactivity by reducing in blood pressure bymaintenance decrease vasoconstriction.
Examples: Vitamin C: Active compound is NO, act against
constricted blood vessels.
Grape Seed Extract: Active compound isProanthocyanidins, 20folds more potent than Vit.C
Olive Leaf Extract: Active compound isOleuropein, reduces LDL cholesterol.

8. Garlic: Garlic has achieved a legendary reputationas an antihypertensive medication. It's been usedin China for centuries for that purpose, and the
Japanese government officially recognizes garlic as
a blood-pressure depressor. American scientistsfirst tried garlic against high blood pressure in1921.
Garlic activate nitric oxide synthase and increase theNitric oxide level in the body and Nitric oxidework against constricted blood vesseles.
Contraindication: Garlic can reduce the ability of
blood clot.

10. Apples: Apples contain potassium andphosphorus and are low in sodium. Appleswith honey have long been used for to reduce
blood pressure problems.11. Papayas: Half a papaya has more vitamin C
and potassium than an entire orange.
12. Cucumbers: Cucumbers are a good source ofpotassium, phosphorus and calcium as well asbeing a good diuretic.
