International Business Machines (IBM) is

a multinational company present in various

countries. It is presently working in areas like

Systems and Technology, Software Solutions

and Engineering & Technology Services.

Technical Software labs (TSL) is one of the

largest business units of IBM, it mainly works on

developing new and innovative products,

technology and solutions for the clients of IBM.

TSL is also one of the largest middleware

companies in the world. The people here work in

teams on various state of the art technologies. It

works on building Development Tools and

specifically Collaboration Technologies which

include the expansion of knowledge and

functionality in different fields by working with

services from varied backgrounds.

Apart from these specific areas, the working

teams also have excellence in various

technologies like Networking, Processor

Architecture, Virtualisation, and Super

Computing. The company also has very high

level of integrated technologies in Engineering

and Technology Services. The teams under this

create new electronic products from entire

systems to subsystems to complex chips or cards.

Mr. Ramakrishna, Managing Director of

TSL, is currently very happy with the kind of

work TSL is doing all over the world. The

solutions provided by them are well renowned

and the credibility on their domain expertise has

increased day by day. All the above stated factors

have resulted in attracting a lot of clients for the

software development in various pioneering and

modern applications. Since this is one of the

leading companies which provide end-to-end

solutions to customers from hardware to

software, services and consulting, the clients find

it efficient as a solution provider. Most of the

clients find it really easy to work with a single

platform provider.

The present organizational structure of

TSL includes various levels. The hierarchy is

mentioned in detail at the end of this section (Fig

1). There is one CEO for the IBM with different

country heads and regional heads. The next level

describes the role of Managing Directors for

different business units that exist in IBM, one of

them being TSL. At the next level, Divisional

Heads are present which take care of various

deliverables, as a whole, for a particular client

account. The further sub division is based on the

types and the number of projects and is, thus,

handled by the Divisional Heads only. The

upcoming projects in a particular account call for

the formulation of a new team from the existing

resources or from the process of new recruitment.

It wants to develop expertise in

developing software solutions that supports

healthcare delivery using a services-oriented

platform.

A new client has approached TSL with a project

in the healthcare

sector. Keeping in

mind the brilliant

opportunity of

growth, TSL has

decided to start anew division dedicated to this sector. Given

below are the client description and the project

requirements.

Established in 1976 in Stockholm, Sweden,

MEDIC is a research based firm that is a marketleader in the field of providing solutions to the

hospitals and medical institutions after doing

image processing.

MEDIC has approached TSL to develop software

packages that can compare the diagnostic images

of the patients with standard images and forecast

solutions for the detecting ailments on the basis

of image processing.

In other wordsMEDIC wants to develop

computer based highly accurate diagnostic

software solutions.

CLIENT DESCRIPTION

MEDIC was the first company to

develop and provide commercialized

SPECT reconstruction software in

1978 and image co-registration

(fusion) software in 1992.

MEDIC is driven by quality products

and tailor made solutions to meet the

special demands of the customers.

MEDIC leads the market through

innovation with more than 30 years

of excellence in Nuclear Medicine,

PET /CT /MR and Multi-Modality

imaging solutions.

The following details will give an idea about the

application of the software packages:

1. The patient suffering from any ailment will

undergo a battery of diagnostic tests as part of

the normal procedure at a hospital

2. The digital image of the graphical reports (e.g.

X-Ray) will be uploaded in the software as

INPUT.

3. The software tool will then compare the

diagnostic image of the patient with the standard

library of images intelligently

4. On the basis of the image processing,

comparison and analysis, the software will

predict the expected ailment and the most

probable solution for the same as OUTPUT

The rationale behind developing the software

packages is to provide tentative prognosis to the

patients as soon as they get the report. Also it

will come handy for the medical practitioners

while suggesting the necessary course of medical

treatment. In conclusion the time-delay

(diagnosisprognosis cycle) will be reduced

significantly.MEDIC is looking for a long term association

with TSL which will include maintenance of

software solutions and new product development

to exploit opportunities which may present

themselves in future due to advances in this field.

Due to its high standards of quality products,

MEDIC is willing to pay TSL a premium price

for product development.

Deliverables for Preliminary Round

Participants are required to analyse the given case which gives details to develop a software packageaccording to clients requirements.

Based on the skill required for the job the participants are to come up with a recruitment strategy to meet

the projects manpower requirements.

Groups are required to submit an abstract which includes the following details:

1) Based on the requirements of the project designthe manpower structure needed for the project

with exact number of people needed at each

level.

2) Design the Job Descriptions and JobSpecifications for each position of the team.

3) Decide on the recruitment strategy, whichshould include whom to hire (fresher/ lateral for

each position), from where to hire and

advertisements for the same.

4) Also propose the budget for the project tobe conveyed to the client.

Each team will comprise of 2 members from the same institute

.A student cannot be part of more than one team

One team can submit only one entry Only students of full time MBA can register

There is no restriction on the number of teams from an institute

The participants should submit the abstract in pdf format.

Each entry should have a cover page mentioning team name, participants, email ids and mobile

nos. of the team member(s) and the name of the institute they belong to. The format for the same

has been mentioned under.
