Provide Incentives for Watershed Stewardship on Private Lands

Program Summary: Greenbelt offers the following incentives for watershed stewardship on private

lands: 1) Compost Workshops / Discounted Backyard Compost Bins 2) Rain Garden Capstone Project 3)

Great Greenbelt Rain Barrel Event 4) Tour of Watershed Best Management Practices 5) Rain Garden

Workshop Series.

1) Compost Workshops / Discounted Compost Bins

Public Works hosted a series of educational Compost Workshops on March 5, 2016, November 5, 2016,

and March 18, 2017. After the free compost workshops, over 50 discounted compost bins were sold to

more than 50 Greenbelt residents through a grant from backyardcomposting.org. Individuals who were

unable to attend the workshops could pick up a discounted compost bin at an alternate time.

2) Rain Garden Capstone Project

The Chesapeake Conservation Corps Member, Connor Roessler, performed education and outreach to

various individuals and community groups about rain gardens as a capstone project. A tour of rain

gardens and other watershed best management practices was featured at the Greenbelt Public Works

Open House on May 20, 2017. A Rain Garden Workshop was also held on June 24, 2017 at Greenbelt

Public Works. Meetings and workshops resulted in over sixty individuals and four community groups

educated about rain garden design, installation, and financing through the Rain Check Rebate Program.

3) Greenbelt Great Rain Barrel Event

The City of Greenbelt Department of Public Works partnered with Prince George’s County Department

of the Environment to provide discounted 50-gallon rain barrels with the offer of a Rain Check Rebate.

Residents pre-ordered over 50 rain barrels online from February 4, 2017 – March 18, 2017. On April 1,

2017, Plumbers and Gasfitters UA Local 5 offered an installation demonstration for residents who

ordered rain barrels and a chance to get answers to questions.

4) Tour of Watershed Best Management Practices

Public Works led a tour of watershed best management practices at Springhill Lake Recreation Center in

honor of Earth Day on April 22, 2017. A total of 42 individuals learned about permeable pavement, rain

cisterns / barrels, rain gardens, and financing options through Prince George’s County Rain Check Rebate

Program. Articles in the News Review were published to further inform the community about the

benefits of permeable pavement among other watershed best management practices.

5) Rain Garden Workshop Series

A series of three educational Rain Garden Workshops taught over 60 participants about Prince George’s County Rain Check Rebate application, how to assess a property for stormwater problems and opportunities, toured local rain gardens, and got real-time help with rain garden design. The workshop series took place on January 30, 2016, February 27, 2016, and March 19, 2016 at Greenbelt Public Works. These workshops were organized by:
