Tough Family Life Linked to Chromosome Aging
WhenPrincetonUniversityresearchersanalyzeddatafromarepresentative
sampleof40African-AmericanboysenrolledintheFragileFamiliesandChildWellbeingStudythatfollowedchildrenborninmajorU.S.citiesbetween1998and2000,theyde-terminedthatthosethatlivedthrough9yearsofagewithless-stablefamilies,suchasparentswithmultiplepartnersandharshorhostileparentingstyles,hadahigherprobabilityofhavingshortertelomerescomparedwithother
children.Telomereswere,onaverage,40percentlongeramongchildrenfromstablefamilies. TelomeresarethesegmentsofDNAateitherendofachromosomethatpro-tecttheendsfromdeteriorationorfusionwithneighboringchromosomes.Shortertelomerescandecreaselifeexpectancybyreducingthenumberoftimesourcellscandivide,andscientistsarediscoveringthataperson’slivingenvironmentmayleadtothecondition. Usinglargecohort(agegroup)studydatafromtheNetherlandsStudyofDe-pressionandAnxiety,anothergroupofresearchersfromAmsterdam’sVrijeUni-versityfoundsignificantlyshortertelomerelengthamongthosewithhigherstressmarkers;theshorterlengthwasalsoassociatedwithagingapproximately10yearsfaster.Inaddition,thescientistsobservedsignificantlyshortertelomerelengthamongpeoplewithdepressivesymptomslastinglongerthanfouryears;theshorterlengthcorrelatedwithbothlongerandmoreseveredepression.
Parents’ Smoking Linked to Artery Damage in ChildrenResearchersfromAustralia’sUniversityofTas-
maniahavefoundthatchildrenexposedtothesecondhandsmokeoftheirparentswilllikelyfaceabnormallythickenedcarotidarterieslaterinlife.Thefinding,publishedintheEuropeanHeartJour-nal,followed3,776childrenthatparticipatedintheCardiovascularRiskinYoungFinnsStudyandtheChildhoodDeterminantsofAdultHealthStudy. Thechildrenweredividedintogroupsaccord-ingtowhetherneitherparentsmoked,oneparentsmokedorbothparentssmoked.Questionnaireresultswerecombinedwithultrasoundtestingtocorrelateexposureduringchildhoodwiththehealthofcarotidarteries,andresearchersconcludedthattheeffectsarepervasiveeven25yearslater. Thoseexposedtotwoparentalsmokersaschildrenhadsignificantlygreaterthicknessofinnercarotidarterywallsthandidchildrenwithnon-smokingparents.Theirarteriesalsoshowedsignsofprematureagingofmorethanthreeyearscom-paredtochildrenofnonsmokers.Theresearcherswrote,“Theremustbecontinuedeffortstoreducesmokingamongadultstoprotectyoungpeopleandtoreducetheburdenofcardiovasculardiseaseacrossthepopulation.”

Flaxseed Lowers Blood PressureEatingflaxseedreducesbloodpressure,accordingto
researchersfromCanada’sSt.BonifaceHospitalRe-searchCenter.Theyattributetheeffecttoitsomega-3fattyacids,lignansandfiber. Theresearchersexaminedtheeffectsofflaxseedonsystolicanddiastolicbloodpressureinpatientswithperipheralarterydisease,aconditiontypicallymarkedbyhypertension.Patientsconsumedavarietyoffoodsthatcollectivelycontained30gramsofmilledflaxseedoraplaceboeachdayforsixmonths.Theflaxseedgroupexperiencedsignificantlyincreasedplasmalevelsofcertainomega-3fattyacidsandloweraveragesystolicbloodpressure(by10mmHg)anddiastolicbloodpressure(by7mmHg).Thoseintheflaxseedgroupwithinitialsys-tolicbloodpressurelevelsover140mmHgsawreductionsaveraging15mmHg.
Pine Bark Extract Reduces Perimenopausal SymptomsResearchpublishedintheJournalof
ReproductiveMedicineconfirmsthatpinebarkextractcansignificantlyreducesymptomsofmenopauseandperimenopause,includingrestlesslegssyndromeandhotflashes.Forthreemonths,170perimenopausalwomenweregiven30milligramsofPycnogenolpatentedpinebarkextractoraplacebotwiceaday.Althoughaplaceboeffectwasnoted,thesupplementsignificantlyimprovedallbuttwosymptomsandwasespeciallyeffectiveinimprovingvasomotorandinsomnia/sleeppatterns.TheseverityofsymptomsamongthePycnogenolgroup,asmeasuredbytheKuppermanIndex,decreased56percentmorethanfortheplacebogroup.
