    THE NATIVITY SCENE

Try Our New Jazz/Gospel Eucharist!Nativitys new 11:30 Jazz/Gospel Eucharist started on August 18. It features Eucharist, sermon, and some terrific,

heartfelt, and lively music! The jazz and gospel traditions have deep roots in American culture. The music includessome familiar gospel hymns that we dont normally sing at our 9:30 service, some terrific choral pieces, and some jazz

instrumental numbers. Our gospel choir sings twice a month; a smaller singing group sings twice a month, and jazz

instrumentalists play once a month. Come try it out and bring a friend who might enjoy a bit different take on the

    Episcopal Eucharist!

Nativitys New Welcome PatioWhen you come to church in September, you will notice

new addition to our front entryway a new Welcome Patio! It

features new trees, benches for socializing and waiting for rides,

and new landscaping. We wanted to make our front entryway

more inviting and help it become a gathering place for ourcongregation.

We are fortunate to have our new patio sponsored by U.E

(Ed) Garrison, in memory of his late wife, Mary. Mary Garrison

was a member of Nativity until she died four years ago. She was

sociable and welcoming, keeping an eye out for newcomers. A

place of welcome and gathering for the congregation is a lovely

way to remember her. We give thanks to Ed for his kindness in

sponsoring the patio, and we look forward to years of

    enjoying it!

In our Sunday morningJourney in Faith courserecently, I asked the group tohelp me think about the

question: what is a church for?The group helped me come upwith this list:

Worship we share the Eucharist, praiseGod, and stand in Gods presence together,

receiving nourishment for our lives asChristians in the world.

Learning we learn about our faith andour relationship with Christ.

Care for each other we form a

community of caring, prayer, healing, andjoy together, building relationships thatreflect Gods love.

Service to others we care not only forthose inside the church, but for thoseoutside, serving those in need in the worldoutside our doors.

Evangelism we dont hoard the treasureof the gospel for ourselves, but share it withthose who dont yet know Christs love forthem.

Community service we work to become acenter of activity in our community,

providing meeting space and support forcommunity groups.

At Nativity, we are doing some great ministry ineach of these categories. But today I want to

highlight Worship and Learning. At Nativity, webelieve that both worship and learning are lifelongprocesses. We are committed to providingopportunities for lifelong growth in discipleship for

all ages. You can see the effects of this commitmentat Nativity:

We provide a single Christian Formation houron Sundays for all ages, with high-qualitylearning opportunities for everyone. We want

to make sure adults, not just children, havethe opportunity to learn, because there isalways something new to discover about ourfaith!

We make sure our Sunday schedule gives our

children a chance to worship. We expect tosee our children in worship, and we are gladto share it with them! Even for our youngestchildren who attend Childrens Chapel duringthe 9:30 service, this is a worship time, withreadings, prayers, and a short sermon oractivity. The worship in Childrens Chapel

parallels what adults are doing in the mainworship service.

We are adding lots of new options for adultformation, including three classes on Sundaymornings and new opportunities at othertimes being added this month. Learning is

    important for all ages!

Come and join us for both worship and learning, each Sunday at Nativity!!!!!!!"#$%&!

God respects me when I work; but God loves me when I sing. --

    Rabindranath Tago

I could tell you that singing releases endorphins powerful feel-

good neurotransmitters into the bloodstream. (TRUE) I could tell you tha

singing adds years to your life. (TRUE) I could tell you that, on average, singers report a significantly higher level of satisfaction with life. (TRUE)

These are not, however, the reasons I sing. (Well theyre not the

    only reasons.)

Except for the existence of the people I love, I find the act of makin

music to be my best evidence of a benevolent God. Maybe that sounds like

Im overstating the case, but I dont think so.

There is a place for everything in the grand scheme of life, a reason for

everything to be. On Maslows hierarchy of needs, we need air to breathe.

Water, food, shelter. A sense of belonging and self-esteem.

Artistic endeavor, though its up there at the top of the hierarchy in the realm of self-actualization, filed

under creativity. While were all slogging away at our workaday lives, trying to feed our heads and pay for ou

cellular phone plans: how much time do we actually get to spend at the apex of the pyramid?

The act of singing puts me there. Singing brings me close to being my best self. Since my best self is ca

in Gods image, singing brings me close to God. QED.

As a bonus, its my understanding that girls dig guys who can sing. So you know, take that, Maslow.

Steve Smith is a bass in the Church of the Nativity Choir, and it is one of the great privileges of his life. We are

always in need of more singers. You would be most welcome! Contact Dr. Ilona for more information at

Nativity Scene Jr. Page 8Faith Formation - infant through fifth grade, By SHELLEY BYRNES, Director of Childrens and Family Ministries

Christian Formation is fully underway for the new year and the classrooms are full of curious and happy faces! Wehave some new leaders as well as new families and everyone is getting to know each other. Due to service changes andfeedback from leaders, parents and children, there are some changes to our program this year!

With the education hour defined on either end by a service, we want to use our time most efficiently. Therefore, wehave the children processing out after the choir from the 9:30 service. Watch for me with the cross and send your childrento Sunday School straight from the service!

    SUNDAY SCHOOL SNACKS

We want the children to have a snack in the classrooms so avoid the delay of the students stopping by the hospitality tableon their way to Sunday School. So I'm asking parents to please pick a week and sign up to bring a healthy snack for thechildren's Sunday School by emailing [email protected]. The Snack calendar is:

I'm are asking Snack Parents to join the students in recessing after the choir from the9:30 service or meet us in the classrooms at approximately 10:20 (in case of a shortsermon) if you will be going to the 11:30 service. Snack Parents will then visit withthe students in the classroom during their snack. Since we have some Sunday School Teachers who are doing double dutyand sing in the choir, this gives our leaders time to disrobe and get to the classrooms! At that point, the Snack Parents mayleave the classrooms to attend one of the three Adult Formation Opportunities available.

    SUNDAY SCHOOL CURRICULUM

In the Primary classroom (formerly known as Godly Play) we're using a new curriculumwhich so far is quite the hit with both children and leaders. Spark! is a Bible-basedcurriculum that tells the stories of the Bible. Each child receives his or her own illustrated

Story Bible. During the year, we explore a number of stories together and then break into agegroups based on spiritual/cognitive development levels.

The Pre-K/K group will focus on large concepts like love, hope, forgiveness, andbelonging. They will learn that they are loved, and will begin to have some familiarity withBible stories.

The first and second graders are beginning readers and can follow along and beginreading Bible stories on their own. At this age, they begin to focus on characters andsituations, and try to find themselves in the stories, learning that like the characters in theBible, we can draw strength from our relationships with God.

    Parents Coffee Clutch!

The Parents Coffee Clutch is coming together well. All parents, grandparents and

guardians are welcome! We meet in the Children's Gathering area just outside of theSunday School Classrooms. Please get your coffee and treats and join us there! Theschedule for September is:

    YouthWorks! 2013-2014San Diego, California

    Sunday June 21- Friday June 26, 2014

We are gearing up to start fundraising for our Mission Trip next summer. YouthWorks is an organization that createsmission trips for groups all over the country. NATYG will travel to San Diego and stay at the site YouthWorks hasselected to be their home for the summer. There will be other youth groups from all over the country there that weektoo. So, we will work with them at different service sites during the day, explore San Diego in the evening, worshiptogether at night, and close with NATYG before lights out each night. This is a time to serve outside of Arizona andgrow in our walk of faith together. This will be a great opportunity for us to meet other youth groups, serve others, andgrow within NATYG!

The cost per person is $289. There is a $60 deposit due by September 15th. This is to secure our place at the SanDiego site. A second $60 deposit will be due January 15, 2014. Scholarships are available, so dont let cost be afactor! The rest of the money will be raised throughout different activities during this year. Those students whoparticipate in the fundraisers will benefit from the money we collect. However, if students do not participate in thefundraisers they will not benefit from those funds.

If you have any other questions please let me know. I am very excited about this trip! It will be a great opportunity for NATYG.
