El Evangelio para este Primer Domingo de Cuaresma nos
recuerda que, cuando seamos tentados por nuestros deseos
egoístas, debemos enfocarnos en la forma de amar de Dios, que
fue ejemplificada por Jesús. He aquí algunos de los pensa-
mientos de San Francisco de Sales sobre cómo amar primero a
Dios, y después hacer lo que nosotros queremos.
Jesús fue tentado para así enseñarnos que durante el curso de
nuestra vida siempre tendremos que escoger entre el bien y el
mal. Aun cuando Jesús nos dice que la vida del cristiano
requiere un continuo rechazo a la maldad, y que siempre
escojamos la bondad y la verdad de Dios, Él también nos urge
a que caminemos con confianza por el sendero del amor como
los hijos más queridos de Dios. Cuando vivimos para hacer la
voluntad de Dios nada puede hacernos daño por que la fe en
Dios nos protege. El amor de Dios se convierte entonces en la
fuente de todos nuestros deseos.
Aun así, incluso si deseamos cumplir con la voluntad de Dios,
esto no significa que estamos exentos de que nuestro egoísmo
infecte nuestro pensamiento. Muchas personas que confiaron
en su propia fuerza para obrar las maravillas de Dios, fracasa-
ron cuando se hallaron en la línea de fuego; mientras que
aquellos que encontraron su fuerza en la ayuda de Dios logra-
ron milagros. Puede que sintamos que no tenemos la fuerza
suficiente para hacer frente a nuestros deseos egoístas. Pero no
debemos temer a nuestra debilidad. Ya que deseamos pertene-
cer enteramente a Dios, debemos confiar en que Su fuerza
nunca nos fallará cuando flaqueemos.
Aun cuando debemos adoptar una firme y reiterada resolución
de no caer deliberadamente en la imperfección, no debemos
sorprendernos si al final esto sucede. En esos momentos
debemos confiarnos a la bondad de Dios, quién no por esto nos
amará menos. Depositen gentilmente su corazón de vuelta en
las manos de Nuestros Señor, pidiéndole al mismo tiempo que
lo sane. Entonces encamínense de nuevo por el sendero de la
moralidad, haciendo uso de las virtudes que contrarrestan sus
deseos egoístas.
A medida que vayamos creciendo en la santidad, más pertur-
bados nos sentiremos al reconocer nuestras faltas. Cuando nos
damos cuenta de que no somos los santos que esperábamos ser,
nos sentimos desanimados en la búsqueda de la verdadera
virtud. Pero no se apresuren tanto. Empiecen por vivir su vida
con rectitud, y cumplir con las tareas propias del estado en el
que se encuentran. La perfección consiste en llevar a cabo
pequeñas obras de acuerdo a nuestra vocación, con amor, por
medio del amor y en nombre del amor. Confíen en Dios.
El transformará todos sus deseos en algo sagrado, cuando
El decida hacerlo.
