School News: This last Tuesday 6-8 graders from all the Catholic Schools gathered at St. John Vianney in an event centered around the Rosary. The event was sponsored by the Catholic Advisory Board, a group of students who represent each of the Catholic Schools in Janesville. The group of 14 students meet monthly, alternating between the schools, to design events for middle school kids that focus on service, prayer, and relationship building. On Tuesday's event, the 160 students gathered to pray a rosary altogether before breaking out into groups to each make their own cord and bead rosary. One of the goals of Advisory this year has been to make a deeper connection between faith and prayer and the world we live. As a result, the event ended with a speaker who talked with the kids about responding to communities in emergency situations and the role of faith in those times. Groups like Student Advisory show a promising future for the students, but also for the entire Catholic community in Janesville.

Annual Catholic Appeal

On March 2-3, Father Rob will lead the in-pew process for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Those who have not made a pledge by mail will be asked to do so at this time.

Please read the annual appeal tabloid, available here at church today. It provides a detailed explanation of the use of the funds that you are asked to give. This appeal

funds many ministries throughout the diocese and helps many in need.

Each household is asked to make a generous gift. In doing so, please consider making a pledge, payable over six months.

On March 2-3, one member from each household will be asked to fill out a commitment envelope during mass. Thank you in advance for your support of our parish, the diocese and the work of the church throughout the world.

Thanks to all who shared their time and talents to serve the men during our week at the Gift’s Men’s Shelter. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful family of volunteers here at Nativity Mary Parish. This is such a rewarding ministry, and once again you have made St. Mary’s proud. God is good. Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

"But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." - Lk 6:35-36

************************************************************** This Sunday, Jesus continues his challenging Sermon on the Mount. "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you, give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back." Words like these are challenging! Many of us have grown up in a culture of independence and retaliation against those who harm us. Today's Gospel reminds us that the way of the world is not necessarily the way of the disciple. In many spiritual texts, saints describe the first stage of the spiritual life as mercenary love of God. That is, we love Him because he "pays" us with graces and good things. Consider for a moment, why do you do the good that you do? Take volunteering, for example. How often do we talk about the good feelings service evokes and how you "get so much more than you give." This is still based on an attitude of return on our investment. Would we volunteer if we knew it was good to do, but we didn't "feel" good afterward? What if the people we helped seemed ungrateful, or if someone at the food pantry stole $20 out of our purse? It can be difficult to love people when we think we might not get anything back. "For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?" As Christians, we are called to imitate God. We follow a God who loves not only His closest friends, but who loves betrayers, deniers, and crucifiers. The Christian walk is one of perseverance and sacrifice. What does your love look like?

Would You Like A Pastoral Visit?

REMINDER: If you, a family member or someone you

know is confined or hospitalized and would benefit from a

pastoral visit, please contact your parish office and let them

know. Staff does not always know of hospital admissions for

a variety of reasons and often has no way of knowing of other

situations in which a parish contact would be beneficial.

Pray the Rosary with the Knights of Columbus

Next Sunday immediately after the 8:30 AM Mass at St. Mary’s, the Knights of Columbus will lead anyone interested in praying the Rosary. We celebrate this Rosary on each first Sunday of the month and welcome you to join us. The Rosary only takes 20 minutes and it is truly rewarding.

The Rosary is arguably the most recognizable Catholic devotion. The Rosary is one of the most powerful weapons in our arsenal for spiritual warfare and one of the greatest aids in the pursuit of a fruitful spiritual life. Blessed Virgin Mary has promised us that the rosary serves as a spiritual weapon that every soldier for Christ and His Church needs to fight successfully in the spiritual battle that comprises much of our earthly sojourn. Those who trust in the Rosary and are faithful to Mary through it will have access to many additional graces that those who choose not to pray it won’t. Graces we desperately need to help us make it through the narrow gate that leads to heaven. The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against Hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin, and dispel heresy. The Rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Whoever recites the Rosary devoutly, reflecting on the mysteries, shall never be overwhelmed by misfortune. He will not experience the anger of God nor will he perish by an unprovided death. The sinner will be converted; the just will persevere in grace and merit eternal life. (Catholic Information Services)

ECHO – Everyone Cooperating To Help Others Life is an ECHO. What you Send Out, you Get Back!

Did you know?

ECHO began here at St. Mary’s in 1970 through the efforts of a group of concerned parishioners. Since then ECHO has expanded into an ecumenical ministry to the people of the Janesville area and is currently sponsored by over 30 Christian organizations.

Each weekend St. Mary’s parishioners are invited to bring a can or box of non-perishable food for ECHO when they come to Mass. This food may be placed in a specially designated basket at each entrance of the church.

ECHO seeks to serve human needs and God’s justice by providing help for emergency situations. ECHO not only cooperates with public and private agencies to respond to human needs, but also seeks to meet emergency needs in ways not readily available through other sources.

Services provided include: Food pantry, emergency lodging and rent assistance, gas and bus assistance, schools supplies, toiletries, diapers and baby food, Thanksgiving and Easter baskets, Christmas toys, Christmas day dinner, case management and information referral services for persons requiring public aid or help from other agencies.

The ECHO office is located at 65 S. High Street. For more information about ECHO call the ECHO office at 608-754-5333 during regular business hours Monday through Thursday 9 AM to Noon and 1-4 PM and on Friday from 9 AM to Noon. Or visit them on the web at www.echojanesville.org.

What’s Happening

Illness & Preparation for the Mass

While Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, a serious reason may cause you to miss. Being sick is a serious reason for being excused from the obligation to attend Mass. If you have the flu or some other serious and/or contagious illness, please stay home. (Another common serious reason is severe weather.)

If you feel you have a cold or if you have a compromised immune system, please don’t shake hands with others during the sign of peace. You may smile and say, “The peace of the Lord be with you.”

If Holy Communion is offered under both forms, please do not consume the Precious Blood if you are not feeling well or if you have a compromised immune system.

As you all know, praying for vocations is a great cause as we continue to need priests to fill the places of those retiring Currently, they are having a very difficult time filling the hours for this Adoration and are seeking parishioners willing to spend an hour or two whenever you can with the Lord in prayer for vocations. Please consider this ministry. It is a ministry from your heart to the hearts of people being called to religious life or the priesthood. If this is something you would like to do, please contact the Vocations Office to arrange a time. 608-821-3089
