Introduction

India is a vibrant and diverse nation with many people of different castes and religions, speaking different languages are living together in complete harmony. National unity is significant for construction of a complete nation with the aim of “One India, Excellent India” (Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat). It was aptly said by the Iron man of India Shri Vallabh Bhai Patel “Manpower without Unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly, then it becomes a spiritual power”. Good relationship among the people of the nation is a binding force that brings peace and development and also enable us to unify against various threats of enemies.

National Unity Day is an initiative celebrated every year to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. Sardar Patel was born on 31st of October in 1875 in Gujarat. He was first Home Minister and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India. He was a great social leader who worked enormously for the integration of people to make India a united and independent nation. He united 565 princely states to give India her present identity. National Unity Day initiative was introduced by the Government of India and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. In an official statement for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) by the Ministry of Home Affairs quotes that the National Unity Day “will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country”. Run for Unity is a nationwide campaign organized to celebrate this occasion which signifies peace and harmony among the fellow citizens of the country.
