INSIDE

Dear readers,

Let’s take a glimpse! This volume will not only elucidate

you different regional activities but it will also reveal that

empowering children is the best way to make difference for

future generation. This is what NRSP is doing in district Shi-

karpur in Second Shift School – ILM IDEAS Project.

“Enlightening minds, reshaping lives” is the instance when

we live in ignorance with the faith of true deeds, and never

thought that are we on the right track? This case study will

reveal us that still in present era fake attitude is restricting

girls to get education.

Three tier social mobilization programmes has been initiated

in NRSP RYK region. In this context, General Manager

NRSP especially visited RYK and participated in first com-

prehensive dialogue with community.

Let’s move to Sindh where NRSP RYK is vigorously doing

best efforts to eliminate child labour in district Sukkur in

CACL-II project. On the other hand, child protection inter-

ventions are continued in Jaccobabad, Kashmore and Shi-

karpur under PLaCES project. Women and children are pro-

vided information, services and referrals in health, nutrition,

water/sanitation, emergency education, protection and psy-

cho social counseling.

ing held on 5 March, 2013, in village Dari Azeem Khan (DAK)

of district RYK. In this meeting community resource persons from

Bahawalpur region also shared their experience and achievements

regarding local support organization (LSO). GM described the

objective of meeting and introduced NRSP programmes and ap-

proach of working with rural community. He also enlightened the

importance of linkages for COs. Afterwards, RGM-BWP illustrat-

ed the concept and function of LSO and briefed them how it even-

tually uplift the disadvantageous rural community.

The team also visited biogas plant of CO Willaya in Shahbazpur and did meeting with CO members. CO manag-

er briefed them advance techniques of sugarcane cultivation and

other achievements their CO made in agriculture sector. GM NRSP

acknowledged the progress of CO and thanked for their participa-

tion in meeting.

units staff. During the meeting RGM-RYK briefed GM about re-

gional progress and credit operations. GM highly appreciated re-

Micro Insurance: Tendering people

Nabi Buxush 47 years old is a farmer and member of CO Jam Khawand buxush. He has seven children all got

married. He used his small number of livestock as reserve source of income and to meet sudden expenses occurred

in any emergency. He was diagnosed appendix pain and had to get appendix surgery. He was operated from a pri-

vate hospital of tehsil Saidqabad. Total expenses of operation were

Rs. 22,000 which paid by sale of one buffalo and one calf. Being a

CO member he was eligible for his insurance claim.

He received his hospitalization claim Rs. 15,000 under the NRSP’s

micro insurance policy. This claim amount was utilized to meet fur-

ther expenses. Nabi buxush was very contented on receiving his

claim and said:

“Being a member of community organization I am dually secured.

First, I improved my economic status through micro credit. Second-

ly, NRSP’s micro insurance policy is playing a vital role to sensitize

us about our health. Generally in rural areas people do not take

care in treatment of diseases. Before insurance, I too was not much

conscious about my health but now I always remain conscious

about my health and go to doctor for proper medication as I know

that my insurance policy will support me in meeting expenses”.

Nabi Buxush

“……he was very contented and said that

being a member of community organization

I am dually secured.”

Enlightening minds, reshaping lives

ILM IDEAS (Second Shift Schools for Girls)

“Girls are not allowed in Islam to get education”

These words stroked our brain when men ut-

tered these words in very anger tone during

community meeting that was held to sensitize

people for the importance of girls education.

Indeed, it was first stone in the stagnant water.

After this reaction, only firm, and consistent

efforts were needed to bring a change in such

extremely wrong and oblivious minds.

There was only school for boys in Ilyas Odho, village of Shikarpur. No-

body in the village ever thought for girls’ school as each person’s brain

was sealed with wrong belief, so called cultural values & customs, and

misconception of religion.

Caring the objective of “Second Shift School for Girls” project, the team

of ILM IDEAS started triggering local community for the importance of

education and realizing them true meaning of Islam. In the community

broad based meetings, parents were educated and sensitized the pure

spirit of religion ‘Islam’ regarding education by quoting the verses from

Holy Quran and Hadith by Prophet (PBUH).

Parents who earlier believe that education is not for girls, enrolled their

fifteen years old daughter and two nine years old daughters in class one at

second shift school of Govt. Boys Primary School Ilyas Odho.

These girls come to school in complete veil and their parents have real-

ized that there is no racial discrimination and no restriction of age, sex,

and creed for getting education, Islam opens the doors for all. They sup-

port them and their daughters go to school regularly with full of confi-

dence and enthusiasm. Their participation in the class is quite active and

remarkable.

ILM IDEAS: Teachers Training

With Due Respect

Apart from project core activities, recreational activities for flood

affected families are also part of PLaCES. The basic idea is to

disseminate the message of child protection and disaster risk re-

duction in more friendly way that can easily understandable for

children and women.

On 13-14 March, a children festival under the PLaCES project

was celebrated in villages Dostabad and Gindal Burrio of Shi-

karpur district. The participants belonged to static and mobile

places. It was also ensured that children and women from both

PLaCES and from surrounding PLaCES may reach at the event

venue and can easily participate in the event.

The event was comprised of multi flavored components like naat

and speech competition, tableaus, skits, singing and games. The

objective of this festival was to facilitate children & women of

flood affected areas and to engage them in recreational activities

so that they can re-establish their motives of life and turn towards

life with full zeal. Children warmly participated in different activ-

ities and enjoyed the event with full excitement. At the end of

ceremony, winning participants received their prizes.

Protective Learning and Community Emergency Services (PLaCES)

PPAF Phase XVI: Agriculture Irrigation NRPS with the coordination of PPAF continued its

journey of development for the deprived rural com-

munity. CO Maitla received turbine in PPAF phase

XVI. Total installation cost of turbine was Rs.

802,455 that is further bifurcated in 65% PPAF and

35% community share. High inflation and increasing

domestic needs never allowed them to plan such type

of grand initiative on their own.

Before turbine few members had their own tubewell but the cost of

irrigation for one hour was excessively high. As one hour of irriga-

tion from tubewell consumed four litter diesel cost Rs. 455. Now

they have cost effective irrigation system, from turbine one member

consumes on average 16 electricity units and he has to pay Rs. 160

only for one hour.

The CO has devised proper record keeping system. CO manager

notes meter reading after each turn of CO member consumption and

charges are noted accordingly. Electricity bill is divided to all the members as per their total units con-

sumption.

Appreciation of Print Media on Tool Kits Distribution Ceremony (CACL-II )

NRSP has organized six ceremonies regarding distribution of tool kits to vocational training graduates (boys,

girls and mothers). In this context, Sukkur print media warmly acknowledged CACL-II project team efforts in

elimination of child labour with sustainable approach.

Sustainable Improvements in Life

Combating Abusive Child Labour - II (CACL-

Formation of mother groups is one of

core interventions of CACL-II in which

they are provided vocational trainings,

health services and linked to social safety

nets and microfinance institutions (MFIs).

40 Years old Azra Majeed, mother of two

daughters and three Sons, became mem-

ber of mother group. Her Husband Abdul

Majeed worked in a small factory. In or-

der to meet the family needs, she started a

small “Tuck Shop” of toffees, biscuits,

chips at her home.

But this effort was not ample to send her

children school. This situation compelled

her to send her six years old daughter Faiza Kanwal to domestic work against Rs. 150

monthly wages. In the mean while, CACL-II project team met Faiza’s mother and in-

formed her about harmful effects of worst form of child labour (WFCL) and told her

that her daughter was also victim of WFCL. After extensive social mobilization efforts

she agreed to withdraw her daughter from domestic work and enrolled her in NRSP’s

established non-formal education (NFE) cen- ter.

After receiving community management skill training and business management skill

training, Azra took loan Rs. 10,000 from MFI and expanded her tuck shop to general

store. Now her monthly income is Rs. 25,000. Her husband has left his job and became

helping hand of her. Faiza is currently study- ing in School in class two.

How does it feel when

this innocent 6 years

old Faiza had to do

domestic labour work

instead having fun

with her siblings and

friends and spend her

time in school”

Now Faiza is

enrolled in school

But still many

children are waiting

to go school

Think and take

action against child

labour
