Workshop Expectations & Goals

• Focus on Energy Storage with Grid applications• Do not focus on mobile applications, but CO2 mitigation can be included, if applicable

• Identifying R&D opportunities to be reported to Mexican Energy Department and National Research Council • The Department would eventually develop proposals in the first quarter of next year.

• Each Working Group to identify and document the opportunities• Stakeholders with an international perspective

• NRC published a call for R&D proposals for flow batteries, grid scale and fuel cells. Opinion or comments on Policies and human resources (training).

• Comment on how the project would create advanced degree (Masters/PhD), specialized training and technical subjects for students

• Final report will be concise, graphical and ideal for its ample distribution to SENER, academy, research centers and electrical industry

Where does H2 fit?

• Hydrogen goes beyond electrons to electrons; value-added sink for electrons rather than a capacitor

• Making fair comparisons is difficult, so many peripheral impacts.

P2G: H2 + CO2 + Biology → ProductsProject Summary (NREL/SoCal Gas)

• Generate hydrogen (H2) using inexpensive renewable electricity via water electrolysis

• Combine CO2 and H2 in 20 ft. tall bioreactor where organisms produce methane

Project Objectives

• Generate pipeline quality renewable natural gas as energy storage to enable higher penetrations of renewable electricity

• Demonstrate daily operation under varying hydrogen production via solar PV profile

• Validate overall system efficiency and costs from PV to H2 to CH4 to H2 to Electricity

How do we describe and show value of H2?

• Can we assume a future with 1-2 cents per kWh?

• Everyone asks about electrolyzer, FC and round-trip efficiency• LHV (33.3 kWh/kg)?• HHV (39.4 kWh/kg)?• Or simply 50 - 55 kWh/kg for large-scale (MW) electrolyzer systems?• For example, 50% (LHV) efficient fuel cells return 16 kWh/kg H2

• Hydrogen in terms of other products and applications?• Beyond electrons-to-electrons • Renewable natural gas, ammonia, synthetic fuels and carbon-based products

• How do describe and demonstrate value added?

Questions to Consider

• What benefits can hydrogen bring to the Mexican electricity infrastructure?

• What opportunities does hydrogen represent for the Mexican energy sector?

• What are the knowledge gaps for Mexico concerning hydrogen technologies developed in other regions?

Summary of Conclusions

• Hydrogen production, compression, storage and multiple end-use applications are well known and established (TRL9), but costs remain high
