Rock Art • Rock art in an important historic and scientific record of human

occupation of the region. • Traditionally, paint was made from natural minerals and mixed with

water or sometimes animal fat. The colours most commonly used were red, yellow, orange, white, grey and black. • It is important to conserve the rock art as they can be easily damaged.

Natural things like water and rock minerals make them fade or flake off. They can also be damaged with people touch the artwork or graffiti the sites. • It is important that to look after the rock art by photographing rather

than touching them.

Your Task…

• Create your own Indigenous artwork on a piece of A3 paper. • Make sure you include symbols that we have spoken about e.g. the ‘U’ shape

and the swirl.• What are some other Indigenous painting techniques or symbols that we

already know about? E.g. the sun, animals, dot painting. • Using what you already know about Indigenous painting techniques and

symbols and what you have learnt today, create your own painting of Uluru. • Make sure you use pencil first to outline your artwork and write your name

on the back. • You may reflect on the following slides as examples of traditional art and use

them to motivate your own artwork.
