2 15th Annual National Oral History Conference | 9–12 October 2018 | Milnerton Library

Welcome message by the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture

ItisthattimeagainwhereinOralHistorypractitionersaregatheredtoreflectonthe

past twelve months since our last conference and charter the way forward to the

next. Again this year as last year wherein we celebrated the centenary of

OR Tambo, we are celebrating the centenaries of two of our struggle for liberation

and democracy stalwarts former President Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.

We gather under the theme Freedom and Egalitarianism: Nelson Mandela, the symbol

of democracy.

The Ministry and the Department of Arts and Culture are looking forward to over the

next three days to drink from the fountains of both the practitioners and learners

gathered here as they narrate and unearth the buried histories of these stalwarts

and other valuable information according to the sub-themes. We are hopeful as

the Ministry and Department that the presentations that have been chosen to be

presented over the conference duration will contribute immensely and enrich our

National Archival records on our struggle for democracy and other chosen topics.

We also acknowledge the partnerships with other sister Departments including the

HostingProvincethatconfirmthestrengthofintergovernmentalrelationsinserving

our people. On behalf of the Ministry and Department I wish the OHASA council and

delegates a fruitful conference.

Makhotso Maggie SotyuDeputy Minister of Arts and Culture

315th Annual National Oral History Conference | 9–12 October 2018 | Milnerton Library

Welcome message by the Deputy Minister of Basic Education

It is an exciting time when as a country we are taking an in-depth look at our own

history and its importance to us as a people, a nation and as Africans in general.

For too long, most of our own history has been cast aside and we were made to

believe that African history began when colonists arrived on the continent.

We are making concerted and deliberate strides to rewrite this history and in so

doing re-invigorate our pride as Africans through social cohesion and by knowing

where we come from.

This Oral History Conference compliments our own efforts in the basic eduction

sector towards making History a compulsory subject for learners in schools. We have

recently received the Ministerial Task Team report into making history compulsory

for all learners, the report’s recommendations speak to the importance of history as a

subject to promote nation building, social cohesion and national reconciliation.

I support this very important conference as this is another important step forward

indefiningourselvesasanationthroughourknowledgeandunderstandingofour

history.

Thank you.

Enver SurtyDeputy Minister of Basic Education

4 15th Annual National Oral History Conference | 9–12 October 2018 | Milnerton Library

Welcome message by the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport

Much of the history of our communities is preserved only in the minds of their

storytellers. To truly understand our past from a unique perspective, it is important

to drive a formal programme to capture the valuable stories beneath our social

tapestry. Through Oral History projects, personal histories and community

experiences become shared heritage while promoting social inclusivity and

community development through sharing and understanding. With this mutual goal

in mind, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 15th Oral History Conference in

our picturesque Mother City in the Western Cape province.

I trust this conference will afford the opportunity to share experiences, models and

ideastofurtherexplorethebenefitsandchallengesofsharingpersonalstoriesand

documenting Oral Histories. I also encourage all to enjoy your stay and that you will

take some time to experience our cultural blend, our breath-taking scenery and truly

submerse yourself into this unique diversity we call home.

515th Annual National Oral History Conference | 9–12 October 2018 | Milnerton Library

Welcome message by the President of OHASA

This year, OHASA, in partnership with the National Archives and the Western Cape’s

Provincial Archives, is organizing its 15th annual Oral History Conference.

This year’s conference is extra special, because it will be held during the centenary

year of our two most revered icons: former president Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela and

Mrs Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu. This is a great honour, indeed! In celebrating the

sacrifices,dedicationandcommitmentthetwoleadershavemadetorealizeafree,

non-sexist and non-racial democratic South Africa, I would like to commend the

OHASA Exco and the Western Cape’s LOC for an aptly themed conference.

To all the presenters, both novices and established, and everyone who will be

participating in the conference in various forms, I would like to wish you a memorable

and successful conference.
