Organisational background:National Museums Northern Ireland was established by the National Museums & Galleries (NI) Order 1998, and comprises the Ulster Museum, Ulster Folk Museum, Ulster Transport Museum and Ulster American Folk Park. Between them, the National Museums group is the largest visitor attraction in Northern Ireland and makes a significant contribution to cultural tourism.

The organisation receives its core funding from the Department for Communities (DfC), but generates income and sponsorship from a variety of other sources to meet its revenue and capital expenditure needs.

Overall purpose of job:To deliver the learning and engagement activities as defined in the National Lottery Heritage Fund Learning Plan. The role holder will develop and deliver artist-led creative workshops with community partners, organise training programmes for volunteers, create a series of co-produced digital resources for schools and for community learning, and develop and deliver educational sessions to higher education students.

This job is part of “Unlocking Our Sound Heritage”, an ambitious project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and lead by the British Library in conjunction with national and regional partners across the UK.

Unlocking Our Sound Heritage will digitally preserve almost half a million endangered sound recordings from across the UK and make 100,000 available online, transforming the visibility of sound archive collections in the process.

National Museums NI will be the hub for Northern Ireland. Over three years we will digitise 5,000 physical Page 2 of 20

sound items, from our own collections, and from other collections within our area. The digitised material will then be used as part of a learning and outreach activity for the benefit of the people of Northern Ireland.

The activities which the post holder will be expected to perform will include the following:

Duties and Responsibilities Develop and deliver artist-led creative workshops which explore the sound recordings being

digitally preserved as part of the project with a range of community partners. Create a series of co-produced digital resources for schools and for community learning, including

a pack with selections of sound collections relating to heritage of the island of Ireland and a teachers’ resource which will provide specific guidance to tie in with the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

Develop and deliver educational sessions to higher education students who are studying in museums, libraries and archives courses on the theme of using audio archives as part of public programmes and exhibitions.

Organise training programmes for volunteers to help support listening to and selecting materials, testing and evaluating content as part of sessions.

Resources Managed Responsible for overseeing the learning and engagement activities of the project, facilitators and

volunteers.

Main Tasks Develop a good understanding of the sound recordings being digitally preserved as part of the

project with a view to incorporating these into the learning and engagement activities as defined in the National Lottery Heritage Fund Learning Plan.

Commission artists, facilitators and/or content producers as appropriate and work with them to deliver high quality learning and engagement outputs.

Identify and recruit participants to engage with relevant activities (e.g. community partners for the artist-led creative workshops, teachers for the co-production of digital resources).

Work with teachers, learners and educators to select and interpret collections around suitable themes, and to develop and test educational content.

Ensure that all necessary logistical planning for workshops, training programmes, educational sessions and any associated public/celebration events is undertaken to a high standard (including booking rooms, materials, refreshments).

Oversee the adminstration of participants’ T&S claims. Work with colleagues within National Museums NI to actively market and promote the learning

and engagement outputs of the project. Work with volunteers to deliver the learning and engagement activities as defined in the National

Lottery Heritage Fund Learning Plan. Ensure that risk assessments are undertaken in a timely and thorough manner. Carry out evaluation as required, recording participant feedback and using the lessons learned to

inform the development of future activities. Liaise with British Library and Project Partners as required. Demonstrate a willingness to take on a range of tasks and to develop new skills as appropriate, to

support the delivery of the Project as required by line management. Any other duties appropriate to the grade and project.

Essential Shortlisting Criteria

1. Educated to degree level or equivalent plus one year’s experience working in a similar role OR in

the absence of a degree, two years’ experience working in a similar role.

2. Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering learning programmes for a wide range of

audiences.

3. Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

4. Experience of delivering project evaluation and using it to inform project development

5. Strong organisational, planning and project management skills

6. Good working knowledge of MS Office and Social Media.

7. Good verbal and written communication skills.

8. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

9. Proven ability to manage projects with conflicting priorities ensuring that identified deadlines are

met.

Access to an appropriate form of transport and a willingness to travel in order to fulfil the requirements of this post.

General terms and conditions of employment

Hours and Attendance This is a part time post and the successful candidate will be expected to work 2 days per week.

Salary The post is graded on the EOI salary scale currently £26,962 - £27,819 pro-rata per annum. The starting salary is normally the minimum of the pay scale.

Pension Staff are eligible for membership of the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme. Further details of the terms and entitlements under this scheme will be made available upon commencement of employment.

Annual Leave The annual leave entitlement will be 25 days, rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service plus 12 bank / public holidays. This entitlement is pro-rata for part time staff.
