THE EAGLE SOARING ABOVE THE COMMONS Her name is Liberty Soaring high above the staircase this regal eagle made of stained glass has a home against the bright window wall of the Carl Sandburg Commons Liberty is the brainchild of Sandburg English teacher Lainee McGraw Lainee designed and made Liberty in a process that took approximately three years from conception to flight This beautiful work of art took McGraw well over 100 hours to complete Liberty consists of over 282 pieces of carefully chosen and meticulously placed pieces of glass McGraw has been working in the art of stained glass-making for over thirty years ldquoI find such beauty in glass and am often overwhelmed by the magic of sunshine gleaming through a finished piece of glassrdquo

Stained glass art is a complex process with many painstaking steps This process entails many fine adjustments to a design to enhance the overall look of the design and to build in the stability needed to hold larger pieces together First the artist has to create a design that will lend itself to the glass making process The artist cuts the paper design into the many small pieces that will make up the piece and then glues the pieces to sheets of glass It is at this stage that McGraw looks for patterns in the glass that will create specific hues lines tints swirls and flaws Once the pattern pieces are glued to the glass a hand held glass cutter is used to cut out each piece of glass Next a glass grinder with a diamond tip is used to grind all the edges of the glass pieces so that they match the pattern lines exactly Each piece then goes through a cleaning process to prepare them for foiling Foiling is a step in the glassmaking process that uses copper foil to ready the pieces for soldering Finally the whole piece is assembled and the artist solders both sides of the piece and attaches stabilization bars ldquoEvery piece takes on a personality of its own and I love the finished product It gives me a sense of accomplishment and a pride in the beauty when the sun blazes through the window and brings the glass to liferdquo

The Sandburg community also helped in this stunning stained glass piece The attractive wood frame that encases Liberty was designed by Mark Diorio The handmade frame was designed to strengthen and support the heavy glass work Markrsquos father Mast Artist Tony Diorio also helped by designing the support necessary for the glass piece The support is important to keep the weight of suspended glass from pulling the work apart

ldquoI have always admired the beauty and majesty of eagles and I am so proud to be a Sandburg Eagle This project allowed me to combine my awe of eagles with the beauty of glass I hope Liberty inspires others to try stained glass and I hope Liberty inspires all Sandburg Eagles to soar aboverdquo

Notes From The Social orkers amp School Psychologist ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex condition characterized by symptoms of inattention impulsivity and hyperactivity While all students experience difficulties at times with concentrating sitting still and acting before thinking those with ADHD experience such symptoms much more often and to a greater degree than others their same age In addition such symptoms often tend to interfere with their functioning at school at home and in friendships Estimates from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that 5 to 11 of children between the ages 4 to 17 have ADHD ADHD is often first identified in school-aged children and symptoms may be seen as early as preschool Children with ADHD do not just grow out of these behaviors and while the presentation of symptoms may change

over the years difficulties continue to be experienced through adolescence and into adulthood

Although there is no cure for ADHD a variety of options are available to help reduce symptoms and improve functioning These options include counseling education or training medication or a combination of treatments The National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) also provides a number of strategies that parents can use to help their child manage symptoms of ADHD and be successful One such strategy is keeping a routine and schedule Try to keep the same routine every day and make sure to include time for homework and downtime Keep this schedule posted in a visible spot such as on the refrigerator and write changes on the schedule as far in advance as possible Another strategy is to organize everyday

items Have a designated spot for items like clothing school supplies and backpack and make sure to keep everything in its place Along with this help your child come up with a system for managing homework notes and papers If the traditional assignment notebook has not been successful in the past explore the use of apps The Homework App myHomework Class Timetable Evernote and Documents To Go are just some of the many available options You can also make use of the Reminders and Calendar features available on most smartphones In addition to these strategies remember to be clear and consistent This will help make rules easy to understand and follow Lastly remember to look for good behavior and praise it If you have specific concerns regarding your child feel free to contact hisher guidance counselor

CARL SANDBURG HIGH SCHOOL

We are still looking for donations of food and prizes for the many activities the students will be participating in the night of the party If anyone would like to make a food prize cash or in-kind donation please contact Gina Pelegrino at sandburgseniorpartygmailcom
