students qualified to participate in the Regional Science Fair which will be held

STOMACH FLU

Parents, please be advised that we have had cases of stomach flu occurring in

several grades. It has not been a large amount of students, but certainly enough to

make you aware. These cases may or may not be caused by the Norovirus, as the

stomach flu can be caused by a number of different viruses. Symptoms are all or

some of the following: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, dizziness,

lethargy. If your child displays any of these symptoms, please keep them home.

The stomach flu is highly contagious and can last from 3-5 days. Please keep your

child home until all symptoms have subsided for at least 24 hours. If you have any

questions, please contact your child’s pediatrician. Martina Lang, RN

treasures will be on display through February 10 in the Bartz Hall lobby. Please

Youth Chorale

We had good rehearsals this week. The singers are really starting to

zone in on their pieces and are working so hard. Our first

performance this year will be in chapel on February 22nd

. Hope to see

you there!

General Music

We had a practice day this week so that the students could get ready

for their playing quiz next week. The students worked on Rocky

Mountain High.

The 5th grade band students are working hard in preparing for the

Solo & Ensemble Contest on February 11, 2017. This gives our band

students the opportunity to participate in the Illinois Grade School

Music Association. Students are judged on their Solo performance

and receive appropriate recognition. In past years St. Peter has done

very well when compared to students in similar grades. Go Saints!

St. Peter will host a jazz band clinic on February 16, 2017. Our

students will get the chance again this year to play alongside adult

jazz musicians and teachers who share the love of Jazz music.

Parents and other band students are welcome as well to listen in at

7pm in the band room.

Finally, the Saint’s Shootout will feature the entire St. Peter Band

program playing the Star Spangled Banner as well as various Pep

Band tunes to cheer on our Basketball team and to bolster our school

spirit. Star Spangled Banner is at 7pm. Students will arrive at 6:15pm

in the balcony.

Science in the News…

Did you know… A new near-Earth object (NEO), dubbed asteroid

2017 BX, discovered a few days ago on Friday, January 20 will swing by

Earth Tuesday night at 11:54 p.m. ET at a distance of about 162,000

miles (261,000 kilometers) — roughly two-thirds the way to the

moon. This is the second asteroid to pass between Earth and the moon

in the past three weeks. While the size of a large car or bus, it is too

small and too slow-moving to pose any real harm to the Earth.

6th Grade

We are finishing our unit on the solar system and will be testing next

Thursday. We ended this unit learning about comets, asteroids, and

meteors.

7th Grade

We began our unit on Genetics this week by doing an activity on

dominant and recessive characteristics/traits. We will be studying in

this unit the people and major concepts involved in the study of

heredity and the factors that affect the passing of traits from parents to

their offspring.

8th Grade

We tested over our atom and the Periodic Table unit this week and will

be building on what we learned this unit in the next chapter by learning

how to write chemical formulas and equations. In addition to learning

how to balance chemical equations, we will also study the types of

bonds that elements form in compounds. Our first round of D-Day

Demonstrations are scheduled for next week Friday. We will also be

participating in a You Be The Chemist Challenge activity in the next few

days. This will determine the students from our school that will

compete in the You Be The Chemist Challenge competition the

beginning of March. Our school has participated in this challenge for

the past eight years.
