Ignition

3. Insert the Under-The-Window tool into the door andmaneuver it into position. Pull out on the handle ortoggle the door lock button to unlock.

4. As stated previously, the ignition lock on the LS isthe very same ignition used by the short-lived 1997through 1998 Mark VIII. STRATTEC is currently theonly manufacturer of this lock, using part number703596. The key, STRATTEC 599902 (LockmastersLKMH74PT), is also unique to this car; using anencrypted Texas Instrument transponder chip and theFord 8-Cut keyway.

5. Although this particularkey looks very similar tothe more commonSTRATTEC 598333(Lockmasters LKMH72PT)Ford transponder key, they cannot beinterchanged. To helpdistinguish these keysapart, the LS key blankprovided as both theoriginal key and theSTRATTEC key will have atwo-digit marking - aletter followed by anumber - on the blade ofthe key, and thetransponder cap or coverwill be gray in color.

6. The ignition lock on the LS is found on the dash. Removing the ignition lock on the LS is quite simpleand does not require any column disassembly.

7. Begin by carefully prying up and removing the trimplate surrounding the ignition lock.

8. The plate is held to the dash using a couple of clips.Be careful not to break these clips.

9. The transceiver ring for the transponder securitysystem is fully exposed at the front of the lock, andalthough not readily apparent, the lock’s retainer isnow accessible.

10 To release and remove the lock, insert a workingkey, pick or drill and turn the lock to the ON or RUNposition.

11. Locate and depress the retainer.

12. The retainer is located at the 6 o’clock position, about 1-1/2” back from the face of the lock.

13. Use a right angle scratch awl to depress the lock’sretainer and remove the lock.

Door Lock

14. The removed lock.

15. A door lock is present on the driver’s door only.

16. Despite first appearances, the door lock is fastenedbehind the handle and is not part of the handle.

17. Fortunately, door panel removal is extremelysimple on the LS.

6 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association

18. Begin door panel removal by first lifting the smalltrim cover that hides two screws in the cup of thearmrest.

19. Gently pry the window control button panel upfrom the front and lift it out of the armrest.

20. Disconnect the connector from the bottom of thepanel and set aside.

21. Now remove the inside handle trim.

National Locksmith Automobile Association Issue No. 33 • 7

24. Remove the rest of the screws that can be foundaround the perimeter of the panel.

22. Carefully pry the trim from the front edge and slideit away from the handle.

23. With the trim piece removed, a small screw isvisible. Remove the screw.

25. Three of these screws can be found along thebottom of the panel.

8 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association

26. Once complete, pry the doorpanel off of the door.

27. Plastic clips hold the door panel in place, and it may need a little coaxing. Be careful not

to break the clips or the clip holders

28. Once the panel is loose from the door, carefully remove the various electricalconnectors. Two can be found up near theside door handle area.

10 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association

31. A black vapor barrier is fastened to the door.

29. An interior floor light can be found near thebottom left of the panel. The harness for thislight connector includes several strain reliefclips.

30. Remove these clips before disconnectingthe light. Set the door panel aside.

National Locksmith Automobile Association Issue No. 33 • 11

32. Pull down the corner of the barrier, beingcareful not to tear it. The door lock is now

accessible.

33. Viewing inside the door, a black plasticshroud covers the door lock and door locklinkage.

34. Use a 12mm socket to remove the upper nutholding the shroud to the back of the door lock.

12 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association

35. There is no need to completely remove theshroud. With the nut removed, the shroud can bemove out of the way of the lock.

36. With the shroud removed, the latch and lock rodsare easily visible.

37. A small white nylon retaining strap is seen aroundthe outside latch release rod. If removing the entirelock handle, be careful not to damage this part, andwhen replacing the handle, make sure to pass thelatch rod back through the strap.

National Locksmith Automobile Association Issue No. 33 • 13

38. With the shroud removed, the lock is easilyaccessed. Another 12mm bolt holds the lock to thehandle. Use a socket to remove the nut.

39. Pull the lock out of the handle and gently slidethe pawl off of the lock rod.

40. The lock is now easily serviced.

43. The trunk or deck lock on the 2002 LS is fairlysimple to remove and service.

41. All the tumblers can be seen through the weephole on the bottom of the lock.

42. The lock also serves to hold the frontportion of the outside handle to the door.

Trunk Lock

National Locksmith Automobile Association Issue No. 33 • 15

44. Unlike many Ford vehicles, the deck lock, although part of the deck lid, is not hiddenbehind trim or light panel.

46. With the deck lid open, carefully pull down theinside felt trim panel.

45. Hitting the trunk release button found onthe instrument panel near the driver’s left

knee, easily opens the trunk.

47. The panel is held on using several plastic trimretainers.

16 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association

48. With the trim removed, the lock is easyto access. Worth noting is that the lockreleases the deck latch via cable and notthe typical lock rod or shaft.

49. Two 12mm nuts hold the lockto the deck lid.

50. Use a socket to remove the nutsand then the lock.

51. Like the door lock, the tumblers within thelock can be seen through the weep hole on the

bottom of the lock.
