To go along with the advertised meat for the grill, this week's ads also featured sweet corn, bell peppers, squash, and tomatoes. Grapes, melons, stone fruit, and berries were promoted for a sweet finish to the meal. Floral departments were also on theme with colorful floral arrangements sharing space with more fall-like offerings of potted mums and even a few early pumpkins. Total ad numbers this week were 319,265, a 1% increase from last week's 316,006. Ad numbers this week were 2% lower than for the same week last year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 179,778 (56% of all ads), onions and potatoes 23,938 (7%), vegetables 111,953 (35%), herbs 426, ornamentals 1217, and hemp 1953. The number of ads for organic produce was 50,029, 16% of total ads. The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included Bartlett pears at 23%, cantaloupes at 22%, white grapes at 17%, pint blueberries at 16%, half gallon apple juice at 15%, black seedless grapes at 14%, and red seedless grapes at 10%. Significant decreases included only blackberries at 16%. The only significant increase for onions and potatoes was sweet yellow onions at 10%; there were no significant decreases this week. Significant increases in vegetable prices this week included 10-12 oz packaged salad at 10%. Significant decreases included tomatoes on the vine at 10%. Advertised Prices for Specialty Crops at Major Retail Supermarket Outlets ending during the period of 08/28 to 09/081,2

Summer's Unofficial End

For the upcoming holiday weekend, retailers this week made sure to feature plenty of summer favorites for customers to choose from. To go along with the advertised meat for the grill, this week's ads also featured sweet corn, bell peppers, squash, and tomatoes. Grapes, melons, stone fruit, and berries were promoted for a sweet finish to the meal. Floral departments were also on theme with colorful floral arrangements sharing space with more fall-like offerings of potted mums and even a few early pumpkins.

Total ad numbers this week were 319,265, a 1% increase from last week's 316,006. Ad numbers this week were 2% lower than for the same week last year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 179,778 (56% of all ads), onions and potatoes 23,938 (7%), vegetables 111,953 (35%), herbs 426, ornamentals 1217, and hemp 1953.
