The National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project is a nonprofit education association with 28 years of experience in energy education and curriculum development. NEED’s materials and programs are an integral part of the energy education process in 65,000 classrooms nationwide. NEED works with the education community and the energy industry to design and distribute comprehensive, objective, hands-on, inquiry-based educational materials. NEED conducts student and teacher training programs, provides evaluation tools, and recognizes outstanding student and teacher achievement for grades K-12. NEED materials are designed to meet the diverse needs and learning styles of students. They are teacher-tested to ensure success in the classroom and are correlated to the National Science Education Content Standards and to state standards.
The Energy Conferences The 2008 Energy Conferences for Educators are not for the faint-hearted. In four activity-packed days, the conferences provide teachers with the most up-to-date information on all aspects of energy, including the science of energy, sources of energy, transportation, consumption, electricity, efficiency, and environmental and economic impacts. Conference participants receive the training and materials to implement innovative hands-on energy units for their classrooms, multi-disciplinary teams, and after-school programs. They also receive the materials, training, and support to conduct in-services in their areas to introduce the NEED program to others. NEED leaders at the conferences help participants develop specialized units that meet state standards and can be utilized with students of all learning styles. Teachers interested in receiving graduate credit can apply for three credits from Virginia Commonwealth University for a fee of $425. Coursework requires completion of a paper and implementation of an energy education curriculum.
“The materials are prepackaged for me, and I don’t have to dig for stuff. It gets the kids’ motors running and turned on to science.” Denver 2006 participant
“It fits BEAUTIFULLY with my AP Environmental Science curriculum.” California 2005 participant
“Teachers are treated as professionals at NEED.” Boston 2006 Participant
“The best and most useful conference I have ever been to.” Auto technology teacher
“I plan to revolve my entire curriculum around the NEED program.” Seattle 2006 participant
“Sponsoring a teacher to a NEED conference is a way for us to invest in our community and make an investment in education, too.” Houston organization sponsoring ten teachers

You NEED to know . . . • NEED materials and training are
compatible with many different teaching and learning styles and are easily incorporated into existing curricula in science, language arts, math, technology, and social studies.
• The conferences are designed not only to educate teachers, but also to prepare them to implement energy units in a variety of educational settings. Many activities are content based; others focus on process skills.
• NEED provides the follow-up communication and program support that educators need and appreciate.
• The conferences are energy and time intensive––filled with hands-on explorations and professional collaboration at specific grade-levels.
• NEED works with teachers and school districts to customize programs for specific grades and disciplines.
• Energy professionals are welcome to attend––to enhance classroom outreach activities, gather new materials to use in community programs or to increase their energy knowledge.

The energy industry requires many qualified employees to meet the demands of a growing industry. Supporting the involvement of teachers and students in energy education is an investment in the future of energy. For partners in the energy industry, many sponsorship opportunities are available––sponsoring meals, providing speakers, and contributing to the cur-riculum materials the teachers use in their classrooms. There are many ways to make an investment in energy education. A list of 2007 sponsors is on the back of this brochure. If you or your company are interested in sponsoring one or more teachers to the 2008 conferences, please contact Rebecca Lamb at 1-800-875-5029 or email at [email protected].
The $1,100 registration fee covers most meals, lodging (double occupancy), airport transportation or parking, and classroom and conference materials. Single room surcharge is $350.00. Travel is not included in the registration fee, but reasonable air rates are available to each conference city. Because the conference agenda is activity-filled, participants wishing to tour the local area should plan to arrive early or extend their stay. Anyone wishing to do so will be offered the conference room rate whenever possible and will be
responsible for transportation to and from the airport.
NEED works with its partners in the
energy industry and in state and federal agencies to sponsor the registration fees and travel expenses for teachers whose school districts are unable to cover the costs. Teachers should work with their school districts to find funding, but
if district support is unavailable, please indicate your need for
sponsorship on your registration form. NEED will try to connect you with
available sponsors.
The mission of the NEED Project is to promote an energy conscious and educated society by creating effective networks of students, educators, business, government and community
leaders to design and deliver objective, multi-sided energy education programs.
