• original Czech ball game with more than a hundred years of tradition

• primarily outdoor game, but in winter it plays in sport halls too

• special form of handball with original rules

• today is played only in the territory of CzechRepublic, but she was at the birth and formation ofrules for international, Olympic handball




• two teams of seven players

• player positions are called: goalkeeper (1), defender (1), halfback (2), forward (3)

• each player position is allowed a specific range ofmotion on the field

• shooting on the goal is made in front of the goal area (6 m) – leaning out or jumping is possible, but the fall has to be outside the goal area




• size of the field is 45 × 30 meters

• the field is divided into three areas: defence, middle and offense third




• the player cannot hold the ball longer than two second, he can throw the ball upon the head or bounce ball back off ground

• size of the goal: height 240 cm, width 200 cm




• National handball is first mentioned by Vaclav Karas, a teacher a Prague, in a sports journal in Brno in 1905

• thanks to other teacher Mr. Kristof, the first Czech handball association was established (in Prague) and the rules were made public

• students from Russia and Yugoslavia, who had become acquainted with Czech handball in Prague, brought this sport back to their own countries. In Yugoslavia, the sport expanded fast and became very popular

• Czech teachers taught Czech handball in Russian middle schools and there was a competition with 14 teams inCharkov in 1915




• in 1921, the Czechoslovakian Association of Handball and Women's Sports became a member of theInternational Women´s Sports Federation

• in this federation, the rules of National handball were made official

• the first women's National handball world cup was organised in 1930. Czechoslovakians won this competition, Yugoslavia came in second, and Poland was third.

• Since 1941, a men's and women's 1st league have been competing, there is also the 2nd league and regional championships




• National handball became very popular during the Germanoccupation of Czechoslovakia in second World War. The sport was originally Czech, so most people understood its play as a show of patriotism

• In 1940, there were 25,884 players in the Protectorate ofBohemia and Moravia

• In 1947, the International Handball Federation promoted the expansion of the related sport of team handball, but no further foreign countries would adopt National handball

• In 1954, there were 26,125 registered players in 447 clubs, the largest number of registered player to date

• then there was a retreat from fame especially due to massive expansion of International Handball




• In 2014, there were ca. 7,500 registered players in 65 clubs




• men´s and women´s competitions are played in five agecategories:– mini pupils – younger than 9 years

– younger pupils – 9 to 12 years

– older pupils – 13 to 15 years

– juniors – 16 to 18 years

– seniors – older than 18 years

• all youth categories play a regional long-term competition that culminating in a national championship

• seniors play a national league – current champion of CzechRepublic in women is Sokol Dobruška, in men TJ Pilsen




• regularly every year is top events in National Handball a prestige match Bohemia vs. Moravia




• Czech Union of National Handball in present form was establishedin 1990

• our Union is non-political, voluntary association of individuals andclubs

• Union headquarters is in Prag

• Union is governed by the nine-member executive committeeheaded by the chairman

• territorially is Union divided into six areas with autonomouspowers on its territory

• our Union is a full member of Czech Union of Sport

• we strive for recognition by the Czech Olympic

Committee




• Goals of our Union:– maintenance and development of our traditional sport

– defending of the interests of our members

– organizing of regular competitions in the National Handball

– support of youth sports, organizing of annual training camps forjuniors and pupils
