KM and knowledge networking are cornerstones to fulfil the obligations of GRS as a TSO for RB and as a leading scientific nuclear research institution
This is expresses in the GRS mission statement, objective and strategies: “Making available and further developing scientific knowledge and methods to protect people and environment from dangers and risks of technical facilities”
KM become part of the work processes on a daily basis. For this purpose an information, knowledge and collaboration system (platform) was put in place to collect and made easier accessible resources dispersed in a wide variety of file-shares, databases and web-based storages
By using KM GRS is maintaining and further developing its technical competence with regard to:
• The state of the art in science and technology
• Knowledge oriented planning and implementation of projects
• Distribution and sharing of knowledge,
• Utilization of knowledge
As a project-oriented institution, GRS implements process-based KM to capture knowledge were it is being produced, e.g. in all core processes

KM and knowledge networking are increasingly becoming cornerstones to fulfil the objectives of GRS as a TSO for RB
For GRS this is expresses in its mission statement: “Making available and further developing scientific knowledge and methods to protect people and environment from dangers and risks of technical facilities”
KM become part of the work processes on a daily basis. For this purpose an information, knowledge and collaboration system (platform) was put in place to collect and made easier accessible resources dispersed in a wide variety of file-shares, databases and web-based storages
By using KM the GRS is maintaining and further developing its technical competence with regard to:
• The state of the art in science and technology;
• Knowledge oriented planning and implementation of projects;

knowledge were it is being produced, e.g. in all core processes
GRS Portal - Main platform to support internal KM
4th ASEM Workshop, October, Madrid, Spain 7
Intranet portal
-> Provides browser-based access to all information and knowledge sources available for GRS
-> Supports a Document Management function covering topical themes such as QM, OrgHB and many more
-> Supports a Collaboration function through team-sites accessible to everybody or to close circles in departments, projects, management & working groups and over particular areas (e.g. emergency center)
GRS Portal: Important benefits
4th ASEM Workshop, October, Madrid, Spain 8
Central access point to all documents, information and knowledge
• Realized web-based with MS Sharepoint Portal
o Document Management
o Collaboration
Document Management System (DMS)
• Build a “Corporate Memory”
• DMS features include checkIn/checkOut, versioning, metadata (document profile data) ...
Extensive search facility
• All portal content
• Crawling and indexing of external sources, mostly
o File Shares (CD’s, …)
o Notes Databases
Very good integration with MS Office
User-friendly, easy to understand (as viewer) and to contribute (as author,
moderator or site-admin)

KM on Nuclear Safety in Germany: Strategy/Objective (Regulatory Part)
4th ASEM Workshop, October, Madrid, Spain
Beside the internal platforms: GRS is dealing with KM and KN (knowledge
networking) for national and international cooperation with its partners
In close partnership with the German nuclear regulator (BMUB) GRS provides a
web-based platform for inter-institutionary information, KM and collaboration.
Mission: Use web-based platforms to make nuclear safety and security information,
knowledge and experience visible and available to respective partners
Well-structured national knowledge platform with several levels was established
and is being permanently maintained
Beside national also international resources are included in this system by using
the different nuclear safety networks

KM on Nuclear Safety in Germany: Background How we start?
4th ASEM Workshop, October, Madrid, Spain
Phases
• 1. Documents collected on the own desktops
and in own file systems
• 2. Information in different databases (DVD, browser-based) (NPP-Handbooks, MediaWiki, Country Reports,…)
• 3. SharePoint based separate Intranets of the BMUB and GRS

Extranet: Portal for Nuclear Safety (PNS)
4th ASEM Workshop, October, Madrid, Spain
BMUB Extranet is the KM and collaboration facet with authorized access
The PNS is a platform for nuclear safety and security including radiation protection,
transport and waste safety.
It is used by BMUB for national purposes (exchange of information and
collaboration with German state authorities, advisory bodies, TSOs and others)
It is used by BMUB for international purposes (storage of information and space for
collaboration to prepare German positions)
19
Additional to PNS: German NNRP is a focal point for platforms of KM

ETSON Knowledge Management
Human networking of the association ETSON is complemented by an
effective browser-based platform, making information available,
sharing knowledge and supporting collaboration
respective resources are accessible whether open for the public or
password protected for dedicated teams
The main tasks of
the KM-Group are
the creation,
development and
maintenance of
ETSON and
EUROSAFE
Internet and Intranet
The further development of the common knowledge platform, including
knowledge DB and collaboration Team-Sites, is a challenging task.
