NATION REPORT 2

When you think of Argentina and dance, one

word comes to mind. Tango. Tango is both a dance and a

category of music. It originate in Buenos Aires

and quickly spread in popularity. It is now widely

popular and renowned around the world. It’s fun

to dance, too!

HISTORY

Page 3: Nation Report Part 2

The music side of Tango is filled with quick beats and

sensual sounds. It is written in a 2/4 measure. Tango varies widely over the century from the many

styles of the orchestras that played it. There are four

different classes of Tango, and they go as follows: Di

Sarli, D’Arienzo, Troilo, and Pugliese. Tango is strongly dance oriented, but it has been modified to work on the concert stage as well.

MUSIC

The dance of Tango heavily relies on the spirit of the song. The dancers must

move as one and pace eachother as the song moves along. It is highly

improvational, reflecting on the feeling of the dancers and the mood of the music. Tango is usually done in large groups

that move around the dance floor counterclockwise. Major “do-nots”

include crowding, bumping, cutting in front, disrespect, and stepping on

eachother’s feet. I would be frowned upon!

DANCE

Tango finds its roots deep in Argentina culture.

Argentinians take pride in the dance as a playful,

sensual, and formal embrace all as one. The dance has a beauty and rhythm that is not found much anywhere else. Its acrobatic dips and turns

and its beautiful chorography is what sets it apart and makes it a dance worth being proud about.
