When i’m planning a concert season, the thing that gets me most excited is variety — and the Nashville Symphony’s 2010/11 SunTrust Classical Series has plenty. on the 7A package, you’ll get a taste of everything from Mozart and Beethoven to visionary new works by John Adams and Philip Glass. Throughout the year, we’ll perform pieces by english, french, German, russian and Scandinavian composers, each with its own distinct flavor. i’m especially looking forward to conducting Duruflé’s requiem, a lush and moving choral showcase that will feature some of the nation’s best young singers, and you won’t want to miss our performance of Bruckner’s Third Symphony — an epic musical experience that will vividly demonstrate the remarkable acoustics of Laura Turner Concert Hall.

every time i conduct the Nashville Symphony, i’m reminded what an amazingly versatile orchestra we have. So when i programmed this year’s season, i was thinking about how to give our audiences a chance to experience the full scope of all that classical music has to offer. There’s something for everyone here. our 7B package opens with Louis Lortie, one of classical music’s fastest-rising stars, performing Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto. We’ll close out the season with a full performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony featuring the legendary mezzo-soprano frederica von Stade. in between, you can look forward to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a piece that sounds as thrilling and revolutionary today as it did a century ago, along with works by Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Dvorák, richard Strauss and one of today’s most gifted composers, richard Danielpour.

Jazz SerieS
Since the opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center in 2006, the Nashville Symphony has emerged as one of the city’s leading presenters of jazz music, welcoming such talents as Chick Corea & Gary Burton, Dianne reeves, George Benson, McCoy Tyner and many others in the past few years. The Adams and reese Jazz Series’ fifth season promises another roster of world-class jazz talent, kicking off with the versatile saxophonist David Sanborn. Later in the season, we’ll welcome virtuoso guitarist Al Di Meola, and we’ll also host another program of lively jazz improvisation, all presented in the ideal acoustical environment of Laura Turner Concert Hall.
October 8, 2010DAVID SANBORNConcert presented without orchestra
In a career spanning more than four decades, saxophonist David Sanborn has done it all: He played at Woodstock with the Butterfield Blues Band; he has recorded with such legends as Stevie Wonder, David Bowie and Paul Simon; and he has earned two GRAMMY® Awards for his own successful recordings. In the process, Sanborn has created a body of work that spans jazz, R&B, pop and rock, helping to define a new sound for his instrument. Still an active and vibrant performer today, he continues to make music that connects with the mind, the body and the soul.

A prolific artist, he has explored a wide range of sounds and styles throughout his career, from flamenco to fusion, all punctuated with his jaw-dropping guitar wizardry.

i like to think of The Ann & Monroe Carell family Trust Pied Piper Series as a musical adventure, a chance for the whole family to take a magical, fun-filled journey into the farthest reaches of the imagination. This year, the orchestra will fly into outer space to explore the planets and stars, we’ll bring all the excitement of the holidays to life, and we’ll go on a symphonic safari. Along the way, we’ll get help from some wonderful artists, including the Magic Circle Mime Company and the Platypus Theatre. This is going to be an exciting season, and i hope you and your family will join us! Be sure to show up early for the pre-concert activities, which add another element of learning and fun to your experience at the Schermerhorn.

October 30, 2010HALLOWEEN IN SPACENashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductorPresented in collaboration with the Adventure Science Center
Put on your space suit and take a trip into outer space as the Nashville Symphony performs selections that explore the mysteries of the night skies — but be prepared for some Halloween thrills and chills, including a crash-landing on a strange alien world! Holst’s The Planets and excerpts from Star Wars are among the works you can expect to hear after lift-off.
December 18, 2010A FLICKER OF LIGHT ON A WINTER’S NIGHTNashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductorPlatypus Theatre
Through the magic of music, a mysterious stranger helps three disgruntled children discover the meaning of the holidays by weaving a tale about our best-loved traditions, from Christmas trees to dreidels, from Santa Claus to Scrooge. With a mixture of popular favorites, traditional music and plenty of sing-alongs, this concert is sure to get even the meanest Grinch into the holiday spirit.
February 26, 2011THE LISTENERNashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductorMagic Circle Mime Company
The conductor plans to explore the many different art forms that involve a symphony orchestra — but her efforts are complicated by two overly enthusiastic spectators. A bugle-playing mime who wants to sing opera and a tap-dancing ballerina are just part of the conductor’s comic dilemma as these two zany characters bring “the art of listening” to life.
April 30, 2011LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY!Nashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductor
Join explorer Kelly and the orchestra as they embark on a symphonic safari through jungles, deserts and forests, encountering all kinds of animals along the way. In addition to carnivorous growls and melodious bird songs, you can expect to hear Haydn’s Bear Symphony, music from The Lion King and much more. The call of the wild beckons!

Over the past four decades, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra has earned a reputation as one of classical music’s most distinctive ensembles. Notable for choosing to perform without a conductor, the musicians bring a keen sensitivity and dramatic flair to everything they play. For this rare Nashville appearance with renowned soloist Garrick Ohlsson, Orpheus will perform a program that spans more than a century of Viennese musical life, from Beethoven’s dramatic Fourth Piano Concerto to Schubert’s graceful “Tragic” Symphony to Berg’s passionate Lyric Suite.

The Nashville Symphony and Chorus ring in the holiday season with their annual performances of Handel’s brilliant oratorio Messiah. More than a celebration of familiar religious themes, this Baroque-era masterpiece gives expression to universal thoughts and emotions through an astonishing range of music, with moments of tranquillity, darkness and exuberance. MAHLER Symphony No. 8 in E-flat major “Symphony of a Thousand”
Everyone should hear Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand” at least once, and with good reason: This epic piece is one of the most breathtaking works in the entire classical repertoire, bringing together an immense orchestra, two large mixed choirs, a children’s chorus, organ, offstage brass and eight vocal soloists. The music is among Mahler’s most fully realized, an exuberant affirmation of life, and an embodiment of the composer’s assertion that “the symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.”
