From this class I learned the basics of typographic anatomy and how to apply type to design. From this knowledge I have discovered I have a preference for hand generated and humanistic typefaces, as well as serifed typefaces. I feel this class has given me the tools and knowledge to apply type in a variety of media. I even discovered I have a weakness in wayfinding design. However, I also believe poster design is my strength.

“Kerning/Leading Quote”

I chose this quote because art and other creative medium was my way of zoning out all of the things in my life that I was not ready to handle. I felt that this statement fit my experience perfectly. The treatment choices I made emphasize what it means to me.

“100 Wishes Posters”

Of all the designs done by the high school and middle school students I felt this statement was the most unique and I was immediately able to visualize it. I chose a grafitti style typeface to reflect the idea that these wishes come from areas of poverty and crime.

“100 Wishes Posters”

When I think of Rosa Parks I think of tearing down the barriers of racism and uniting as mankind. With this in mind I sought out anti-racism quotes that were not commonly re-quoted. This quote by HG Wells struck me. I chose the block letters because I wanted to make it appear as though a young teen would have rendered it, as well as recognizing the texture would work beautifully in the screen printing process.

Public transportation is a fairly cheap system, but is almost never free of some kind of charge. Though it had never been an issue for me, reading a child wishing for this made me realize that it was probably a much bigger issue than I’d realized. That’s why I chose this one. The type treatments are meant to be much more professional than my other designs.

I meant this statement to be about making yourself a little bit vulnerable and let people see the real you. Too many people try to be tough and have a rough exterior that pushes people away, even when all these people want is someone to be there to make it better. I chose a very rough typeface to symbolize that rought exterior and simplified the bricks in the wall to be more of an abstract idea.

“ADP Logos”

Since one of the requirements of the ADP Logo was to reflect the education aspect of the association I used a book as the graphical element of these logo designs. I incorporated the american flag in the design as well to emphasize that this is an American association.

“ADP Logos”

Like the previous designs I represented the educa-tion aspect of the association, this time with a diploma. Rather than representing the America with flag designs I chose to do it through my choices of color.

“Eldridge Hall Wayfinding”

My designs for Eldridge Hall revolved primarily around the three main rooms students visit, the Writing Center, Natural Science Center and Computer Works. I chose to use simple ideograms to denote each room. My choice of Helvetica and Novarese were to reflect Troy University and to have a neutral san serif typeface as the primary text.

“Typographic Posters”

I had been doodling this phrase many times since my early teens and had even recently doodled it. I remembered it as I was packing up after getting this assignment and decided to use it. I also found another whole page doodle and vectorized it for the background. Instead of handrendering the type myself as I normally would have done, I chose to use hand rendered fonts to keep it looking consistant. The variations in color scheme came in from Professor Johnson’s comment that he thought it was maddening to color with a white crayon and that was perhaps a route I could take with this assignment.

“Typographic Posters”

I really wanted to do something gritty and full of various techniques. Photomanipulation, custom photoshop brushes, layer styles, typography, and more are present in this poster. Everything is meant to have a grungy feel to it, however I used Novarese for the fine print to make it less important than the rest of thedesign while reflecting the institution this fake event is supposed to be held (Troy University).
