PACING
Due to the assignment in TE 802 andaccording to the Open Court ReadingProgram pacing guide, the unit was 2 weeks. 1 week was spent on quotation marks
1 week was spent on commas in a series
Was pacing acceptable? The pacing worked well with what I had planned,
but for mastery of these topics, I would suggestand will spend more time on each topic in thefuture. A time period that I think would bebeneficial is 2 weeks per topic as well ascontinual review throughout the year.

WHY IS THIS SIGNIFICANT TOSTUDENTS?
It is important for students to learn aboutthese conventions because they can be veryuseful in their writing.Using quotation marks in creative writing gives
characters more personality, helps the storymove along quickly, and can make the storyseem more life-like since the characters aretalking just like real people.
Commas in a series are beneficial in listing, forexample look at the sentence above!
Commas in series are also used in the real world, especially through advertisements! E.g. Mannys Milk-Shakes! Enjoy strawberry, chocolate
and vanilla flavors.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT- OFFERED AVARIETY OF GROUP CONFIGURATIONSAND ACTIVITIES
Pre-assessment/warm up activities each day provided students achance to warm up their brains and practice skills learned. Thisallowed me to informally check their understanding.
Partner activities, including finding examples in text anddiscussing the uses of the conventions in specific text examples, gave students a chance to interact with peers and practice oral
communication. Pair work also encouraged participation, because each person had the responsibility to participate, andthe other person held their partner to that standard
Writing assignments were given for students to expressthemselves creatively as well as practice using conventionscorrectly. These assignments served as formal assessments.
Sharing time was given to students who wished to share theirwriting with the class.

WHAT I LEARNED
Management: using aclassroom raffle, withSmartie-Cash, allowed me tokeep the managementproblems to a minimum. Each Friday I conducted a
drawing from the smartie-cash

LITERATURE THAT SUPPORTSINSTRUCTION
In ElementaryClassroomManagement by CarolWeinstein and AndrewMignano, there is a
chapter on EnhancingStudents Motivation. Inthis chapter, there are afew suggestions that Ihave focused on in myunit.
1. Provide ExtrinsicRewards: Smartie-CashRaffle (though this isnot highly encouraged it is working well in my
classroom)2. Allow Students to
Create FinishedProducts:
Advertisements
3. Provide Opportunitiesfor Students to Interactwith Peers:pairactivities

WHAT STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUTQUOTATION MARKS
From the assessments I gave, I found that many studentslearned the correct placement of the quotation marks in adialogue. The students have practiced using quotationmarks in dialogue in the unit assignments and havereviewed them in daily quick write topics.
Many students have started using them in their writing ~ GoalAccomplished!
Students had trouble with the punctuation placementwithin the dialogue. The students need to continue to seeexamples of correct placement, and over time these skillswill progress. The third grade GLCEs do not specify that students need to
master this topic. Students are showing beginning knowledge ofthe punctuation placement ~ Goal Accomplished!

WHAT STUDENTS LEARNEDABOUT COMMAS IN A SERIES
Many students displayed knowledge of thecorrect placement of commas in a series in theiradvertisement assignments ~ GoalAccomplished!
A few students continue to write commas in thewrong place. For these students, I plan on continuing to review the
commas in a series topic in my English lessons. I will alsopoint out examples of commas in a series often, so thatstudents can see examples of the correct placement and
copy and internalize that placement.
Students learned that commas in a series existin the real world, and that people in theadvertising business use commas in a seriesoften in their work.
