Beginning to write your narrative essay
First, pick one of the topics below. If you have an idea that’s not one of these topics, that’s fine too! These are just some suggestions.
Choose from the topics below
-A time you were embarrassed-A time you lost something
-A time you felt really proud of yourself-A time you didn’t get to do something they really wanted to do
-A favourite childhood memory
-A memorable family experience -A time you did something nice for someone else
Pre-Writing – answer these questions on a lined piece of paper
1. What event will you be describing? 2. Why is the event important to you?
3. Who are the people that are in this story? 4. Where does this story take place? (Setting)

-The day my nephew Liam was born (last August)
-I’ll start with finding out that my sister went in labour early
-My parents and I rushing to the hospital, and arriving there to see Liam for the first time
Why is the event important to you?
-It’s important b/c this is the first grand-child for my parents
-It was the beginning of a new chapter for everyone
Who are the people that are in this story?
-My sister and her husband Chris
-Myself and my parents, and of course, baby Liam!
-The nurses at lions gate hospital will probably come up in the story too
Where does this story take place? (Setting)
-Mostly at Lions Gate Hospital
-Beginning takes place at my parents apartment b/c that when we found out she was in labour

FRIDAY – Planning your essay
This is the format for the essay
Today, we’re just going to write thehook of your essay. That’s the
beginning part of your introductoryparagraph.
On a lined piece of paper, write down “Narrative Essay Rough Copy”
and write the date on the paper

The narrative hook is part of the intro (usually the first few sentences) that grabs the readers’ attention. It helps set the stage and helps the reader guess what’s going to come in the
essay.
