– colonial Cairo
– fatra min al-zaman “Period of Time” (R. Allen) at the turn of the century
= assessment of >15 years of British occupation (since 1881) and
many decades of reform, advanced westernization:
Where were we when the reforms started (Muḥ. ʕAlī’s
time), and where are we now?

Ḥadīth ʽĪsà b. Hishām (1898 ff / 1907)
Neo-Classicism
asserts own Arabness ...
– ...against colonialism and British occupation (Lord Cromer) => political
– ...in face of increased Westernization => cultural
revives an (almost dated) tradition in order to prove that “own” cultural
equipment is sufficient to meet challenges of modernity...
...but only if reformed, adjusted to modern conditions
cf. roles of narrator (ʽĪsà) and (ex-)‘trickster’ (pasha)
– pasha: not dislikable, but ignorant, ridiculous in his old-fashionedness
(≠ eloquent pícaro of classical maqāma)
– ʽĪsà: convinced of many achievements of modernization and reform (human
rights, democracy, ...), is the pasha’s guide and teacher !
