There has been a number of sporting, agricultural, robotics and community achievements. This could not be possible without the commitment from teaching staff working in partnership with parents and carers. Im especially proud of our Year 12 cohort. Their sense of fun, maturity and efforts in fundraising for a local family, who had suffered a tragic fire, as part of their farewell to the school this week has been fantastic. I wish to encourage them with their studies in the lead up to their HSC exams which start on Thursday 17 October. Thank you to Mrs Schroder who has shown leadership and worked hard as their Year Advisor this year and all the Year 12 teachers who have done their utmost to prepare them for their exams. I look forward to celebrating the culmination of their six years of secondary school at the Year 12 Formal dinner on Thursday 14 November at Narooma Golf Club. A final wish is that all students, parents and carers enjoy their two week break and if travelling please do so safely. We look forward to everyones return on Monday 14 October 2019. PRINCIPAL’S DESK

This is the last newsletter for Term 3 and I would like to thank all parents, carers and community members who have

assisted the school and our students this term. There has been a number of sporting, agricultural, robotics and

community achievements. This could not be possible without the commitment from teaching staff working in

partnership with parents and carers.

I’m especially proud of our Year 12 cohort. Their sense of fun, maturity and efforts in fundraising for a local family,

who had suffered a tragic fire, as part of their farewell to the school this week has been fantastic. I wish to encourage

them with their studies in the lead up to their HSC exams which start on Thursday 17 October. Thank you to Mrs

Schroder who has shown leadership and worked hard as their Year Advisor this year and all the Year 12 teachers who

have done their utmost to prepare them for their exams. I look forward to celebrating the culmination of their six years

of secondary school at the Year 12 Formal dinner on Thursday 14 November at Narooma Golf Club.

A final wish is that all students, parents and carers enjoy their two week break and if travelling please do so safely. We

look forward to everyone’s return on Monday 14 October 2019.

JUNIOR ROBOTICS ROBOCUP STATE FINALS

Saturday the 7th September the Junior RoboRebels travelled to Canberra Florey for the day for the Robocup

Championships. The Team competed in both the Rescue and Soccer Divisions.

In the Rescue Division we had two Rookie Teams competing against 50 Teams from Regional NSW and ACT.

The participants have to program an EV3 Lego Robot to autonomously follow a black line, travel over/around

obstacles to a green chemical spill to rescue a person (drink can). Teams had five rounds of different courses to

achieve their best scores. Congratulations to all participants for showing resilience and improvement since the

June Regionals at Moruya and to the “Carrot Cakers” Team who won 2nd place.

In the Soccer Division we had one team, the “Super Amazing and Legendary Soccer Players” compete against seventeen other teams. The two EV3 Lego Robots are programmed by students to play soccer with an infrared soccer ball for ten minute games. We won two games and came a draw in another two games, effectively undefeated coming third overall. Congratulations to all and those going through to Nationals in Melbourne in October, good luck!

NAROOMA HIGH SCHOOL CHS SPORT TERM 2 & 3

Narooma High School has achieved some excellent results in CHS sport recently. The top two in each event from our School Athletics Carnival progressed to the Zone Carnival on Tuesday 18 June in Moruya. We had 47 students compete, with 30 progressing through to the Regional Carnival in Canberra on Monday 2 August.

Narooma High School now has 4 athletes who have qualified for the NSW CHS Athletics Championships at Homebush from the 4 - 6 September. They include Elli Beecham in the Open Pentathlon, Taj Shears in the 13 Years Boys High Jump, Mystery Bennett in the 12 years Girls 100m and Leah Westoll in the 14 Years Girls Javelin.

NHS had 33 students compete at the Zone X-Country in Jindabyne on Friday 17 May. We had 11 students then compete at the Regional X-Country which was on the 7 June. Three students represented South Coast at the NSW All-Schools Cross Country carnival at Homebush during the first week of Term 3 including Elli Beecham, Logan Allison and Sonny Dudley

Narooma High School are Zone Champions in the Open Girls Netball after they won the Zone Gala Day played in Bega. They progressed to the Regional Finals in Nowra on Wednesday 24 July where they came 5th. Narooma High School would like to thank Kylie Thomas in our Support Unit who umpired at both of these Gala days, without an umpire it would not be possible for the girls to receive these experiences.

We have had another two students who have represented the South Coast, including Elli Beecham late last term, who competed in the NSW CHS Squash Championships and Annabel Pratt early this term in the NSW CHS Gymnastics Championships. Annabel placed 7th in her division. Congratulations to all of these students.

TRANSITION ADVISER REPORT

This week I would like to highlight a great success story being Huon Lemarshall. Over the past two terms Huon has been

working with Tim Dummett, owner of Proscape Garden Construction.

Huon has developed a range of technical skills including laying cinder blocks, pouring concrete, welding gates, angle

grinding, constructing retaining walls, carrying out a large range of planting, tiling verandas, and paving.

Huon has really enjoyed the opportunity that Tim has provided. Aspects that have stood out include the early cold morning

starts throughout winter. Huon says that the type of work he has carried out is building resilience, endurance and a sense of

maturity. Listening and following instructions is an important component of meeting employer expectations. Huon has

enjoyed working with customers and being exposed to some amazing houses with astonishing views.

The really exciting component for Huon has been the Apprenticeship in landscaping he has been offered. This will begin in

January and is a direct reflection of the hard work that Huon has contributed over the past months.

I would like to personally thank Tim for the opportunity that he has provided Huon. Tim is one example of how community

employers are assisting Narooma High in preparing our students for the rigors of work life. Such experiences are vital for

workplace skill development and create work ready prospective employees for our business community.

WE WANT YOUR LIDS A “Lids 4 kids” collection point. Now it’s even easier to join many organisations across Australia in turning plastic lids destined for landfill into prosthetic limbs for children. A reused A4 box is now sitting (Narooma High School) for people to drop off plastic bottle tops that more often than not, end up in landfill. Lids that are accepted are plastic bottle top lids from soft drink and milk/juice cartons/bottles. They are gener-ally up the size of a credit card (or smaller) and too small to be recycled as a stand-alone hard plastic item in our kerbside collection. To drop off…They need to be clean and have the white waxy liner (if it has one) flicked out of it (this can be done easily with a pen or fingernail). When the box is full (with around 900 lids) it will be sent to Envision in Melbourne. They have a target of 2 mil-lion lids to meet! Once the lids get to Envision, they are colour sorted and made into pellets that are fed into a 3D printer that produces prosthetic limbs for children. It’s a great initiative with good social and environmental outcomes.
