This month I thought I would keep my message really short since we all have a lot going on. So basically this month, be mindful of yourself.

Try going 2 weeks without complaining about anything - I mean ANYTHING! Wear a rubber band on your wrist. When you find yourself wanting to complain snap the rubber band. Find the better side of whatever you are presented with you feel like complaining about.

Then since you are not complaining, find ways to be kind to random people. Perform a RAK - (Random Act of Kindness). You will be amazed about how great you will feel.

Challenges- No complaining for 2 weeks and perform at least 2 RAK's this month!

Happy 10 years to Taylor Construction Services! Rody Taylor started his construction clean-up business as a side job in 2006, and today they are a major player in the construction debris industry. They also know that selectively demolishing parts of

Furniture Mart1601 Village West Pkwy., Kansas City, KS

913-288-6299, www.nfm.com

The Nebraska Furniture Mart mission: "based on our tradition of selling cheap, telling the truth and providing the greatest selection and service, we improve people’s lifestyles.”

Russian immigrant Rose Blumkin began her spectacular version of the American Dream in 1937 when she opened Nebraska Furniture Mart in the basement of a small shop in downtown Omaha. Following her simple business tenet to “Sell cheap and tell the truth,” Mrs. B’s dedication and savvy would spearhead an uninterrupted 78-year sales growth span for the “Mart.” Nebraska Furniture Mart expanded to their Kansas City, Kansas Legends location in 2003 and they employ over 2,000 at all locations. Visit NFM at 1601 Village West Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas or on their website at www.nfm.com.

At the July 28 lunch, NFM will showcase the products and services they offer across Appliances, Flooring, Electronic Design and their Furniture Design Gallery. “Our Goal is to make life simple for you.” Stop by the NFM tabletop for a chance to win one of 4 $50 Gift Cards.

a home, while not damaging the rest, requires laborers with training and experience. That’s why they have created the only business in the K.C. area that can handle the construction debris process from start to finish. Only T.C.S. can safely and cleanly remove the old finishes and haul them away, along with providing their own roll off dumpsters to keep the remodel trash free.

And if a job doesn’t allow for a dumpster to be set, T.C.S. can bring designated clean-up crews to haul off trash throughout the building process. But the most exciting new product for NARI contractors, is the personalized logos that T.C.S. will allow you to have on their roll off containers. This new product allows you, the remodeler, to turn a roll off dumpster into a large billboard advertising your business! Taylor Construction Services is large enough to provide all of these solutions, but still small enough to provide excellent service and quick response times. Consider giving them a call for any demo or clean-up solutions.

mold, mildew, and eventually decay. Yes, mold. If surface temperatures are below the interior air’s dew point temperature, then we get condensation. Continuous condensation is a serious problem for the interior occupants’ health, comfort, and the building’s integrity.

Common locations for this are:• Around low quality windows & doors• Interior corners• Behind furniture• Where the building is in contact with the ground• Rim joists• Roof connections to the wall• Concrete balcony penetrations through the wall• Voids in the insulation layer

Best practices for thermal bridge free construction:• Use continuous insulation on the exterior side of framing,

without voids• Reduce framing in the wall• Use thermally broken joints in balconies• Use high performance windows and doors• Use thermally broken foundation assemblies• No penetrations through the insulation layer with highly

conductive materials

Technology Article…What are Thermal Bridges & Why are they so Bad?

A thermal bridge is a penetration in the insulation layer with a highly conductive material, allowing increased amounts of heat flow through that material. This is a problem – a BIG problem. Energy bills are increased, interior comfort is reduced, and the building’s integrity is compromised.

Sadly, thermal bridges are all around us. Chances are your home or office is full of them! For example, exposed concrete balconies are a very common thermal bridge in typical construction. The concrete slab extends out to the exterior air from the interior space. We spend money to keep that interior air warm in the winter, and cool in the summer, but then unnecessarily design our buildings to lose or gain heat.

Another classic example is a structural stud, or even worse, a metal stud! Many designs expose one side of the stud to the interior, and one to the exterior. That is very bad. The standard 2×6 wood framed wall with R19 batt insulation is more realistically a R13, and if metal studs are used, you can count on an R9. THERMAL BRIDGING MATTERS! IT MATTERS A LOT, AND NOT JUST FOR ENERGY LOSS.

Have you ever stood beside a cold interior surface in your home or office? We all have, especially in January. Thermal bridges cause these cold interior surfaces. Cold interior surfaces cause

REMY Deadline is EARLY…September 30….Plan It Out Now!We are once again using an online entry process for the REMY awards program and the online software program provided by NARI HQ is up and running! This year the REMY deadline is early due to the January 6-8, 2017 Johnson County Home & Garden Show where we hand out thousands and thousands of Remodeling Guides which highlights all the REMY winners. All REMY entries must be turned in by September 30 this year.

Here are the REMY deadlines/details and categories:

Early Bird - $165* if paid and entry submitted by September 19, 2016Regular - $175* if paid and entry submitted by September 26, 2016Late Entry $255* if paid and entry submitted by September 30, 2016

The per entry fee includes the cost of producing the full color Presentation Board which will be prepared for each entry and serves as a nice marketing tool for your company. *NARI members submitting a REMY entry for the first time will receive a $35 discount on their first project entry.

• The project finish date must be between July 1, 2014 and September 30, 2016.

• All entries must have before and after photos. Do not include photos with people in them.

• Only entries that have never been submitted in prior REMY contests are eligible.

• All projects entered in REMY categories must be an improvement or addition to an existing structure. Entries for new structures will not be accepted except where specifically noted in the category description.

• The same project may only be entered in one category. If you have a large, multi-area project, and would like to enter just a portion of it, it’s fine to break it down. For example, if your project included the remodel of an entire house, you can enter an entire house category OR enter a kitchen category, an interior category, and two bathroom categories, etc. Keep in mind you will have to break out costs for each project on each entry form. If you enter your project in this way, you will not be able to enter any of the same remodeled areas again.

• The Awards Committee and REMY judges reserve the right to disqualify, adjust the category, or deduct points from any entry that does not follow these rules and guidelines, without prior notice.

• All entry fees are nonrefundable, non-transferable, and cannot be carried over to subsequent years.
