I am writing these lines in March, shortly after the information meeting we held about our building renewal. The building renewal project is by far the biggest project we have considered in a long time. For many years we’ve been struggling with accessibility, and as was clearly artic-ulated in the recent information meeting and in previous meetings, the need is urgent. With this renovation we are trying to achieve more than accessibility. We hope to improve our pro-gramming space, provide our Rabbi with a study and update aging building systems. Previous generations purchased the building, improved on it, and acquired cemeteries. We are blessed with a vibrant community comprised of young families and members of all ages. It’s our turn to improve on what we have, for ourselves and for the next generation.

About fifty people attended the information meeting and many good questions were asked. The Building Renewal Steering Committee and the architect, Janna Levitt, provided answers to the best of their abilities, given that much of the work is still ahead. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the committee who have put a massive amount of effort into this project: Anna Pace, Mickey Narun, Lorne Cappe, Gary Lichtblau and Phyllis Berck. These volunteers have been tirelessly working on the project with dedication, transparency and board approval.

Overall there was tremendous support for the goals of the project and for the plans as present-ed. However, some members expressed concerns. One of the participants brought information about a different approach for achieving our goals.

See the Building Renewal report on p.7 for details on the project and the most recent meet-ing. The Building Renewal Steering Committee considers all suggestions. Please email them to buildingrenewal@narayever.ca. The committee reports regularly to the Narayever Board of Directors.

Regardless of what individuals feel about this project and the approach, I remind you that we all want what is in the best interest of our community. I would like us to maintain respectful behaviour and avoid divisive language. Our shul community, made up of people and relation-ships, is more important than our building.

The membership is yet to vote in a general meeting on the overall project and on the plans on how to move forward. In advance of this meeting, the motion to be voted on will be circulated, and enough time provided for members to submit their own motions before the meeting (as per the current constitution, motions must be submitted to the board at least four weeks in advance of the meeting). We also plan to have another open information meeting prior to this general meeting.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who ran our services during the Rabbi’s sabbatical. It is one of the unique features of our congregation that much of the service can be and is run by volunteers. Yashar Koach!

The shul Purim celebration was a great success with a full house, a lively Purim Shpiel, Megilla reading by our volunteers, costumes galore, games and hamantaschen. Thank you to Rabbi Ed who conducted the celebration (in a chef ’s outfit), to Jill Magen our Celebrations chair who organized the event, to the volunteers who participated and helped, to Erica Denburg and Sabrina Friedman who directed the shpiel written by the Mendelsohn-Kalikow family, to the ShinShinim and to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah class.

Finally I would like to mention other fun events for adults we’ve recently enjoyed at our shul.

• The ShinShinim cooking night was a success. In addition, people have enjoyed the ShinShinim movie nights where they select interesting Israeli movies to screen and discuss. Thank you Lian and Nir.

• The Saturday afternoon chanting program, Singing out Shabbat, with Alon and Tiferet Nashman has become an enjoyable and uplifting pastime for many.

• The Adult Education Committee put together a couple of wonderful music programs, the first facilitated by Rena Ashton and the second by Peter Sevitt. Both events were well attended with people sipping kosher wine and singing along.

Thank you to Brenlee Robinson, our Adult Education chair, and to the other volunteers who helped out. Come have fun at shul, and find new ways to grow! Happy spring!

Dear Friends,

Among the pleasures of my recent sabbatical period in Israel was the opportunity to sit and read works of contemporary Jewish scholarship that I generally don’t have time for in my regular busy life here in Toronto. One of the books that I read was Jeremiah: The Fate of a Prophet, by Rabbi Binyamin Lau. I had studied Jeremiah with Rabbi Lau in a course I took at the Hartman Institute several years ago, and found him to be a most engaging teacher. He has also been one of the main promoters of a project called 929: Tanakh B’yachad, which provides a framework for people to study one chapter of the Hebrew Bi-ble every day until they complete the entire Tanakh (there are 929 chapters in total in the Hebrew Bible.) Rabbi Lau comes from a very prominent line of Orthodox rabbis, and in that context is considered an important spokesperson for a moderate form of Orthodoxy which places great focus on social justice. I was very happy to have the chance to read his book and deepen my understanding of one of the most important of the biblical prophets and consider the implications of his prophecy for contemporary Israel.

Rabbi Lau’s book explicates the historical Jeremiah, but it also clearly has a contemporary political agenda. Jeremiah prophesied under a succession of kings of Judah who saw them-selves as infinitely more powerful and less vulnerable than they actually were. Tiny Judah was surrounded by massive powers with Egypt to the south, and Assyria and Babylonia to the north. Its kings thought they could maintain Judah’s independence by entering into strategic alliances, all the while ignoring the decadence, corruption and moral depravity inside the kingdom. Jeremiah’s message was that salvation lay not in clever foreign policy but rather in creating a society that was decent. He repeatedly warned that Jerusalem could fall if Judah didn’t change its ways. The critics who persecuted him accused him of being a defeatist whose words only sapped the morale of the soldiers and the people.

We know how the story ends. Judah, including Jerusalem and its Temple, were destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, as Jeremiah had warned. Rabbi Lau clearly sees Jeremiah as being of interest not just for historical reasons but also for its relevance to contemporary Israel.

I was privileged to attend Rabbi Lau’s synagogue for Shabbat services during my sabbati-cal and hear him deliver a sermon in which he decried the legitimization of the extremist

Otzma Yehudit party as part of the Israeli election campaign then under way. He vowed to work every day until the election to marginalize this group, whose racist platform remind-ed him of the Nazis’ Nuremberg Laws. Many members of his synagogue were displeased with his decision to introduce his political views into the Shabbat service.

Much has changed in the 2,500 years since the time of the prophet Jeremiah. Rabbi Lau’s book, and his sermon during a contentious election campaign, provoke us to ask whether, in the midst of all that change, the basic values conflicts in society remain essentially the same. What is the place of values and ethics in the midst of a tough world in which some of our competitors and enemies behave in unscrupulous ways? To what extent is the role of leaders to boost national self-esteem and pride, and to what extent is it to uncover and ad-dress the corruption and injustice that lie at the heart of society? Should we listen to those voices who are defending the status quo, or to those who maintain that only major, even radical, change can avert the coming train wreck? How do we understand the intersection of religion and politics? These are Jewish questions, and also universal human questions that should occupy us all.

TEFILLAH COACH’S MESSAGE

In Psalm 96, part of the Kabbalat Shabbat Friday evening service, we proclaim ,ׁ Sing to Adonai a new song. Rabbinic interpreters of the Psalms linked this quote to a line from the Shabbat morning Shacharit service: – in goodness, day after day You renew creation. Situated in a part of the service preceding the Shema in which we ac-knowledge God as creator, this phrase proposes the nov-el idea that creation was not a onetime occurrence. The implication is that if we choose to take notice, we may in our own ways appreciate and experience daily renewal.

The first quote refers to human activity, while the second involves divine action. Each quote contains a word de-rived from the root ח־ד־ש (new). On this basis the Rabbis drew a parallel between these human and divine actions: we sing a new song to the one who renews creation daily. Further, Hasidic master Elimelekh of Lizhensk taught: during the six days of the week we reach toward the Di-vine through work we do in the world, while on Shabbat, we do so through prayer and song.

One of our strengths as a community is our singing. As our voices resound within our sanctuary, perhaps you do as I sometimes do - simply listen to the heartfelt sing-ing of others, allowing it to wash over you and carry you along with it.

In a discussion of what constitutes tefillah (Talmud, Be-rachot, 29B) the Rabbis say that simply reciting the stan-dard prayer formula doesn’t cut it; one’s emotions must be engaged in the process. Singing together is a wonder-ful way to become more emotionally engaged.

Furthermore, say the Rabbis, one must “introduce a novel element” ( – note the same root as above -in one’s tefillah. Both newness and emotional in (ח־ד־שvolvement in tefillah are necessary to prevent one’s prayer from becoming rote recitation (keva), and thus devoid of spiritual intention (kavanna).

Here are some ways we can deepen our spiritual focus: occasionally adding new melodies to the ones we regular-ly sing, gaining new insights into tefillah by delving into meaning of the prayers, or learning to take on a new role in the service. Did you know?

In the Ashkenazi Hebrew pronunciation, the Hebrew vowel shown here under the aleph ָא is pronounced “oh”, while in the Sephardi pronunciation (ie standard in Israel and for us) that vowel is most often pronounced “ah.” However, there are times when we too should pronounce this vowel as “oh.” But how can we tell? Fortunately, the Lev Shalem Siddur has a subtle way of indicating this for us. When the vowel is to be pronounced “oh” you will notice that the stem, or vertical line, of the vowel is slightly but noticeably longer. To illustrate, look in the Ashrei prayer in our siddur on page 182, 5th line from the top, 2nd last word: . Hebrew speakers recognize that the root word here is and would know to pronounce the word in question as “okhlam.” But for non-Hebrew speakers, look in the siddur and compare the vowel under the א with the vowel under the ל. The longer stem of the vowel under the א cues us to pronounce it “oh” not “ah.” (maybe you just said “ohhh!” to yourself...)

Major Vote on Whether to Proceed with Significant Renovations of the Shul Building at the:

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGJune 23, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the

FIRST NARAYEVER CONGREGATION

This year the Annual General Meeting of the Members of the First Narayever Congregation will be particularly significant.

We will, of course, conduct the regular business that occurs at the Annual General Meeting such as the election of Board Members, the approval of financial statements and the reappointment of the auditor, among other matters.

However, at this meeting the Membership will also be asked to vote on whether to go ahead with a proposed major renovation of the synagogue.

There will be a formal resolution from the Board of Governors, which we intend to send out the first week in May, 2019.

The Building Renewal and Steering Committee recently held a town hall meeting on the renovation on March 17. More information meetings will be held on June 2 at 5:00 pm and June 12 at 6:30 pm.

The Constitution also permits individual Shul Members to submit resolutions for consideration at the Annual General Meeting to the Board, four weeks prior to that Meeting, or by May 26, 2019.

A complete Annual General Meeting voting package, with all resolutions and proxy forms, will be mailed out to the Membership three weeks in advance of the Meeting, i.e., on or before June 3, 2019.

If you cannot attend the Annual General Meeting in person this year please seriously consider providing a proxy to another member that can attend. Each member may hold up to four proxies. Please be on the lookout for further information in the Narayever Net, as this important meeting date draws closer.

BUILDING TASK FORCE

In January 2019, we finally received the Ontario Municipal Board decision that approved our plans for changes to the Narayever building. This was the con-clusion of a two-and-a-half year process that included a Committee of Adjustment hearing, an appeal to the OMB with three days of hearings and waiting for the final decision. It was also a major step in a very long process for our congregation.

WHY WE NEED TO UPGRADE OUR BUILDING

For many years, our congregation has debated how best to renew our historic synagogue building in order to meet our needs for the present and the future.

BUILDING RENEWAL PROJECT

There is agreement on certain basics:

Accessibility — We need to make our beloved shul accessible to all, so that everyone can participate in services and events on an equitable and dignified basis.

Better Space — We need better use of space for pro-gramming, particularly children’s and youth activ-ities, general administration, and an office for our Rabbi.

Building Systems — We need to update aging heating and air conditioning systems.

HISTORY

The shul’s leadership and membership have been wres-tling with how to accomplish these goals for years. Here’s some history.

2000 — The last major expansion of the building was almost twenty years ago. The nature of that expan-sion was hotly debated at the time.

2009 — The shul conducted a major study of elevator options.

2011 — A building permit application was submitted for an expansion plan consisting of an elevator at the rear of the building and for 2000 sq. ft. of additional space. This proposal was not followed through and the building permit application lapsed.

2015 — Consideration and consultation with the mem-bership on alternatives for our building including the possible acquisition of an adjacent property and development on our property.

THIS PLAN

This plan for the shul building started to take shape in 2014. Harry Schachter as president at the time recog-nized that accessibility was a major issue and that over the years several plans for making this building accessible had been considered.

In 2015 the members were consulted about the future of the shul building through two surveys and five consultation meetings. The conclusion was that the ma-jority wanted to renovate to provide accessibility and to stay on our property. Information meetings were also held in 2016 and 2017.

In 2016 we started developing the plan with LGA Ar-chitects. One of the objectives, in keeping with the shul’s principles of inclusivity, was to provide an elevator at the front of the building so that all would have a dignified entrance. The approach was, not to simply add what is needed today, but to provide for the future of the shul. These plans have been posted in the social hall for the past few years. In 2016 we also started discussions with our local coun-cillor and with City staff on planning and heritage issues and made great progress on both. We knew that as the City changed the zoning by-law in 2013, we faced a greater challenge than with earlier plans.

In 2016 LGA architects were selected to work on the plan and created an attractive design that would meet our needs while being sensitive to the surrounding neighbor-hood.

The plan includes:• an elevator at the front of the building to provide all

with a dignified entry• accessibility as a feature of the building throughout• a more spacious and attractive social hall and a new

and improved kitchen• new programming and administrative spaces, with a

Rabbi’s office • new, up-to-date building systems

The heart of the shul, the sanctuary, would remain essen-tially unchanged in size and appearance.

The Plan – 1,800 Sq ft of new space • Elevator at the front with main entrance - 180 sq ft

of new space• Second floor addition to include administration

office, Rabbi’s office, program space and library and accessible washroom – 1,160 sq ft of new space

• Basement to include lowered floor, column removal, new kitchen, accessible washroom, multi-use space with dividers, new building systems - 470 sq ft of new space

• Sanctuary shifted east with programming space

MOVING FORWARD

At the information meeting on March 17 the building plans were presented and many questions and comments received. A summary can be found under “What We Heard’.

This plan is expensive. In 2016 the estimated cost of the project was $4 million including relocation. We know that costs have increased over the past two years and that the earlier estimate was based on a very preliminary plan. A major effort now is to update the costs.

We are very fortunate to have a major donor, Sam Mizrahi, who committed $1 million to the project. We also have commitments from current and former board members and a few others, bringing total commitments to $1.8 million. However, to make this renovation a re-ality, there will need to be a commitment by all members. The Capital Campaign Committee, co-chaired by Mark Guttman and Anne Golden, is developing a plan for the fundraising.

All shul members will be asked to contribute to making this dream a reality.

NEXT STEPS

The project consultants are continuing discussions on the planning and heritage issues. The City has accepted that the heritage value of this building is the fact that our con-gregation has been here for 75 years, therefore they are accepting of the changes to the front of the building.

In order to ensure we have a reliable estimate of costs more work is being conducted by our architects and other consultants to refine the plans and provide a robust esti-mate. We have a number of consultants working with us to further develop the plan to provide the cost estimate.

They are:

There will be information meetings on June 2 at 5:00 pm and June 12 at 6:30 pm.

The target is the Annual General Meeting on June 23 at which the membership will consider and vote on pro-ceeding to the design and construction and financing of the project.

With approval by the congregation and raising the need-ed funds the projected construction start date is April 2020 with completion the following summer.

We will need to be out of the building for the duration of the construction. The Building Renewal Committee is working on plans for the relocation that will allow us to continue to offer our services and programs during the construction period.

WHAT WE HEARD

The Information Meeting held on March 17, 2019 at 3:00 pm was attended by approximately 50 members. Excellent ideas, questions and concerns were raised, and the following is a summary of what we heard. Responses from the Building Renewal Committee at the meeting are also provided.

Accessibility :We heard that providing a fully accessible building is an absolute requirement and long overdue. Several members described this need as a moral imperative. That includes accessing each floor in the building as well as access to the Bima. It also includes accessibility for people with hear-ing impairments. A number of members said that provid-ing an accessible shul for everyone is key to the values of the Narayever community and it is time to finally move forward to achieve this goal. Natural Light:The western wall of the sanctuary, above the rear entry doors to the sanctuary is proposed to change as a result of adding the elevator. Currently in the plans, less nat-ural light will enter the sanctuary from that direction. We heard that members would like to explore additional ways of allowing natural light to enter the shul, such as skylights. Suggestions were also made to add solar panels to the roof. The Building Task Force will work with our architect, Janna Levitt, to explore these options, and re-port back.

Sound Quality & Acoustics:A member asked about sound transmission from the elevator into the sanctuary. Janna Levitt indicated that the design team includes an acoustical engineer to ensure that the sanctuary remains quiet and that the acous-tics in the room remain bright and clear. In addition, a member asked that we consider adequate sound isolation between the sanctuary and the social hall below. These are all things that will be taken back to the Committee and architect for review. There will be further reporting back to members about these and all matters in the coming months.

Front Doors of the Shul:A member asked about what will happen to the front doors of the shul. The current plan is to reuse them as entrances into the sanctuary from the elevator and stairs.

Number of People in the Renovated Sanctuary:Questions arose about how many people will be able to sit in the sanctuary and use the social hall in the rede-signed building. The new design contemplates the same numbers as we can currently accommodate.

Security:There were some questions about security measures. A Security Committee has been established to look at this matter. More information will follow as the new commit-tee investigates these issues. Reporting back to members will happen in the coming months.

An Alternative Design Proposal:An alternative proposal was presented to members by Joel Edelson, former Narayever President. The proposal is based on the shul buying an adjacent property at a pre-mium and installing a platform lift in between the two buildings.

He suggested that the alternative proposal would meet the shul’s needs regarding space and accessibility and be less costly, take less time, with less disruption than the current proposal. 

Some members expressed concern about delaying the OMB approved project for a number of reasons. First, providing accessibility is an urgent requirement and can-not wait for another proposal to be developed. Second, after many years of alternative proposals, it is now time to move forward with the plans that have City Planning approval. Third, a similar proposal was explored a num-ber of years ago and was not viable as the City of Toronto was opposed to the mix of residential and institutional use of adjoining properties. And finally, the property in question is not for sale.

TISHA B’AVYOM HAZIKARON AND YOM HA-ATZMAUT

TIKKUN LEYL SHAVUOT

Our annual Yom HaShoah commemoration will be held on Wednesday evening May 1. Please join us as we come together to honour the memory of those mur-dered in the Shoah. Mincha will begin at 6:45 pm and the full Holocaust Remembrance ceremony will follow from  7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. We will listen to readings and music, light memorial candles, recite the names of family members who perished, and participate in song and prayer.

Shavuot festival services will take place on Sunday June 9 and Monday June 10, beginning at 9:00 am. Yizkor and Megillat Rut on Monday. Services each day will be followed by our traditional Shavuot dairy kiddush lunch.

It is a custom to decorate the sanctuary with flowers on Shavuot. A big thank you to Brenda and Jerry Enchin for donating the flowers that will adorn our sanctuary on Shavuot in honour of their 50th wedding anniver-sary. If members would like to donate to our Shavuot Kiddush lunch in honour of Brenda and Jerry’s anni-versary (or any other occasion) please contact the office.

Our annual commemoration of Tisha B’Av will take place on Saturday night August 10 with a Maariv service beginning at 9:30 pm followed by a reading of Megillat Eikhah. If you would like to chant a perek of Eikhah, please contact Rabbi Elkin at rabbi@narayever.ca.

Please join us on this fast day as we commemorate an-cient tragedies that befell the Jewish people, and reflect on what it teaches us about our relationship with God, and with each other.

On May 13 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm the Narayever commu-nity is warmly invited to help us mark Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Remembrance Day) with a commemorative cer-emony. Our wonderful ShinShinim Nir and Lian would love to have you at this meaningful event that uniquely embodies their experience of this important day on the Israeli calendar. Following our Yom HaZikaron ceremo-ny, we will celebrate Yom Ha-atzmaut (Israeli Indepen-dence Day) as a community at 6:45 pm. Snacks, treats, drinks, and a lovely celebration will be enjoyed by all. The entire combined event will conclude by 7:30 pm.

Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907 - 1972) was one of the great religious teachers and moral prophets of our time. Born in Warsaw to a long line of Hasidic rabbis, he chose to study philosophy in Germany. Expelled back to Warsaw, he escaped just weeks before the Nazi inva-sion and settled in the United States. Through a series of books, he contributed greatly to the spiritual renewal of Judaism. A passionate champion of interfaith dia-logue, he served as an official observer at Vatican II and was influential in challenging the Catholic Church to overcome the legacy of anti-Semitism. He raised a prophetic challenge to the social issues of his day, marching with Martin Luther King and protesting the Vietnam War. HERRING, THE NATIONAL FISH OF YIDDISHLANDwith Miriam Borden

HOW DO I CALL YOU? LET ME COUNT THE WAYS…with Rabbi Valerie Stessin

Herring has filled Jewish hearts, minds, and bellies for centuries, and has been described by writer Michael Wex as the “national fish of Yiddishland.” But what, if any-thing, is Yiddish, or indeed Jewish, about herring? What accounts for herring’s perennial popularity in our con-temporary consciousness? And why is a red herring red?

Miriam Borden is a researcher, Yiddish translator and tour guide of Kensington Market with the Ontario Jewish Archives. She has written about 20th century Jew-ish Torontonian culture in the Canadian Yiddish press, and curated two exhibitions on Yiddish at the University of Toronto’s Robarts Library (most recently, “Komets-alef: o! Back to School at the Yiddish Kheyder”). She is a doctor-al student in Yiddish at the University of Toronto.

What is God’s name in the Jewish tradition? YHWH (the Hebrew letters: Yōd, Hē, Vav, Hē) or Adonai? Elo-him or HaShem? How many names does the Jewish tradition have for God? Did you ever wonder why we have so many and what they mean? What names do we use more often and which have we never heard? Why is it forbidden to pronounce the name of God, the Tetra-grammaton, which is used most often in the Bible, the way it is spelled? We will look together for answers to these enigmas in our interactive workshop. Then we will explore how the multitude of God’s names influences our spiritual life and invites us to develop our unique personal relationship with the Divine.

Rabbi Valerie Stessin, the first woman ordained by the Conservative/Masorti movement in Israel, is a pioneer in the emerging Israeli field of chaplaincy and spiritual care. In her role as the head of the Schwartz Center for Health and Spirituality, which runs the leading spiritual care professional training programs in Israel, Rabbi Stessin has been at the center of this effort to establish the field. She is the Co-Founder and Director of Kashouvot, a non-profit geared to implement spiritual care in the field. Kashouvot is a recipient of grants from the Narayever’s Yom Kippur Social Action Fund.

He also serves as a spiritual director and dream guide to seekers in the US, Canada and South Africa. He is the author of The Enneagram and Kabbalah: Reading Your Soul, Cast in God’s Image, Show Me Your Way: The Complete Guide to Exploring Interfaith Spiritual Direction and co-editor of Jewish Spiritual Direction. His newest book, Seeking Redemption in an Unredeemed World, has just been released by Graduate Theological Foundation Publishings.

PURIM CELEBRATIONS

Purim was, as always, a wonderful evening at the Narayever. There was inspired theatre, beautiful and participatory Megillah reading, original costumes, carni-val cavorting, mishloach manot delivering and haman-taschen gobbling.

“HaMalka” with its Hamilton-inspired themes and tunes elicited thunderous laughter and applause from the audience. Our very own Rachel Zilberg put a new spin on role playing and brought the audience down with her campy rendition of Vashti and Haman. The younger performers sang and twirled as the chorus and contes-tants to replace Vashti. The audience roared when How-ard Buckstein rapped during his spin in the competition to be the new queen. The young Esther transformed into the captivating, more mature riffing Esther. Noa Mendelsohn was august as King Ahashverosh while Shayne Robinson’s entertaining Mordechai helped Esther figure out how to turn a nasty situation around. A huge thank you to the Mendelsohn-Kalikow family for their witty adaptation of “Hamalka.” Kol HaKavod to directors Erica Denburg and Sabrina Friedman who per-formed magic to bring out the best in all the performers!

And that was only the beginning. The Megillah readers Nora Gold, Jordan Wosnick, Rebecca Colman, Fran Sharpe, Harry Schachter, Sarah Margles, Tanhum Yoreh, Sarah Colman, and Rabbi Ed allowed us all to fulfill the mitzvah of hearing the Megillah, not once but twice.

Thank you to the Bar and Bar Mitzvah youth who baked hamantaschen and along with older teens staffed the games and crafts booths at the Purim carnival.

Kehilla, an organization that  champions affordable housing initiatives responsive to the needs of the Jewish community in the Greater Toronto Area.

Jewish Free Loan, a micro-financing organization that provides interest-free loans to members of the Jewish community in need, helping them to be financially self-sufficient and maintain their dignity during times of financial hardship.

Downtown Jewish Community School (DJCS), where our funding will cover the cost of DJCS’ participation in the ShinShinim program. Many members of our community have or are attending the school.

First Interfaith Out of the Cold Program, which provides relief to needy people in Toronto. Many members of our congregation have been or are currently very active with the program.

Jewish Family and Child Services, where our funding will support (i) sending JF&CS clients to community seders; (ii) delivery of Pesach food boxes; and (iii) direct financial assistance.

Machane Lev, Canada’s first and only overnight camp (one week) for Jewish youth who are LGBTQ2+ or who come from LGBTQ2+ families/communities.

Ve’ahavta’s Mobile Response to Homelessness, which is dedicated to responding to the needs of needy people via a van that provides food and harm reduction supplies.

YOM KIPPUR APPEAL FUNDS DISTRIBUTION

Makom Afterschool, an innovative and pluralistic Hebrew immersion and Jewish studies program for children in junior kindergarten through Grade 4. Makom also provides Jewish and Hebrew learning and Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation for pre-teens and teens in grades 5 through 8. Currently 1/3 of the students are from families who are members of our shul.

ISRAEL

Merchavim, an Israeli non-profit dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in schools. Our funding will support capacity building efforts and their “Art of Kulanana” program which provides an opportunity for 9 – 12 year olds from diverse backgrounds (Arabic Israeli, secular and ultra-orthodox Jews, and others) to learn about one another and build bridges between their communities through various art projects.

Kashouvot, an initiative that brings pastoral care into medical and community settings across the country. Its model is unique as it provides spiritual care in healthcare institutions, which is not institutionalized in Israel.

Leket, Israel’s largest food bank and food rescue network. It collects and redistributes excess food across the country in order to feed those in need.

Krembo Wings, which  provides recreational  oppor-tunities for children and youth with disabilities in Israel. The organization is also dedicated to providing safe spaces for cross-cultural understanding between its diverse attendees as well as important dialogue about inclusion of those with special needs in Israel.

The Social Action committee distributed its Yom Kippur Appeal funds earlier this year. Thank you again to all who contributed so that we can help these worthy organizations. The committee distributed $68,000, as follows:

Kvutzat Reut-Beit Yisrael, which began as an urban kibbutz of five religious and secular families living in public housing in Jerusalem’s Gilo neighbourhood. It now includes 85 families and focuses on building a just and pluralistic society based on socioeconomic equity and respect for difference among diverse Jewish communities.

Arava & Dead Sea Centre, where our funding will support their environmental education project that will take place in Ein Gedi High School in Israel and Gour Safi High School in Jordan. The 3-year project teaches local youth about their environment, while supporting professional relationships between teachers across the border.

Our 2018/2019 Bat/Bar Mitzvah class has enjoyed a fun and enriching second half of the year. Students explored the Jewish life cycle with visits to both the Mikveh and Benjamin’s, as well as some hands-on experiences with Hebrew calligraphy and tzitzit tying & repair. All in all, it has been a fantastic year together. Mazel tov to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah students on completing the course and on their year of simchas!

When a program is designated for “families”, we are targeting the content for kids under bat/bar mitzvah age.

Eretz Ir, an Israeli non-profit dedicated to raising the community quality of life across Israel’s peripheral cities through employment, community building and social entrepreneurship programs. The program will focus on economic and personal empowerment for 10 youth at risk. The funds will also be used to maintain and improve contact with the 100+ graduates of the program.

The final Shabbat of kids’ programming of the school year will be June 22, 2019.

This will be a full Shabbat morning service for fami-lies of all ages. Co-led by a team of dedicated parents, our Youth Committee and our Director of Family and Youth Engagement, Sabrina. Rabbi Elkin will be leading a shul trip to Israel February 18 - 27, 2020. This is a different kind of trip than the last two Narayever trips in 2003 and 2012, or indeed most Israel trips. This is what is called a “dual-narra-tive” trip. Participants will have the opportunity to un-derstand different narratives about the Mideast conflict by meeting people and visiting sites both within Green Line Israel and in the West Bank. On the West Bank, we will be visiting Palestinian towns and cities, as well as Israeli settlements. We will also be learning about a variety of inspiring peace building and coexistence ini-tiatives that are taking place which belie the headlines.

I wanted to give a shout-out to the hosts for Kesher Shabbat who graciously opened their homes to share a Shabbat meal in February 2019 as well as the guests who came forward with wine, flowers, appetizer platters, and offers to help wash the dishes, and train the puppy! What was most illuminating was how one decision can impact upon a community.

For example? Jill Magen, one of the hosts offered to de-lay the start of her Shabbat dinner to accommodate a guest who was running the Friday night service. That guest was Reuven Sholzberg and he shared the Dvar Torah he gave at shul at Jill’s table. One of the guests Brian Cohen, a new member was at the table, heard this Dvar, and then offered to sign up to do a Dvar Torah of his own. Another guest Rafi Clarke had never been to a Shabbat dinner before and reported it was a warm, gracious and lovely evening. “People ask me why I want to become Jewish. For the food of course!” reported Rafi who said their conversations at the table were so lively

that people were talking well after 11:00 pm. Rafi made a donation to the shul’s building renewal program in honour of the Kesher program. At that Shabbat dinner, conversation unfolded until 11:30 pm and some of it was in Russian!

On the other end of the temporal continuum, Sarah Margles and Hartley Wynberg accommodated an early sitting for Rabbi Julia Appel and her family. Those with young children need to eat on the earlier side of Friday night and these families were able to get together so the children could have their own Shabbat social time, and their parents could hold onto their sanity. It was really lovely to see how flexible people were in the quest to open the door to guests.

and my husband Mark Guttman. At Julia Gluck’s home, after the blessings for Shabbat, the strategy was small plates and finger food on two tables so guests had to get up and refill their plates, and by design, each time they went to refill, they had to sit back down next to someone to whom they had not spoken. In this way they had a chance to make a “kesher” according to Julia who set her meal up to maximize social mobility. Kesher is the Hebrew word for connection.

At our home we were delighted when the Shuster boys, ages 10 and 6 sat around our Shabbat table with their parents Marina and Josh Shuster, as well as fellow guests Anna Pace and Barry Pervin, my son Ira Halpern and my husband, Mark Guttman and we all talked as a group. No kids table for us! The boys were delighted by our kiddush system which we jokingly refer to as the “pisher” because it is designed to spout grape juice or wine into eight small silver kiddush cups like an elegant fountain!

One of my guests dropped off a thank you card after Shabbat along with drawings of our Shabbat table that now graces our mantle.

I am hoping that for future Kesher dinners some guests will consider becoming hosts if they are comfortable doing so and that way hosts can become guests as well. The next Kesher Shabbat will take place on Friday night June 7.

REMEMBERING LILLIAN MENDELSOHN z”l

When Lillian Mendelsohn passed away in early March, our community lost a pillar of strength, a person who had a true commitment to Jewish values. 

Lil, or Lolla, as she was known to her grandchildren and some of her family, had a profound loyalty, love and commitment to her family, friends and her work. She never gave up on anyone, always attempting to help others solve their problems, and bring people together. She strived, in her quiet and firm way, to bring together those around her who had drifted apart. She persevered,

and never despaired, always encouraging mutual under-standing and love, until her final days. 

Lil was a wonderful mother to Aurora and Liv, and was like a mother to their husbands. She was an adoring and dedicated grandmother. Her grandchildren loved her in return, and she was always an integral part of their lives, taking great interest in everything that they did. She has instilled in them a strength and love that they can never lose.

REMEMBERING LILLIAN MENDELSOHN z”l CONT’D

Lil was born in Winnipeg’s famous ‘North End.’ She absorbed the values of social justice, compassion, Yid-dishkeit and community, for which the North End was known. These were values that were deeply engrained in Lil, and she never forgot them. She attended public school, and after school went to Peretz School and the Shalom Aleichem School. The middle of three children, she was the strength of her family. She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend.

Lil met Eric while they were at the University of Manitoba. Eric famously proposed to her on their first date. It took her a few months, but she soon re-alized that Eric was ‘the one’ for her, and she ac-cepted his proposal.  They were married for 52 years, some of that time spent in Montreal, a year in Israel, but mostly in Toronto. Their home was always open to everyone. Shabbat dinners, preparing Shiva meals, nothing was too much for Lil. Her warmth and generosity were felt by all who knew her. 

As a social worker, Lil touched and improved the lives of so many. From her first job in Montreal working with troubled youth, to her many years at Toronto’s Baycrest,

everything that she did revolved around improving and strengthening the lives of others. She volunteered with the Stephen Lewis Foundation and tutored at St. Albans House.

Lil was a tiny woman, but so full of strength and quiet fortitude. She will be forever missed by all of us.

DOORS OPEN TORONTO 2019

The 20th annual Doors Open Toronto (DOT) will celebrate the first 20 years of DOT while looking for-ward to the next 20 years. The Narayever is proud to participate again this year.

DOT 2019 will feature Toronto’s Indigenous past, pres-ent and future, interwoven through the event locations with special programming taking place throughout the weekend.

As a shul community we have been on a continuous journey to explore how we in the Jewish community can become better neighbours to Indigenous people. We are delighted that cultural and social historian Prof. David Koffman has agreed to be a featured speaker at 3:00 pm to launch his book The Jews’ Indian: Colonialism, Pluralism, and Belonging. Koffman will give a presenta-tion of his book, which is provocative and timely, the first history to critically analyze Jewish participation in, and Jews’ grappling with, the legacies of Indigenous history and the colonial project upon which settler societies in North America rests. A Q&A will follow the talk. The book will be available for sale at the shul, signed by the author! Watch for more details in Narayever Net.

Volunteers are needed. We are appealing to volunteers who would like to participate in our Doors Open To-ronto on Sunday, May 26.  If you’re a bit of a history buff and love to talk to people about our unique Nara-yever history, we could use your talents! Volunteers are needed for about two and a half hours to give short talks on shul history (talking points provided), or to serve as ushers or greeters.
