GROWTH IN THE RENEWABLE ENERGY SECTOR HAS BEEN RETARDED BY LACK OF TRAINED PERSONNEL.

DEVELOPING SKILLS FOR GREEN ENERGY PRODUCTION In recent years, the Nigerian government has expressed plans to generate 40,000MW of electricity - with ten percent of the power generated within Nigeria to come from renewable energy sources - but there is still a considerable dearth of skill and technical savvy in the industry.

The repercussions are grave. Poorly trained engineers waste millions of naira in time and resources, simply by failing to achieve benchmarks and by delivering sub-standard output.

One quantifiable way to combat waste in the energy sector is capacity building. Adequate capacity building ensures that all personnel working in the renewable energy industry are properly prepared to deliver the best quality of service possible.

Training assists not just the public sector in capital and physical resource management, but also the private sector, which stands to benefit the most from ensuring that nationally certified engineers are responsible for valuable equipment.

The development of the renewable energy sector in particular has been significantly retarded by a lack of adequately trained personnel to design, develop and operate green energy systems that will provide sustainable, reliable power to all Nigerians.

Page 4: NAPTIN CERTIFIED RENEWABLE ENERGY TRAININGpnngroup.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/NAPTIN... · The NAPTIN certificate thereby guarantees the high service quality and output of renewable

To address this important issue, the National Training Power Institute (NAPTIN) has entered into a partnership with PNN, to provide renewable energy capacity building within Nigeria and to standardise training quality in Nigeria, as part of the federal government’s power reform programme. Under this collaboration, PNN and NAPTIN have developed a national training programme, to provide first-class training to Nigerians from all educational and professional backgrounds. All participants in the training programme will receive NAPTIN certification, enabling them to work anywhere in the power sector, globally.

The NAPTIN certification programme has been designed to ensure that all workers in the renewable energy field have received thorough, standardised training in all areas of the design, installation, operation and maintenance of renewable energy systems - particularly as pertains to the Nigerian environment. The NAPTIN certificate thereby guarantees the high service quality and output of renewable energy staff throughout Nigeria. PNN will work with the Renewable Energy Technology Institute (RETI), the implementation partner, to deliver a programme that meets international standards and consolidates training initiatives across Nigeria for all persons, establishments and institutions that will participate in the growing renewable energy sector.

ABOUT THE PARTNERS

THE NATIONAL POWER TRAINING INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA

The National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) was established on 23 March 2009 and commenced full operation in September 2009. The primary purpose for its establishment is to provide training for power sector personnel and coordinate training activities in the sector. In pursuit of this mandate, NAPTIN has taken over the management of seven existing regional training centres previously belonging to PHCN. NAPTIN has embarked on the development of world-class training programmes, which will require many international experts working alongside Nigerian experts. NAPTIN’s training focus will be along the following themes: technical (covering generation, transmission and distribution), management/computer application skills, commercial/financial, leadership/business and regulatory/reform courses.

PNN is a pan-African technology service provider that began operations out of Nigeria in 1998, playing a significant role in the development of the communications and power sectors of the economy through the provision of various services. PNN currently operates in nine African countries, namely Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, as well as the United Kingdom, and plans to expand its operations into 20 African countries by 2015. An accredited partner of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s renewable energy programme, PNN is collaborating with NAPTIN to fast track the renewable energy training component of the Institute’s mandate.

The Renewable Energy Technology Institute (RETI) promotes renewable energy through teaching, civic/public engagement, publishing, and partnerships with industry, government agencies, tertiary institutions and international/domestic organisations. RETI develops human capacity in all aspects of renewable energy, a vital resource for sustainable development. RETI’s goal is the improvement of the social and economic welfare of the citizenry by

relevant subject areas in the sciences, engineering, technology, business, management, law, arts and the humanities.
