Do More, Care More, Be More!:
Joan Hurd 2017 -18 President
Hello everyone! We are now officially in the holiday season. Things are busy for us all between Pilot endeavors, family and friends, it will get frantic, but fun. It is a time for us to be thankful for family and friends. To remember everyone who has suffered from hurricanes and other tragedies in our thoughts and prayers. If we can each do something kind each day, it will make this world a better place. This last month our club participated in the Community Safe Nights event sponsored by the Collier County Sheriff’s Department. This is an event held in 5 locations on three nights where the community comes together for an evening of fun and games. Our club provided helmet fittings for 3 of the locations to the tune of over 130 helmets! Each event was extremely successful. Kudos to the Collier County Sheriff’s Department. Then we attended a meeting of the Cape Coral Anchor Club where we gave a presentation about the Southern Scholarship Foundation and the Gresham Kite Scholarship House. Our presentation included Sue Lester, who gave information about the Southern Scholarship Foundation; Fran D’Alessandro, President of the Pilot Club of Fort Myers provided history of the Gresham Kite House; Joan Hurd, President of the Pilot Club of Naples provided application and scholarship information for incoming students, and then there were residents of the Gresham Kite House who provided
an overview of life in the House. Anchor Advisor Leigh Anne Page will organize a field trip to GKS House so the Anchors can tour the facility first hand. Love going to the Anchor meetings! What a great bunch of students! Now I am heading off to be with my family for Thanksgiving. My wish for each and everyone is to enjoy your families and be thankful for one another. Happy Thanksgiving!

Designing a Bedroom with Autism
in Mind: How to Make Your Child
Safe and Comfortable
When your child is on the autism
spectrum, it’s important to make sure
she’s safe and comfortable at all times.
That can be tricky when she’s at school
or under the care of someone else, but at
home, there are many things you can do
to help her enjoy her surroundings. Your
home is the best place to start when it
comes to making safety considerations,
and your child’s bedroom is key. When
it comes to helping her feel happy and
comfortable, you can do a lot without
going over your budget.
Every child on the autism spectrum has
different needs, so it’s important to think
about what your child’s needs
specifically. Many individuals are
sensitive to light and color, so the
arrangement and decor of the bedroom is
especially important. Also, consider your
child’s comfort level when it comes to
textures and fabrics; bedding should be
soft and tag-free, while the mattress
should be chosen for her specific needs.
Troubled sleepers often benefit greatly
from a mattress that doesn’t have much
recoil, as one that is too springy can
create a lot of movement at night.
Lighting should be conducive to reading
and relaxing, so you might want to have
lamps instead of relying solely on an
overhead light, or install a dimmer
switch.
Keep reading for tips on how to design a
bedroom for your child on the autism
spectrum.
Clear the Air Help your child get good sleep and
breathe easier by placing an air purifier
in her bedroom. Not only will it help
clear out allergens and promote good
health, but it will also add some quiet
white noise to the room, which can be
beneficial for little ones who need soft
sounds in order to relax or sleep well.
Choose the Right Colors
The right colors for your child may
depend on her personal preferences, but
in many cases, individuals who are
living with autism prefer calming shades
such as green or neutral colors that don’t
create overstimulation. Red, orange, and
bright white are often difficult for kids
on the autism spectrum to live with; talk
to your child’s doctor about the best hues
for a relaxing space, especially if she has
trouble sleeping.
Decorate with a Light Hand
You want your child’s bedroom to be
stimulating so she’ll feel engaged when
it comes to playing and learning, but too
much in one space can easily become
overwhelming. Keep this in mind when
hanging posters or artwork, and create
areas that are easy to organize to avoid
clutter. Make different stations for
puzzles, games, blocks, and art supplies
so she can put things away and find them
easily the next time.
Light It Carefully
Your child’s preferences when it comes
to lighting and color may vary greatly
from another child’s, so think carefully
about what will help her feel the most
comfortable. You might add lamps so
the intensity of the light can be changed,
or install colored lights for a relaxing
effect. It’s often a good idea to reduce
glare, especially on hardwood floors; this
can be done with a soft throw rug.
Natural light is wonderful, so open the
curtains when you can and stay away
from fluorescents, which can be
detrimental to children with sensory
processing issues.
Creating the perfect bedroom for your
child’s needs doesn’t have to be stressful
or expensive. With some careful
planning, you can turn any room into a
safe haven for your loved one and help
her find the best ways to learn, play, and
grow.

Bikes for Tykes is celebrating 30 years
of changing lives one bike at a time.
Since the Pilot Club of Naples partnered
with Bikes for Tykes, the helmet fitting
program has increased beyond our
expectations. The Bikes for Tykes
founder, Skip Riffle and his team of
volunteers are very special people who
care about children and adults who want
or need a bike. Founders below at the
celebration.
Fitting helmets is serious business to
Joan Hurd, President of the Pilot Club of
Naples. She left her post fitting when
she saw this bike rider without a helmet.
She ran out to tell him how important it
is to always wear a helmet. He resisted,
but later came to our table to be fitted
with his new helmet.

And then there was Tony
Rosemarie Kirk, Pauline Mansour and
Sue Lester at Collier County Sheriff’s

was no time to take photos or stop for a
minute. 3 locations with 3 more great
