MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER

The month started out with our visit to San Rafael Lodge for the President's Dinner, we met with Chuck Nolan and his lady Ginger, they both shared their pins and current information with us. San Rafael as always were gracious hosts.

I would also like to mention that our lodge received a generous donation from the San Francisco lodge to assist our fire victims. Thank you San Francisco.

This will be my almost last ER message to our members. In next month's March newsletter my message will be focusing on the new officers, Installation information and members who will receive awards for the 2017-18 year. Along with a few new updates and current information.

So.... this will be my farewell message to the troops, ha! 2017-18 has been an exciting and a delightful year for myself and the First Dude Dave. It has been an honor to be the Exalted Ruler of #832. My year started off by receiving my very own set of ER jewels from PER Bus Langdon and continued with support from the members. Thank you all.

FROM YOUR LODGE SECRETARY

Hello Members!

We only have two more months of this Elk year. How fast it has gone! That means dues notices will be coming out at the end of February or early March. This is also the time of year we start forming our Officer team for next year. We have many committees to fill. Anyone interested in getting involved in the Lodge and getting on a committee or chairing an event, please let us know. We have acquired many new members this year and would love to see them involved in the

workings of the Lodge. Any new ideas also bring them to the meetings. This month the House, Hall and Trustee meetings will be held on February 20th starting at 5:00 p.m. That evening we are going to have a solar presentation at 4:00 p.m. as well. Hope many of you will come.

At our last meeting on January 17th, we initiated twelve new members: Mark Fowler, James Davenport, Roger Schmidt, Erik Wickstron, Robert Newton, Michael Campbell, John Callanan, Michael Mullet, William Edmister, Ian Cordle, Dennis Schelling, and Teresa Vandel. We also have a new member who transferred from Petaluma Lodge #901, Clyde Schulz DDS. Welcome to all of them!!

Thank you to EVERYONE for all your hard work and attendance to a really awesome Crab Feed this year, this event is one of our best and needed fundraisers each year.

As always, any membership concerns, please do not hesitate to see me.

Fraternally, Judy Fisher - Lodge Secretary

Activities Report February 2018 This is a busy lodge. Crab Feed, Chinese New Year, Valentine BBQ, Dinner with Dino. And we are back to our Taco Tuesdays

and Friday Night BBQ's!

New Year's Eve 2017: Approximately 63 in attendance on 12/31/17. Many thanks to our staff for transforming the Club Room

into a festive Holiday room, the lights and trees were beautiful. The New Year's Eve tables were outstanding, thanks to Linda

Rae, Betty Sollows, Judy Fisher, myself with Vivian McFarland doing the flowers. Members attending New York NYE all

commented on the tables. Also, thanks going to the kitchen staff as always the food was a delight, and I must comment on my

birthday "Flip Flop" cake, I loved it, thank you Stephanie. Gay took charge of the music, bar and the NY Ball drop, it was a

nice start to 2018. However, it was also over early Dave and I were home on the sofa at 10:30. It was a Happy New Year and an

early Good Night.

Crab Feed: 1/13/18 This year we had about 220 in attendance. Our chairmen Tim Horton, with his team Jen, Kathleen and

our cook Jerry did a great job in the kitchen, our MC and auctioneer Dave Bridges, Sholly and the Orris's had a fantastic

silent auction. Thank you to all our Crab Feed volunteers we had many hard workers doing tables, decorating with balloons,

donating desserts, selling raffle tickets, a few members running to and from the store, and our Boy Scouts for serving. Charlie

Baker kept the room jumping many folks were singing and dancing and enjoying the evening. The dessert auction, the silent

auction, the live auction and the raffle were all very successful. At this time I do not have the proceeds from this year. Thanks

again to our 2018 awesome chairmen and more thanks to those attending.

A note from Lodge Activities: As some of you may know I have decided not to continue as Lodge Activities. I have had the

pleasure of serving as Lodge Activities for the last 7 years, and I have enjoyed and will miss doing activities. However, the time

has come for me to step aside and allow other members with new and fresh ideas to participate. There are many parts to

Elkdom and Lodge Activities is an important one, both Community and Lodge Activities help to make for a happy healthy

lodge. Please continue to support the new activities person. Our current activities are all set for February and March we will

need some new thoughts starting in April. Recently, since I decided to step out I was asked what were my favorite events from

the last seven years? Without a doubt for me it was the "TEA", "Casablanca Night" and the "Dead Men Don't Get Dessert" our

Murder Mystery. I am guessing the kitchen will not miss some of my Ghoulish Halloween menus or the Purple Pig Night with

chocolate covered bacon also the bartenders will be delighted they don't need to deal with my crazy event cocktails. I do thank

and love the kitchen staff and bartenders for supporting my unique requests. Anyway, I had fun and hope you did also. I will

not be going far, I will be around the lodge to help, assist and support all the new events and hopefully continue to chair the

TEA. If you are interested in Activities please contact our soon to be new ER or the office.

Save the Dates: Chinese New Year's: 1/31/18, Valentine BBQ: 2/9/18 and Italian Night with Dean-O-Holics: 2/23/18

Here’s a glimpse of some of the fun that was had at this year’s Crab Feed. Thanks if you came! You missed out if you didn’t…

Page 8: NAPA ELKS LODGE #832 Grapevine Express2017-1018. Remembering the lyrics from a Frank Sinatra song..."It was a very good Year." All my best to the incoming ER and Officers. Fraternally,

Right: Thanks to one of the Grant’s Monica

Shepard received for the Veteran’s at the

Vet’s Home in Yountville we provided them

with this trunk full of robes, warm pj’s and

socks. This was a fourth of what we

received and we will be spreading more of

this grant out during the upcoming year.

The Elks Ear Well, dang Batman, I think we have set a new standard for Crab Feeds!! Not only did we have beaucoup (That's French for

damn that's a lot!) volunteers but more gift baskets than the Easter Bunny. I can't begin to list everyone, but look under Elk

Heroes and you will find them. The only problem was the Charlie Baker Band was too good! He made you get up and dance

when you knew better. The next morning said, I told you so. Some members not only donated baskets but tried to outbid you

to get them back, thank goodness for the ATM. Not to mention any names but Dave outbid me on the dessert auction then

wouldn't share, so I had to bend his crab pick!! Good job everybody.

Our Lecturing Knight, Monica Shepard, is out to get all our moneys back from Grand Lodge. Once we meet our per capita for

E.N.F. (which is the Elks National Fund) we can apply for many different Grants. She as of now has been approved for the

Freedom Grant for $2000 for Veterans, the Beacon Grant for $2000 for the Crosswalk Church Food Pantry Fund, and the

Anniversary Grant for $1000. I hope Grand Lodge doesn't catch on, they are sending us a lot more than we are sending them.

As a member enjoy your Lodge, introduce yourself to other members. We are proud to have the reputation of being one of the

friendliest lodges. One of your best items to give is your time.

The best is yet to come!

SPRING CLEANING WORK WEEKEND - APRIL 14th & 15th

Now is the time for ALL good members to come to the aid of their Lodge…

We are asking each member to donate 2 HOURS of labor OR $20 and we will have

someone do the work for you.

We have lots of indoor and outdoor projects to improve our facility!

Attention Elk Members It has been brought to my attention that we might need to inform our members of new rules and reinforce some old ones.

First: There have been some complaints regarding foul language in the lodge especially in the bar. We are asking our members to please refrain from

using cuss words or the "F" bomb in the lodge. I know sometimes these words can be a habit or just slip out of the mouth and they are not meant to

offend, however, sadly they do. We will be connecting a fine to those who forget.

Second: We have always had the NO SMOKING signs around; these signs will continued to be displayed along with NO Marijuana. Marijuana may

be legal some places but not at the Napa Elks.

Third: We will be posting a sign at the front doors. The sign will read NO ALCOHOL BEYOND THIS POINT that point will be the front doors.

This will help to discourage folks from taking drinks or alcohol out to the front of the building, front patio, the steps and the parking lot. We prefer

drinks remain in the lodge or outside in the back area.

Forth: We have always welcomed guests, please remember if you bring a guest to the lodge the members is responsible for his/her guests. Guest will

need to sign the guest book and list their sponsor/member, guests will need to arrive with their sponsor, and leave at the same time. If these guests are

visiting consistently (weekly/monthly) after three visit they will be asked to join the lodge. We are happy the guests like the lodge and they want to

participate, and we welcome new members. However, the lodge and lodge activities are geared to members.

Please remember these are not my rules most of the rules above have been around for many years and do not include spouses. Please help to keep

our lodge the active, fun, and a safe place to enjoy and visit.

Fraternally, Sandy Silveira- ER

VETERAN’S CORNER Leo Garfield, Associate Member Napa Lodge, PER Richmond Lodge

Dave Silveira was born in Concord, California, and attended schools in Alamo and Danville. As a young teenager, before graduation, he was

already learning his trade from his father who worked in construction. Dave spent many hours on construction sites learning about tractors

and other construction equipment. When he graduated from high school at age 18, he was immediately accepted into the Operation

Engineer’s Union. When he enlisted for a 3-year tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he was immediately transferred to the Corp of Engineers.

After Basic Training, he took additional instruction on the D-8 Tractor. His Unit was transferred to Leon, France, which was to be his home

base. Paris was a short drive from Leon so Dave spent many of his off-duty hours in that beautiful city touring famous statues, visiting

museums, and attending concerts. Oh sure, I’ve no reason to doubt that. One of the Unit’s first jobs was to build six airplane hangers to

house several French Reconnaissance planes. Upon final inspection, someone should have measured a Recon plane as the hangers were to

short for the planes. Dave also had enough time to do some real soldiering. He disliked guard duty especially since he found that their guard

rifles had no ammunition. This didn’t set well with his comrades after one of them was murdered on duty by having his throat cut. Dave

never determined if the crime was solved. He got along fairly well with his superiors except for one. He had a Sergeant that expected spit

and polish. It seemed more than silly to stand at inspection, change into your work clothes, climb up on your tractor, and push dirt all day.

Of course all soldiers train with firearms, and tractor-driving Dave was no exception. On one occasion while lying on his stomach with an M-

1, looking at the target, a rabbit appeared on top of the dirt mound. Sharpshooter Dave took him out. All laughed except the Captain and

the rabbit. Dave did 25 pushups. He was involved in participating in what may be the longest military caravan known. The Unit drove

construction equipment via truck from Bremerhaven, Germany, to Leon, France. What a project, moving heavy equipment for such a

distance. Back to his Army training, Dave could have been injured, or maybe killed during a hand grenade exercise. The soldier next to him

threw a live grenade, and instead of it moving forward it went sideways in a pit next to Dave and exploded with no injuries.

Dave discharged in 1963, and was back in the Operating Engineers and Construction business. He and Sandy have been married 47 years,

and Dave has been an Elk for 15. He is now serving on the Board of Trustees. Thanks for the interview, Dave, thanks for your Elk’s Time,

thanks for your sense of humor, and a special thanks for your, “time on the tractor for our country.”
