About the study….
This study focuses upon the ability to discern the transformational changes to the traditional libraries to digital environment.
It covers a comparative study of traditional and digital libraries.
Analyze the challenges facing by the traditional libraries
Introduction to a library
LIBRARY
Library is a building in which collections of books, CDs, newspapers, etc. are kept for people to read, study or borrow

Traditional Libraries
Traditional Libraries are commonly referred as Public libraries which provide access to physical resource materials of general interest and are open to everyone
This libraries act as a centre of information and has a pivotal role to play in promoting
sustainable development in the society.
Future of Traditional Libraries
Recent global developments in communications technology, digital media, network services, and electronic commerce present transformational innovative opportunities and fundamental challenges for traditional libraries. For the two decades Print medium is increasingly giving way to the electronic form of materials.
Factors affecting to the growth of traditional libraries
The way people access information Convergence of computer technology and
telecommunication Development of better information storage search
and retrieval systems Free and open access information Any time anywhere access Availability in different formats Cost effectiveness

Digital Libraries
A digital library (also referred to as electronic library or virtual library) is a focused collection of digital objects that can include text, visual material, audio material, video material, stored as electronic media formats (as opposed to print, micro form, or other media), along with means for organizing, storing, and retrieving the files and media contained in the library collection.
History of DL
DL projects started in the early 1990s.
E.g. Vatican Library Accessible Worldwide and Alexandria DL.
The term digital libraries were first popularized by the NSF/DARPA/NASA Digital Libraries Initiative in 1994
Characters
Digital libraries are the digital face of traditional libraries
Electronic content management and dissemination
provides any form or format of knowledge Computer Networked and Organised
Advantages of Digital Libraries over Traditional Libraries
No physical boundary - In Any formats Electronical Information retrieval Availability and easy access Multiple accesses Preservation and conservation Effective Storage and dissemination Anytime anywhere anyone access
Future of Digital Libraries
The entire world is going online. Large scale digitization projects are
underway at Google, the Million Book Project, and Internet Archive.
In future, libraries will reinvent themselves by perfecting the path that they have now begun. They will become more of a fusion of physical and virtual realms.
Comparative study of traditional and digital libraryCharacter Traditional Libraries Digital Libraries1. Collection Print collection All resources in
digital form
2. Status Stable, with slow evolution
Dynamic and ephemeral
3. Object Relations Individual objects not directly linked with each other
Multi-media and fractal objects
4. Metadata Structure Flat structure with minimal contextual metadata
Scaffolding of data structures and richer contextual metadata
5. Contents Scholarly content with validation process
More than scholarly content with various validation processes
Character Traditional Libraries Digital Libraries
6. Access Points Limited access points and centralized management
Unlimited access points, distributed collections and access control
7. Organization The physical and logical organization correlated
The physical and logical organization may be virtually
8. Access to document Free and universal access Free as well as fee based
9. Size of library collections
Limited by physical size of library
Unlimited collection
10. Interaction one-way, loosely coupled (slow) interaction
Two-way communication with tight, fast interaction
Comparative study of traditional and digital library
The summary….
Conclusions
Digital libraries are not fundamentally different from 'traditional' libraries; either in the purposes of existing, or in the services provided.
The main differences come down to how the services are provided, and how collections are stored and managed.
The emphasis in roles of knowledge professional will likely to change in accordance with needs of the user community and the level of technological sophistication.
