Scarves are a must have for every Season - they're inexpensive, available in a wide variety of styles, colors and patterns, and they'll fit no matter how many Pumpkin Spice Lattes you throw back. Oh, and all the celebrities are wearing them (not thatwe care about that, though, right?). Scarves are the ultimate day to night accessory! From wrapping up a bad hair day toadding a little flair to your simple jeans and tank, to elegantly using as a wrap with a cocktail dress, scarves provide an array ofsass-it-up options.

You've picked out a scarf (from PurseLove of course!) that's just the right color scheme for your winter skin, just the right printfor your wardrobe, just the right weight for your climate. Now what? Are you standing in front of the mirror in various self-inflicted headlocks as you attempt to tie it around your neck just right? Worry not!

5 Basic Scarf Tying Techniques1. The No-Tie Tie. You can't get any easier than this: Just drape it around your neck, and viola! When to do it: When you'rewearing a necklace, when you want to break up a mono-chromoatic outfit with a long splash of color, or add a solidcolored scarf to a patterned top.

2. The Simple Knot Tie. It's so easy you haven't even thought about it yet. Just drape it around your neck and tie it in abasic knot - like the first step of tying a bow - that hits just above your bra cups. Rearrange the tails a little so that theyfall one in front of the other (as opposed to side-by-side), cleverly hiding the simplicity of the knot. When to do it: To spiceup a yoga pants & t-shirt ensemble, with a v-neck tee.

3. The Backwards Wrap Tie. Drape your scarf backwards around your neck, so that the center is flush against your throat and thetails fall down your back. Take the tail falling over your right shoulder blade and bring it across your back and over your left shoulderso it falls down the left side of your chest, and repeat with the opposite side. Keep it wrapped tightly for a polished look, or slouch itdown a bit for a more relaxed vibe – letting it frame a gorgeous necklace or choker. When to do it: Instead of a statement necklaceif it is up against your neck, or to cover up a spit-up stain on your shoulder.

4. The Backwards Wrap + Knot Tie. Complete look # 3, then add look # 2. Presto Scarf-o! When to do it: Under a buttoned up blazerwith the tails hanging out past the hem, when your scarf is super long.

5. Button-Hole Tie. Fold your scarf in half (making it half as long) and drape it around your neck so that you have both tails hangingover one shoulder and the folded center over the other. The Neckerchief Tie

The neckerchief tie is shown to the left. This is a full body tie that looks great as shown or under a jacket or loose shirt.Take the back of the scarf where the fabric is the widest and put this against the front of your body.Wrap each end of the scarf around the back of your neck. Pass the ends behind your neck and bring to the from where you can makea simple knot. A double knot will ensure the scarf does not come undone.

Bow Ties

Both show scarves tied with a bow tie. The red scarf is a looser bow while the yellow scarf has a smaller bow on a slight angle.Experiment a little and pull the bow as tight and as high as you prefer. A bow tie can also look great looser, not so close to the neck.

Long Tie Scarf - How To

You can create a soft-looking effect with your scarf reminiscent of a man's necktie. It makes for a beautiful accent to a simple suit, dress orblouse / slacks combination. The technique is simple, but highly effective.

Scarf Style Needed: Rectangular (Oblong) Scarf (at least 80 cm long) Tying the Scarf:Take an oblong scarf and fold it twice lengthwise to create an "S" fold. Drape the folded scarf around your neck and allow the ends to

hang down your front. Pull one end of the scarf down so that it is slightly longer than the other. Wrap the longer end around the shorter oneand tie a loose knot.

Pull the unknotted end of the scarf to adjust the length as desired. The finished look is soft, yet professional. It is suited for wear invirtually any setting.

Neck Wrap - How To

This is a smart, professional style of scarf-tying that makes for a simple accent to a business-suit, or elegant pant/skirt ensemble. This stylelooks best with a blouse bearing a high collar.

Scarf Style Needed: Rectangular (Oblong) Scarf (at least 80 cm long) Tying the Scarf:Take the oblong scarf and fold it twice to create an "S" fold. Drape the scarf around your neck so that the ends hang down the back.

Cross the ends in the back and bring them back to the front. Loop the one end around the other in front and pull the ends back around to theback once more.

Knot the ends at the back of the neck and tuck any remaining length down the back of the blouse beneath the collar. The finished look issleek and sophisticated.

Bandana Wrap Scarf - How To

This is a method of scarf wearing that is traditionally done using a bandana (or small scarf). It provides a neat-looking result and looksespecially good worn with a blouse and skirt/pants with the blouse collar turned up.

Scarf Style Needed: Square Scarf (120 cm square) Tying the Scarf:Fold the square scarf diagonally from corner to corner. Turn down the folded edge to create a fold approximately 1 to 1-1/2 inches wide.

Continue folding this edge again and again until approximately ½ of the triangle is left free.Drape the folded scarf around the neck so that the turned down side is against the neck and the coiled ends are hanging in front of the

body. Tie the two coiled ends together and knot them, leaving as much of the coiled ends hanging free as possible. This style of tying creates a shawl effect on the shoulders and a tie effect in front. It is casual, but sophisticated, and is perfect for

afternoon lunches and daywear in general.

This scarf-tying style creates a very soft, feminine-looking accent to a suit, and is equally purposed for concealing décolletage in low-cut,jacketed dresses, and blouses.

Traditional Belt Scarf - How To

There are times when you want to add a little "twist" to the traditional look of a belted slacks/blouse/jacket ensemble. By replacing the usualbelt with a scarf in a complimentary color/pattern, you can create a flattering, and chic look.

Scarf Style Needed: Rectangular (oblong) Scarf (120 cm long) Tying the Scarf: Fold the rectangular scarf in half, twice, lengthwise.Thread the scarf through the belt loops of the pants (just as you would a traditional belt) and pull the belt to make sure the ends are even

when fully threaded. Then, loop the scarf ends around one another and thread one end back through the loops on each side of the pants untilthey meet in the back. At the back of the pants, tie the ends of the scarf into a knot and tuck any remaining ends back under the wrapped

scarf. The result is a colorful alternative to the traditional belt. This method can also be used as a belt-style tying of a scarf for simpledresses, and works well when tied in this manner at the hips.

Side-Knotted Belt Scarf - How To

Sometimes you need something to dress-up that simple little dress you're wearing, but you don't want (or don't have) a regular belt thatwould be appropriate. This is the perfect time to put a scarf to use.

Scarf Style Needed: Rectangular (oblong) Scarf (80 cm long) Tying the Scarf:Fold the rectangular scarf twice lengthwise to form an "S" fold. Wrap the folded scarf around your hips and tie the scarf at the side with

either a knot or a small bow. Adjust the unknotted side of the scarf to expand it slightly. The result is a soft looking belted effect that makes even the simplest dress just a touch more festive.

Belt Sash

1. Fold a long (oblong) scarf like an accordion.2. Wrap it around your waist and use a simple knot to secure it in the middle.

Or , put it through your belt loops as shown. This is a great way to add sass to any pair of trousers! You can take this a step further and twist the tails around each other, roll into a circle and pop the ends through the center of

your circle – now you have a flower/rosebud finish to your belt – looks so cute on your hip!

Hat Sash Belt

1. Fold a small square fashion scarf on the bias2. Place through two belt loops

3. Tie a knot and go!

Halter-Style Blouse - How To

You can wear a scarf as a halter - style blouse. This is an inventive use for a scarf that is both bold and flattering. Worn this way, the scarfadds an elegant touch to a pant suit, or skirt suit, and can allow you to take your suit from a day at the office to a nice dinner date, with a

moment's adjustment.Scarf Style Needed: Square Scarf (at least 120 cm square) Tying the Scarf:

Take the square scarf and tie a small knot in the center of the scarf. If the scarf has an apparent front and back, make sure the knot istied on the back side of the scarf. Next, fold the scarf diagonally so that the knot is on the inside of the fold.

Wrap the folded edge of the scarf around your waist, letting the unfolded points hang down. Tie the folded corners at your back. Raise theloose corners of the scarf up along the torso and pass one around each side of the neck. Knot these corners at the back of the neck. Adjust

the positioning of the scarf so that the knot is unseen. The resulting halter/blouse has a shirred look with gathering at the waist, which flatters slim figures, and helps to balance the proportions

of pear-shaped figures.

HALTER STYLE

Make a halter-style top with a big square scarf. Fold it into a triangle, then tie a knot in the middle. Press this knot against the baseof your nape, then secure the loose ends around your neck. This forms the halter-neck of your blouse. To finish, wrap the triangle

base around your waist, knotting it in the middle of your back.

BRACING IT – using jewelry

A combination between a handkerchief and halter-style top, this method cleverly uses a chunky necklace as the loop to hold your top together. Fold a square scarf into a triangleand wrap it around your body, securing it in the middle of your back. Next create two gathers, from the top of the bodice, pinching two ends through the base of a chunky

necklace, knotting them.

TOGAPerfect for poolside or dinner parties, you'll need a very big square scarf (preferably 90cm by 90cm) for this. Fold one corner over,

almost three quarters into the length of the scarf. That diagonal corner forms the toga portion of your top. Next, with the looseends, drape it across the other shoulder, securing it at your shoulder blades. Bring the remaining two ends together and secure it at

the side of your waist.

Page 13: Nancy Linker – – Monclova, Ohio …purselove.com/shop/downloads/Scarf_Tying_Methods.pdf · 2013-11-22 · The Backwards Wrap Tie. Drape your scarf backwards around your neck,

Skirt Wrap - How To

You can wear your scarf as a sarong-type skirt. Worn this way, it makes an elegant cover-up at the poolside or the beach. The light-weightfabric of most scarves makes it cool and comfortable, and the draping effect is very flattering to women who are uncomfortable showing their

thighs and hips in a bathing suit.Scarf Style Needed: Square Scarf (at least 120 cm square) Tying the Scarf:

Fold the square scarf diagonally to form a large triangle. Additionally, following the pattern of the scarf (if any) turn down the folded edgeto create the appearance of a "belt". If the scarf design includes a border, it may be possible to position one of the layers of the fold to

incorporate this border into the faux "belt".Wrap the folded scarf around the waist and knot it twice to secure it. Fold the ends from the knot in and under the knot so that they lay

flat under the edges of the scarf and cover any space found there. This usually looks most flattering with the knot at the side, but you mayslide the scarf to position the knot wherever you please.

Sarong with Two Scarves

Use two scarves. First wrap one around your waist, knotting it at the side. Then take another scarf, preferably with a contrasting trim, and wrap it over, this time fastening the knotover one hip. You can wear the skirted look over a swimsuit to the pool, as shown here, or pair it with a sleeveless turtleneck and black tights and wear it to the office or a party.

DRESSES WITH LARGER SCARVES

Envelope DressStep 1: Hold the sarong vertically across your back.Step 2: Tie a knot with the two ends over the bust.Step 3: Grab the other ends lying on the floor behind you and bring the ends through your legs to your midsection.Step 4: With the ends in your hands tie a knot in the middle of your back.

Sarong and Sarong Dress

One of the most popular ways to wear a sarong is to create a sarong dress. Tying your sarong as a dress is really simple. That is thegreat thing about sarongs, you can wear them many different ways. Here are 3 simple steps for tying your sarong has a Traditional

Gather all your items - wallet, key ring, phone and all - in the middle of a scarf, then tie the two opposing ends together. Next, tie theother two loose ends together, overlapping the first tied knot and securing it higher, creating a loop for your shoulders to go through.Voila, a new bag.

Handbag AccessoryTie your favorite scarf around the handle of your handbag. This simple trick works well with just about any style of handbag, whetheryou're dressing for work or the weekend. Something silky and sophisticated works especially well with a business suit, while justabout anything goes with jeans, shorts or a sundress.

Don’t Pitch the Purse - Wrap the “Worn” Handles of a Handbag

Take a very long and tough oblong shaped scarf and pull it through the metal link on one end of the handle until it reached themiddle of the scarf (so both ends were equal lengths. Then double wrapped the handle by wrapping one end around, then

overlapping it by wrapping the other end around until you get the entire handle covered. At the end tie a secure and attractive knotto hold the scarf in place and create the decorative scarf tie ends as shown. None of this gets in the way of opening or closing the

bag. The handle is now reinforced and no one can see that it is broken under the fabric. This can take a lot of fabric. The scarf used is76 ” long and 18″ wide!

Gift Wrapping!

Tip One: Iron the scarf. It makes for a much neater presentation and easier folding. Use a low setting if you’re unsure of the material.

Tip Two: If you can choose the box, square boxes work best.

Tip Three: A knot or bow that may look good on one shape may not work on another. But a tie that I do use often is the one shown. To achieve it, tie catty-corner ends together, then tie the other 2 directly on top of it. Like so!

Wine Bottle Gift Wrap

Ever wonder what to do when presenting a bottle of wine as a hostess gift? Or how to package it as a wedding shower present forthe bride or even as lavish party favors for guests? Try furoshiki. It’s the Japanese art of wrapping colorful fabric squares aroundpackages. Your gift recipient will surely be impressed! Traditionally used for wrapping Japanese lunch boxes called Bento boxes, furoshiki has also become very popular for packaging gifts. The fabric wraps are chosen for their interesting patterns and textures tocreate a stunning gift presentation. Ready to wrap your wine bottle, Japanese style? Just follow these simple directions:1. Prepare your materials. For our project, we used a 20 x 20 inch silk scarf with an elegant floral print, and a medium-sized winebottle measuring about 8 inches tall and 2½ inches in diameter.2. Start the wrap - Stand the bottle upright in the center of the cloth. Draw opposite corners of the scarf upwards and knot themonce above the bottle.3. Create a loop - Make a second knot above the first, but leaving some excess fabric to form an open loop.4. Secure the loop - Double the knot above the open loop to make sure it doesn’t slip loose.5. Test the knots - Check that the knots are secure by carefully lifting the package, supporting the bottle with your free hand(remember, it isn’t fully wrapped yet!).6. Continue to make the wrap - Now, gather the remaining free corners of the scarf in your hands. Hint: The silk fabric can be trickyto handle! So, you may want an extra pair of hands to help with the succeeding steps.7. Do a cross over - Cross the two ends of fabric around one side of the bottle. Then, extend them to the other side.8. Tie the wrap in place - On the opposite side of the bottle, draw the fabric snugly around it to create a neat package.9. Prepare for the finishing touch - Cross the ends over one another and check that there are equal lengths of fabric on each side.10. Create a pretty bow - Complete the gift presentation by double-knotting the fabric into an elegant bow. And there you have it! Awonderful wine-bottle gift artfully packaged furoshiki style!
