PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you have had a restful Easter and enjoyed watching some of the Commonwealth

Games. I am very pleased to be back after working in a Regional Position overseeing STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Maths) in our area. I mentioned to staff and students that this role involved me visiting other schools in

the region. All facets of our school compare very favourably with others in the region. We should be very proud of our

achievements.

A number of staffing changes are in effect this term. Mark Freeman has relocated to be Deputy Principal at Kingaroy

State High School. I know you will join with me in wishing Mark all the best in this new role.

Linda Stern will replace Mark as Acting Deputy Principal

John Lofthouse is on leave and Mary-Anne Zahnow replaces him as Acting Deputy Principal

Margaret Mangan-Walsh is on leave as HOSES and is replaced by Rachael Cooper

Sheryl Wolski continues as Acting Maths Head of Department.

We welcome two new teachers on staff.

Albie Ussher will be teaching in the Maths, Science and HPE

Tim Walsh in the English and Drama area

My mantra for the year is a bit late.

I have challenged the school body to follow the 3P’s being Positive, Patient and Persistent.

This could be particularly useful to students after receiving their interim reports last Friday. A reminder that the Parent

Teacher Interview afternoon is on next Monday 30th April in the school hall. Bookings have opened, so can I encourage

parents to book in early to get your desired time slot.

I also encourage students to attend the ANZAC March on Wednesday. This is a small way that we, as a school, can show

our respect for an important part of our history. The March starts at 8.45am and we meet at Nanango Motors at 8.30am.

I will report on the school ceremony in the next newsletter. Please let me know of how our school is represented at other

town services. A photo for our Facebook page would be great as well.

Great state. Great opportunity.

Well done to a number of our dance students who performed in the Cinderella performance at the Empire Theatre over the holidays. A lot of hard work in rehearsals ensured this was a very professional performance.

SPORT

Congratulations to the following students who were successful in gaining entry into Wide Bay Teams:

Lilly Railton-Thompson - Softball

Bree Pogany - Swimming, Open Girls Football

Jack Sullivan - Open Rugby League

James Packer - U15 AFL

Ebony Otto - U15 AFL

Taylah Kidman - U15 Netball

I look forward to the school Cross Country this Thursday in Period 4. It is always a great afternoon. Nanango has a strong tradition in this area and I expect this year to be no different. Can any boys beat Mr Snow this year? Parents are very welcome to attend.

Congratulations to Belinda Spencer who is a Youth Member of the 2018 Youth Parliament. She has the portfolio of Science, Technology and Innovation. She will contribute impressively in this area. I look forward to hearing about this great opportunity at the next parade.

Good luck to the HPV Team competing in a new competition in Bundaberg this weekend. Thank you to Mrs Flood and Mr Holznagel for accompanying this team.

While I have been away I have noted the great things happening at Nanango. These have included NAPLAN 2017 results, Year 12 results and the positive school review outcomes.

I expect to once again see the outstanding outcomes in 2018.

NAPLAN 2018

Welcome to Term 2! This term sees the Year 7 and Year 9 students completing their NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN this year is scheduled for:

To give you some background - NAPLAN gives a snapshot of how children are performing in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. It complements other effective classroom assessment and reporting practices. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace ongoing assessments made by the teachers about student performance. Parents and Guardians of Year 7 and 9 students keep your eyes peeled as further information will be coming home

over the next few weeks regarding these days.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Yours in NAPLAN,

Mrs Zahnow

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / CARERS /GUARDIANS OF YEAR 10 STUDENTS

During Term 1 we are hoping to see all Year 10 students logging into www.usi.gov.au to create their Unique Student

Identifier. On this site you will also be able to get further explanations about the purpose of the USI. I am asking all

parents to assist your student with this at home over the next couple of weeks and to then supply the school with the

USI number.

All you need to do is:

Log into www.usi.gov.au

Have a Birth Certificate or Medicare Card to use as the ID

Click on: I am a student and I want to create a USI

Then follow the prompts

When you have created your student’s Unique Student Identifier number, please email it to [email protected] along

with the name of the student it belongs to or send it to school with your student. This will allow the school to add this

to their student files.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

SENIOR GEOGRAPHY

Senior Geography students travelled to Maroochydore on Thursday 19 April to brave the elements and explore strategies used to manage natural hazards. They gathered information and saw first-hand what hard and soft engineering practices are being used to control and minimise the impact of flooding and coastal erosion. This was following by lunch and a swim at Mooloolaba.
