    Nanaimo Roundtable MeetingSummary NotesTime: Wednesday, October 28

    th, 2015, 7:00 PM10:00 PM

    Location: Building 255Room 165, Nanaimo Campus, Vancouver Island University

    SESSION ONE: INTRODUCTIONThe meeting started with an introduction of BCCIC and self-introductions of participants & their organizations.21 participants attended the Roundtable Meeting,representing sustainable focuses mainly in the areas of:

    Poverty

    Health & Wellbeing Education Sustainable Cities & Communities Environmental Issues Clean Energy Peace & Justice

    SESSION TWO: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALSA brief introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was provided, followed by a brief Q&A.Highlights of SDGs:

    Inspiring, but challenging People, planet, prosperity, peace & justice, partnership

    Universal: apply to any country Inter-links among all goals: in order to achieve a certain goal, one needs to address all of the 17 goals

    SESSION THREE: LINKAGE & NETWORKING &REFLECTIONLINKAGE: all of the participants were asked to connect whatthey are doing towards certain SDGs by writing down theirwork on sticky notes and putting those notes on the certainareas of the board which was divided into 17 areas. Eacharea represented one SDG.NETWORKING: during the process, participants were activelyengaged in networking.

    REFLECTION: participants shared their reflections of theirlinkage process.

    SESSION FOUR: GROUP DISCUSSIONCALL ON ACTIONSGROUP ONE

    Use SDGs as a means of connecting everyone by using Electronic Listerv; Organize events & workshops around one goal to make related actions manageable

    GROUP TWO Start with educating what BCCIC is so that organizations with certain needs of

    funds/networks/resources could come to BCCIC for information;

    Use SDGs to collaborate with universities byengaging students to work on different researchprojects on each goal;

    Establish HOPE through SDGs by creating a websitewhich connects people;

    Educate kids at primary level about SDGs;

    GROUP THREEUsing these goals for the usage of connecting people:

    Utilize SDGs as a guideline for the development of amajor website;

    Recognize the important roles of universities acting as hubs & leaders in sustainable initiatives, aswell as the collaborations among universities working towards SDGs;

    Engage students to develop thesis topics on certain goals; Encourage & share micro-level ideas/practices

    towards sustainable development; Continue local networking on the island through

    regular meetings

    GROUP FOUR Address human rights and empower people before

    pursuing any development Engage students in the sustainable development

    actions Utilize SDGs to create networking opportunities

    among different groups Be motivated through a supportive environment initiated by SDGs

    In the End: A brainstorming of a name for the alliance of organizations on the Island working towards SDGs
