Well, here we are another year and what a great year it is going to be. We have lots of exciting classes planned by our Program Committee. Our Retreat is in November, the June picnic will be at Transfer beach in June and of course our 30 th Anniversary will be in October 2014. We are currently getting suggestions for our 30 th celebration and I am sure we will come up with something that will be a lot of fun and exciting. There is a suggestion that we do something each month starting in January and I think that is a wonderful idea and then we can cap it off in October 2014. Our first meeting was held at our new venue, The Curling Club, and the responses received were quite positive. The elevator will be a great help for those who have mobility issues. We have proper fire exits and plenty of really nice washrooms. It is nice to have a storage area where we can keep all our library books and kitchen supplies, and of course we have the view of the curling rink. We have a few changes that need to be implemented and we will be trying something new with Show and Share. I know that some of you were unable to see the quilts, but it was nice that we could display them at the back for all to see them. Maybe we can come up with some way to display some of them on our frames…there have been several suggestions regarding this matter and they will all be taken into consideration. It might take several tries, but we are sure that something will work out. Our next General Guild Meeting will be in November, October is the Garage Sale, the Guild will have a table at the Garage Sale if you have items that you don’t want or need, you can donate them to the Guild and the proceeds from the sale will be put into the Guild fund. Sue Creba is working on getting the Members Only section of our website set up. A password will be given to each member and will be changed on a yearly basis. We were fortunate enough to get a supply of Dahlias from Gail Lambourne’s neighbor and we presented them as door prizes to the winning members. The winners were very happy with their bouquets and it was a nice way to start off the Guild year. Thanks to Elaine Cadell for taking on “The Challenge”, Mickey Lemon for hosting the evening Hospitality and Laura Beswick for taking the evening Placemat assignment. Caroll and I would like to welcome all the new Members to our Guild. The Newcomber’s Tea will be held sometime in the next two months and it is a good time for new members to meet the Executive committee and to learn more about the Guild and it’s function. The Food Bank (Loaves and Fishes)

It was wonderful to see that so many members remembered to bring donations for the Food Bank ( Loaves and Fishes) at the September meeting, amidst the organized chaos of settling into a new meeting place! We had 8 boxes, plus some additional bags of food, for those needing assistance to meet their basic food needs.

Our location to drop off your donations is at the left as you come in the left-hand door, facing the elevator. You won’t have to carry any heavy bags of groceries up the stairs! This month, let’s focus on canned goods: fruit and vegetables; beans of all types; canned fish; and as always - peanut butter!!

Donations Committee Report September 2013

Welcome back everyone. While some of us had some lazy days this summer it looks like others hardly took a break from their quilting projects and were cranking out quilts of all sizes and patterns. We were overwhelmed and very

grateful to receive 27 quilts at the Donation table this month. Wow! I am so impressed with our Guild and also humbled by my own meager accomplishments. “Gotta do more….gotta be more!” (a movie quote that comes up in my house from time to time…I know, a bit weird but there it is.) Some members have been wondering about the dimensions of quilts we can most often use, so here is a quick rundown: Baby or crib size…36X36 to 45X45 Preemie size….36X36, flannel back, no batting. Lap size….approximately 45X60 Twin size….approximately 63X87 Wheelchair size…36X40, with double ties at the top so the quilt can be tied to the chair to prevent it sliding off or getting caught. No pockets please. We use mostly baby and lap size quilts. The lap size can be themed for children or adults, male or female. We like to provide a mix to the organizations so they can help as many people as possible. For more details on quilt sizes, who we give to or other donation quilt information please refer to the Guild website. There is an icon on the homepage you can click on or you can access our information through the Membership page.

Remember also that you can have batting precut if you need a special size other than what we usually have available at meetings. Simply email me with the size you need and I will have it at the next meeting for you, afternoon or evening. My email is [email protected] We were happy to also receive a donation of various fabrics this month to use for backings in donation quilts so feel free to stop by and have a look at those at the next meeting. Until next time, thanks to all who donate your time and effort to make quilts for charity. As we all know, a gift of time and energy carries a powerful message of caring and can really give a boost to someone at a low point in life. Happy sewing, Christine Hustins

Placemat Committee

We received 17 placemats at the afternoon meeting and now have a total of 305 placemats, so we are in good shape, but keep them coming. As October is the Garage Sale, please bring them to the November meeting. We have lots of batting and backing still available.

The Placemat Committee will also be collecting the "chemo hats" for the Nanaimo Cancer Clinic and patterns are available at the Placemat table. We will have more information on this at the November meeting. Laura Beswick has kindly volunteered to look after the Placemat Committee table at the evening meetings. Thanks Laura! QUILT SHOW FINAL REPORT- OCTOBER 2013

Well, the quilt show 2013 is behind us and was certainly a success in more ways than one. Our net income was

$23,585.64. The committees came in well within their budgets and some even below. The budgets were reduced from the previous show. We had our wrap up meeting on August 14, and the committees presented us with lots of good suggestions for the next show. There are quite a few members who have agreed to continue on the committee for the next show in 2016. We will be holding meetings during the year with these volunteers to implement some of the changes in the quilt show process. There are still openings for committee chairpersons, so if you are interested in volunteering or want to know what jobs need to be filled, email or call me.([email protected] or 250 245 8345) We also need to congratulate all the members who volunteered to help with the show. We had 180 people helping at the show. Total number of MEMBERS volunteering were 160. Members not participating because of personal or health reasons/etc. were only 27. The participation was outstanding and we as a group are to be congratulated.

In 2013 we had 187 members in the Guild. 80 of the members entered quilts in the show and of those 80, 30 entered 5 or more quilts in the show. There were a total of 344 quilts entered in the show. We are hoping for a larger amount of members to participate in the 2016 show. This is a lot of work and expense to put on a show for a small amount of our Membership. I know that some members are intimidated by the outstanding talent of some of our members and they don’t feel they are good enough…we had some great winners this show and some of them were new quilters and others had entered quilts before, but never won a ribbon, and we also had new members who won ribbons. We hope to get more participation for the next show. This is supposed to be a Guild function and we would like to encourage everyone to enter at least one quilt in the next show in 2016 We are currently looking into a new venue for our next quilt show. The Curling Club is more than willing to accommodate us and we have toured the facility and there seems to be plenty of room to meet all our needs. Here are some of the areas that are being looked into for changes in the next show: Change Call to entry categories and Balloting

Boutique…reviewing the criteria for enteries Volunteers..prioritize the sign up sheets. Certain committees will be filled first. Frames…need more frames and possibly do away with the Black and White rentals. We are looking into having more frames made at a one time expense. Publicity..road signs need to be changed…more specific directions to the show Lillian Charron Co Convener Quilt Show 2013

DID YOU KNOW?

On Saturday, November 23, the Guild will hold its’ 2nd Annual Mini Retreat Day at Oliver Woods Community Centre. This is a good chance to meet other members of the Guild, share skills and conversations and supposedly get some sewing done. Those who attended the retreat last March hoped it would be repeated. But did you know the Guild has held similar programmes in the past? Back in October 1994, the members were complaining the business end of the meetings were taking too long and didn’t leave much time for members to talk and visit. In response, the Programme Committee planned a “Quilt-In.” This was held in the upper lounge of Brechin United Church and was an informal evening for members to sit, sew and chat. Three activities were planned. You could learn Hawaiian Appliqué, redesign an unfinished project (UFO), or bring your own project to work on. Tables were provided for those who brought sewing machines, and comfy chairs and a couch for those who wanted to sit, sew, and relax. Everyone who came out enjoyed the evening and supported the idea of doing it again. In January 1995, the Programme Committee presented a “Stitch & Enjoy” day. You could do your own thing, or learn to make Jacob Ladder blocks, or strip piecing techniques. You could drop in for an hour or two, or stay the entire day. In March, a second Stitch & Enjoy session was held in the evening so those members who could not come out in the day could still participate.

By the fall it was decided to hold the “Quilt & Enjoy” (as it was now called) on a regular basis. Two would be held in the fall, and two in the spring, alternating between day and evening sessions. Although, “doing your own thing” was always promoted, various mini classes were still offered. Some of these classes were: Rail Fence, variation of Baby quilts, learning various binding techniques, making placemats, table runners, embroidered Christmas cards, variations on Log Cabin, and pineapple blocks, stained glass appliqué, potholders, paper piecing ideas, and so on. One of the more interesting “Quilt & Enjoy” sessions was held in April 1997, when Susan Purney Marks, from Victoria, joined us for the day. She presented a slide show of the Paducah Quilt Show, and from Quilt Canada. She brought along several old quilts for her presentation, and then did appraisals on quilts that some of the members brought that evening. The “Quilt & Enjoy” continued for several years with the last one held in 1999. We would like to say “Thank you” to the person who left the envelope of photographs for us at the September meeting, and also to the member who found an old Newsletter from 1988 – it was one we were missing.

Marlene and Merv Jones were invited by Her Honour, the Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, to a tea at Government House in Victoria on September 24, 2013. Marlene is a supporter of the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island and has donated many, many quilts to Jeneece Place. And, before we forget, the Guild started twenty-nine years ago on October 4, 1984 across the street in the Bowen Park complex. Marsha Whittmee and Greta Simmons

Nine Patch Swap

This year you have the opportunity to join in a Nine Patch Swap. If you participate every month you will have 72 nine patch blocks of six different colours ready for a quilt. Here’s what you do. Starting in October, bring in 12 identical 6 ½ inches blocks in a zip lock bag with your name and phone number on the bag. I will take the bags home and exchange the blocks with 12 others so you will get 12 different nine patch blocks the next month. Participate every month or on occasional months, it’s up to you to

decide how often you can join in.

The corner squares and the centre squares are to be the colour of the month colour. The four other squares are a cream colour fabric. Please use 100% cotton plain or tone on tone fabric, batiks work well for this project.

One of the many wonderful quilts from Show and Share

I have been a member of the Guild for quite some time, altho I haven’t been too active of late as I babysit grandchildren full time. Recently I have had a big problem with my robotic quilting system and I would like to get in touch with anyone in the area who has the same equipment as we do.
