This dataset is expected to further increase the geologic understanding of this underexplored basin. This new 2D BasinSPAN™ dataset of the NamibeSPAN program will allow explorers and potential investors alike understand the full structural evolution of the basin and the relationships between the open acreage and the existing fields in context with adjacent basins along the margin. The Namibe Basin is located offshore Southern Angola and Northernmost Namibia, to its North is the Benguela High and to the South is the Walvis Ridge. It is conjugate to the Santos/Campos Basins (BrasilSPAN Phases I-III ION data set available). The basin includes the southernmost extent of the salt province of the West African margin and pinchouts have been identified from the north to the centre of the basin. Since the distribution of salt is poorly defined in the southern part of the basin the new NamibeSPAN program will help define the extent and character of salt as it is key to the hydrocarbon potential of this region. The line orientations of ION’s NamibeSPAN offshore survey, are designed specifically to help understand both the initial extensional phase and the later break-up and transform margin phases which affected the area during the opening of the South Atlantic. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The West African basins have seen an increased level of activity despite the industry downturn, in light of this, ION designed the new NamibeSPAN™ program, to complement its existing data library in the region. The new seismic program in Southern Angola’s Namibe basin is approximately 3,600 km of broadband 2D seismic data.

NamibeSPAN will tie ION’s existing Congo SPAN I & II recently reprocessed data sets offshore Angola (18,905 km) as well as ~ 10,200 km of 2D SPAN data offshore Namibia. Thereby forming a contiguous homogenous regional exploration framework along West Africa’s Angola-Namibia coast thus advancing the understanding of the region. This dataset, which will also tie ION’s SPAN data in the Brazilian conjugate margin, is expected to assist in identifying analogues as well as build a comprehensive regional geological history.

Using data from our BrasilSPAN™ and West Africa SPAN datasets, ION geophysicists and regional petroleum geologists are correlating the conjugate ties between these two regions. The data reveals striking similarities in the structural framework of the petroleum systems on both sides of the Atlantic Margin. For this reason, the Africa programs are designed to tie with our BrasilSPAN datasets, making the programs a valuable tool for exploration and production operators in Africa.

Our earlier CongoSPAN™ I & II programs target the South Atlantic Aptian salt basins offshore Angola (Kwanza, Congo and Benguela basins) and comprises over 18,905 km of 2D data. Those extensive programs were designed with the goal of improving the understanding of the regional geology and the deeper, less explored basins in the area.

In 2018, all CongoSPAN data sets offshore Angola were reprocessed, re-imaged and integrated and we will further integrate them with the NamibeSPAN program seismic data.

KEY COMPONENTS

→ Aid understanding of the entire Namibe basin

→ To refine Crustal limits of the Basins

→ To tie existing wells into the regional framework including ODP and DSDP

→ To understand the limits of known petroleum systems

→ To explore for new play ideas

→ Define better the salt extent and character

Acquisition will begin in September, 2019 with initial deliverables available for license round decision-making later this year.

ABOUT BasinSPAN™BasinSPAN surveys are geologically inspired, basin-scale seismic data programs acquired and depth-imaged using the most advanced geological and geophysical processing tools available. They provide upstream companies with the ability to evaluate the geologic evolution, deep basin architecture and depositional and structural histories of entire petroleum systems in a region. Our global 2D BasinSPAN library consists of data from virtually all major offshore petroleum provinces providing asset managers significant risk mitigation as they develop exploration and appraisal programs with greater confidence.
