2018 Mental Health Education Conference Never Give Up Hope
Keynote Presenters
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale Dr. Elizabeth McIngvale
Elizabeth McIngvale, Ph.D. is the founder of the Peace of Mind
foundation, a non-profit dedicated to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
(OCD). Having been diagnosed with OCD herself, Elizabeth has made it her
life mission to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing mental
illness. Elizabeth is a licensed therapist who received her bachelor’s and
master’s in social work from Loyola University of Chicago and her Ph.D. in
social work at the University of Houston. Today, she proudly serves as an
assistant professor at Baylor University’s Diana R. Garland School of Social
Work. Overall, Elizabeth is dedicated to giving a voice to the voiceless.
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is a Texas-grown phenomenon who
knows how to “Save You Money, TODAY!” In 1981, Mack and his wife,
Linda, started Gallery Furniture with five thousand dollars and a dream.
Mack began television advertising early on, and with his motto of “Early to
bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise,” he quickly became a
household name. Mack’s strong work ethic is matched by his philanthropy
and exceeded only by the commitment he has to his family. He has made
many charitable contributions, including co-founding the Peace of Mind
foundation.

The American Red Cross is funding a collaborative project
between NAMI Gulf Coast and the Gulf Coast Center that will
allow NAMI GC to provide Ending the Silence presentations.
Ending the Silence is a program which provides support, at
no-cost, to Galveston and Brazoria County’s youth groups,
students, organizations, and school staff affected by the
disaster of Hurricane Harvey. Ending the Silence is a
prevention and early intervention program that engages youth
ages 12 to 18 in a discussion about mental health, and
addresses warning signs, situations and basic symptoms of
mental distress. Ending the Silence gives hope, education, and
resources to young people who may be struggling with mental
illness. The objective is to break the stigma on mental illness and
bring awareness on an often-misunderstood topic.
NAMI GC and Ending the Silence will also help young people
understand their situation, identify coping skills and manage
stress, as well as link to other recovery services if necessary.
Families are still experiencing a variety of emotional distress in
the ongoing recovery process of Hurricane Harvey, and the
program provides needed emotional and social support. Many
families still have not been able to replace cars that were
destroyed and many people still do not have their jobs back,
which were lost due to property damages to local employers.
A significant amount of residents are not yet back in their homes,
and a lack of affordable housing in the area keeps many
d isplaced. A l l of these ci rcumstances cause
compounding distress, which has created a need for
counseling and education support in Galveston and Brazoria
Counties. We are very grateful to the American Red Cross for
bringing this program to our community.
This Hurricane Harvey recovery project was funded in part by a
grant from the American Red Cross.
Thank you American Red Cross!

Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a
mental health condition. However, mental illness affects everyone
directly or indirectly through family, friends, or coworkers. Despite
mental illnesses’ reach and prevalence, stigma and
misunderstanding are also, unfortunately, widespread.
Every year, during the first week of October, NAMI and participants
across the county raise awareness of mental illness. Each year, we
educate the public, fight stigma and provide support. And each year,
our movement grows stronger.
We believe that mental health conditions are important to discuss
year-round, but highlighting them during Mental Illness Awareness
Week provides a dedicated time for mental health advocates across
the country to come together as one unified voice. Since 1990,
when Congress officially established the first full week of October as
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), advocates have worked
together to sponsor activities, large or small, to educate the public
about mental illness.
This year, NAMI Gulf Coast, along with other NAMI organizations, will
promote the theme of “Cure Stigma” throughout all awareness
events, including Mental Illness Awareness Week which takes place
from Oct. 7-13th .
Why is this theme important? As you may know, one in 5 Americans
are affected by mental health conditions. Stigma is toxic to their
mental health because it creates an environment of shame, fear and
silence that prevents many people from seeking help and treatment.
The perception of mental illness won’t change unless we act to
change it. Compassion, empathy and understanding are the
antidote. Your voice can spread the cure.

It is the mission of NAMI Gulf Coast to provide support, education, and service advocacy for families and individuals affected by mental illness. Eliminating the stigma of mental illness is the primary goal for NAMI Gulf Coast. The hope is that one day mental illness will be treated with the same compassion and understanding as any other illness.
