Fertilizers are used to supply nutrients to
plants and spur the fertility in soil. The
nutrients in fertilizers are able to increase
crop production on farms, prevent diseases
and improve the quality of food. Different
types of fertilizers are available for various
plants, grasses and foods, and it's important
to use the proper fertilizer in a lawn, garden
or farm.
Nitrogen fertilizer is commonly used on grass
and is important for overall plant growth. The
amount of nitrogen fertilizer used is going to
depend on the species of grass, and
overapplying may be harmful in some
circumstances and seep into groundwater.
This can have a negative effect on sea
plants and animal life. Once the nitrogen
fertilizer is applied to grass, the plants
immediately begin feeding on it and growing.
Applying nitrogen fertilizer when the grass is
wet prevents the fertilizer from burning the
grass or causing it to change colors.
Limestone fertilizer is used to restore infertile
soil and balance out acidic soil that has
been ruined by other types of fertilizers. This
type of fertilizer is a powder and stimulates
the bacterial activity in soil that has been
dormant by raising the levels of pH.
Limestone fertilizers also add calcium to the
soil and should be applied in the fall. It's
important to wear the proper face and hand
protection, because the fertilizer is dusty and
may get into a person's lungs.

Ammonium sulfate fertilizer is a common soil
fertilizer that reduces the rate of pH in
alkaline soils. The fertilizer is a spray and
may be used to fight off lawn diseases by
increasing the acidity in the soil. This
fertilizer may be on lawns where the grass is
often bent, such as golf courses and parks.
Those living in the Kentucky area also use
ammonium sulfate fertilizer to prevent
diseases from ruining the bluegrass in the
state. The bluegrass is affected by the
different climates and needs to have a
steady pH.
