TYPES OF TEETH
Four Types of Teeth:
1. Incisors: single rooted, sharp cutting edge, anterior teeth.
2. Cuspids/Canines/ “Eye Teeth”: single rooted, single cusp, strong, designed for tearing food, anterior teeth.
3. Premolars/Bicuspids: posteriors teeth, two cusps, designed for grasping and tearing food. First bicuspid has two roots. Second bicuspid are single rooted.
4. Molars: posterior teeth broad and chewing surface, four or more cusps. Maxillary Molars: three roots Mandibular Molars: two roots

Universal Numbering System: (assuming all permanent teeth are present)
Maxillary Arch: 1 - 16; beginning upper right first tooth around to upper left last tooth.
Mandibular Arch: 17 - 32; beginning lower left first tooth around to lower right last tooth.
Surfaces of the Teeth: the names of the tooth surfaces are used to describe a specific area of the tooth.
Buccal: surface of tooth is next to cheek. Lingual: surface of tooth is facing tongue. Distal: surface of tooth toward back of mouth. Mesial: surface of tooth toward front of mouth. Facial: surface of tooth is next to cheek and lips. Labial: surface of anterior tooth is facing lip. Occlusal: chewing surface of posterior.

SURFACES (SIDES) OF A POSTERIOR TOOTH
Lingual: the large flat surface of an anterior tooth directly opposite the labial (facial) surface on the tongue side of the tooth is referred to as the buccal surface. Its abbreviated “L”.
Mesial: the tooth surface nearest the midline (middle of the body) is called the mesial surface, “M”. This a proximal surface.
Proximal Surfaces: the mesial and distal surfaces of teeth are referred to as proximal surfaces. Proximal described the surface of a tooth that touches another tooth. The term Interproximal refers to the area between two teeth. Interproximal dental caries refers to dental caries (decay) between two teeth. Interproximal dental caries is common and is caused by inadequate removal of plaque or food from between teeth after eating. If patients would remove the plaque and food from between the teeth daily with dental floss or toothpicks, they would have fewer problems with both Interproximal dental caries and periodontal (gum) disease.
Distal: the tooth surfaces that is the farthest distance away from the midline is referred to as the distal surface, “D”. This is also a proximal surface.
Clinical Crown: that part of the crown of a tooth visible in the oral cavity. Synonym: corona clinica
Anatomical Crown: that portion of the tooth normally covered by, and including, enamel.

Posterior Teeth: made up of premolars (bicuspids and molars. Think of posterior teeth as short fat boxes or shoe boxes. The names of only two surfaces of posterior teeth are different from the wording used to describe the surfaces of anterior teeth.
Occlusal: the broad tooth surface used for chewing and grinding food and is abbreviated “O”. This surface is bordered by the points, or cusp tips, of the tooth. Cusp tips correspond to the Incisal edges of anterior teeth.
Gingival: abbreviated “G”, its the area of the tooth nearest the gingival (gum) tissue, circling from buccal to lingual, through mesial and distal surfaces.
Buccal (Facial): the large tooth surface facing toward the cheek or face and is abbreviated “B”. This surface corresponds to the labial (facial) surface on an anterior tooth. This surface can also be referred to as facial, “F”, but buccal is used more commonly for posterior teeth since these posterior surfaces are opposite the cheeks more than the face.
