Testing
Every week your child will be sent home
with 8 words to learn (2 high frequency
words and 6 words which contain the
spelling pattern or phonics sounds of the
week).
On Friday they will be tested on the 8 words
which were sent home, plus an additional
two unseen word which will contain the
spelling/phonics patterns for that week.

Some different ‘hands on’ ways for your
child to practise their spellings
Play Dough Words - use play dough to form letters to spell out each
word.
Pipe Cleaner Words - use pipe cleaners and bend and form to
make letters used to write out the words.
Stamp It - use alphabet stamps and ink pads to stamp out words or
let child use fingerprints to write words if you don't have letter
stamps.
Finger Paint - let them get messy and have some sensory fun and
finger paint to spell their words
Type It - let them type their spelling words on the computer/iPad/
laptop.
Rainbow Words - spell words using different coloured markers or
crayons for each letter.
Salt/Sand/Flour Tray - spell words using finger or paintbrush. Put
coloured construction paper under the salt, sand or flour to make
the letters really stand out.
Trace - let them trace their words on your palm/hand. Have them
focus on properly forming each letter so you can feel it being
drawn.
Shaving Cream - Make a thin layer of shaving cream on a tray and
use a paintbrush or better yet a fingertip to spell out the words.
Trace in the Air - watch as children trace the letters in the air to
spell each word.
Glue & Glitter - Write out spelling words in glue and sprinkle some
glitter on top.
Window Writing - use Crayola Window Markers and write words on
windows or sliding glass doors. They wash off easily and writing on
windows or doors is so much more fun than boring old paper

Welcome to Wordsworth’s Magic Spell Book!
This book has been carefully designed to make sure that your child
has a rich spelling curriculum. Here are some of the ingredients
which you can expect to see in Wordsworth’s Magic Spell Book.
1. A dash of fabulous phonics
This is when children learn to spell using sounds and the letters or
groups of letters (graphemes) which make that sound.
igh—sigh, high, fright, might, sight, light
i-e—bike, hike, like, ride, side, wise, rise
2. A splash of high frequency words
These are common irregular or commonly mis-spelt words that need
to be practiced regularly.
3. A sprinkling of Magical morphemes
Morphemes are basically about understanding chunks of meaning
inside words. For example, it might be learning about compound
words, root words or affixes.
Hopefully, this booklet will explain a few of the tricky things you will
need to remember.

Definitions:
Compound Words:
A compound word is a word made up of two other words:
football, headrest, broomstick, etc.
Root Word
A root word is a word to which prefixes and suffixes can be added
to make other words; for example in unclear, clearly and cleared,
the root word is clear.

Affix
An affix is a small unit of meaning (morpheme) which is not a word
itself but can be attached to a word. An affix can be a prefix or suf-
fix.
Prefix
A prefix is a morpheme which can be added to the beginning of a
word to change its meaning. For example:
inedible
disappear
untie
Suffix
A suffix is a morpheme which is added to the end of a word. There
are two main categories:
Some suffixes change the tense or grammatical status of the word,
e.g. from present tense to past tense (work—worked).
Other suffixes change the word class, e.g. from verb to noun (work—
worker) or noun to adjective (accident—accidental).
In accordance with the New National Curriculum 2014, KS1 pupils
will be expected to know and use the terms: compound word, root
word, affix, prefix and suffix.

To become a magical speller, you will need to know which letters of
the alphabet are vowels and which are consonants.
These are the five vowels in the alphabet. You just need to learn
them off by heart!
All the other letters are consonants.
When you start to learn spelling rules, this will really help you. For ex-
ample, very soon you will learn about the suffix ‘ed’.
Adding ‘ed’
Just add ‘ed’ to the end of a word (look—looked) unless you need
to use one of these rules:
If the word ends in ‘y’, you change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and add
‘ed’. reply—replied.
If the root word ends in ‘e’, you drop the ‘e’ then add ‘ed’.
If the root word has a short vowel sound and a single consonant,
you double the consonant and add ‘ed’.
You will definitely need to know which letters are vowels and which
ones are consonants!
