PRINCIPAL’S NOTES

Coonabarabran Horse Expo Congratulations to Victoria Monk and Airlie Smith who performed well at the Coonabarabran Horse Expo last week. Among many achievements, they won the prestigious Best Presented Small School from a line up of approximately 400 horses. Many thanks to the girls’ parents for transporting and helping supervise the girls. Thank you also to the team manager Mrs Mulligan.

District Cross Country We are very proud of all of our competitors, who represented our school exceptionally well at the Cross Country in Geurie last Wednesday. Bailey Thompson has progressed to the Western Level.

Infants Pyjama Party Our Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 students had a wonderful time farewelling Mrs Currall with a Pyjama Party last Thursday. We all wish her the very best for the future!

HSC Seminars Our Year 12 students attended the annual HSC Seminars last Friday, with workshops held by HSC markers and experienced teachers. This is always a very valuable experience.

Athletics Carnival a Huge Success Last Friday we had a great turn out of parents, carers and community members joining us to support the students. Thank you to the many parents who volunteered to help. The students participated very well and with great sportsmanship. Photos from the carnival and Age Champions will be in next week’s newsletter. Goonoo were victorious on the day!

Spelling Bee Today we will be holding The Primary Spelling Bee Finals. Good luck to all participants.

Kindergarten The Infants (K-2) were very busy last week. We said goodbye and good luck to Mrs Currall with a Pyjama Party on Thursday. We thank Mrs Currall for all her hard work and dedication to the Yr1/2 Class, she is now on leave awaiting the arrival of her little bundle of joy! We dressed accordingly and found that wearing your pyjamas to school in this weather is definitely a winner! What a fantastic effort on Friday at our Athletics Carnival from all K-2 students. It was great to see everyone participating and really enjoying themselves. Kindergarten students will be receiving a Red Slip in recognition of their positive behaviour and participation on the day. I would particularly like to say a very big thank you to the Sport Co-ordinators, Mrs Skinner and Mrs Norwood for all their hard work in organising the whole carnival and also the Infants events. This week we will revise the sound “v” as in van and introduce the two “oo” sounds, as in book and soon. We writing some great sight word sentences and continue to improve our reading skills. In Maths we are looking at area; the space (surface area) a shape covers or takes up. Have a great week.

Year 5/6 Congratulations on everyone that attended the Mendooran Central School Athletics Carnival on Friday. It was such an amazing day with all students participating and enjoying themselves. I know how hard some students have been training for their events and it was incredible to see the rapid improvement over this term. A special congratulations to all our champions on the day. I know how hard all of you have worked and it has certainly paid off! Just a quick reminder this Friday, 14th June, is the cut off date for Year 6 shirts. I will be placing the orders early next week so please make sure you have returned your note and money. Our Major Primary Excursion is coming up fast so please make sure your note has been returned. This week in Spelling we are focusing on the “i” as in rice sound. This is can be a tricky vowel sound as there are some interesting ways to make this phoneme: “i” as in rice, “y” as in fly, “igh” as in night, “I” as in spider, “ie” as in pie. In Mathematics we are continuing our focus on whole number. This is an in depth topic that may take numerous weeks for our students to become confident with some of the concepts. Have a great week everyone!

Year 1/2 This week, Mr and Mrs Elith will be taking the class. Sound and Spelling is based around the “i-e” sound. Maths will be covering 2D concepts and flip, slide and turning shapes. We are doing performances for writing with acting. In Science and Geography we are looking at Materials and Rainforests. We will be doing some football skills on Friday. Please return absentee notes. Have a great week.

Primary District Cross Country Well done to the students that participated in the Cross Country at Geurie last Wednesday. Competition was very strong on the day and our students displayed excellent behaviour and sportsmanship. Bailey Thompson secured his spot at the Western Level placing 1st in the 11yr boys Multi-class event. Cooper Thompson placed 6th in the 8/9yr boys and Brandi Bailey placed 8th in the 8/9yr girls, unfortunately not progressing to the next level due to only the top four qualifying. Thank you to the parents that helped transport the students to Geurie on the day.

North West Equestrian Expo Over 400 riders and their horses gathered at Coonabarabran last week for the 2019 North West Equestrian Schools Expo. Victoria Monk and Airlie Smith took their place amongst the other students and proved that small public schools can compete with some of the biggest private schools in the state. Their success began on the Sunday when both girls placed in the 60cm One Day Event – Victoria 7th and Airlie 9th. On Monday Victoria competed in three 80cm Show Jumping events, finishing 1st, 4th and 10th. These achievements saw her take out the Reserve Champion for 80cm Show Jumping. Tuesday saw another haul of ribbons: Airlie - 1st in her Pleasure Hack and 2nd in her Bareback class Victoria - 1st in her Pleasure Hack, 2nd in the Horse Most Suited to Expo and 3rd in her Bareback class. The two girls then combined with Macquarie Anglican Grammar School students, Anna Ward and Clair Stiff, to come 3rd in the Team Hunt. The jewel in the crown was their final achievement. The two girls took out the highly prestigious “Best Presented Small School”, judged during the final grand parade. Victoria and Airlie are to be congratulated on the marvellous effort they put into turning themselves and their horses out so spectacularly. They proudly represented all students at Mendooran Central with competitive spirit, sportsmanship and exemplary behaviour. Well done Airlie and Victoria.

Wednesday 28th May, 17 Secondary boys and girls travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Central Schools Touch Football competition. The weather was not so good, actually absolutely freezing, however our students braved the cold and played 4 round games throughout the day.

The girls faced very strong teams in Dunedoo and Molong in their first two matches and were soundly defeated. After that they drew against Coolah Central, with Victoria Monk scoring a nice try, and suffered a narrow loss to Trangie. The girls were wonderful ambassadors for our school and should be congratulated on their efforts and sportsmanship on the day. Well done to Mackenzie Harvey, Jemayah Bailey, Janet Hellyer, Felicity Cook, Victoria Monk, Ella Hartley, Emma Adams, Kayleigh Rutter, Amy Adams and Aisha Konza.

The boys came up against Dunedoo in our first game of the day. Our team a little nervous at the start, developed momentum after two run away tries were scored and won the game. In this game we unfortunately lost a player to injury, but this did not stop Mendooran Central School, our boys team won the 3 out of 4 round games, placing Mendooran Central School first in our pool. In the finals we played Molong. This team was definitely the hardest for the day, as our boys were starting to fatigue with only one sub. Well done on an amazing effort you all played in the final. Although we lost by one try, you all played extremely well and I am a very proud coach of your sportsmanship, team cohesiveness and talent displayed throughout the day. Well done Carter Swan, Oscar Monk, Jesse Dennis, Bailey Tincknell, Joseph Frohmuller, Tobias Bowler, Cameron Bowler and Malcolm Hellyer.

I would like to thank all the parents and carers who transported our students on the day. A massive thank you to Mrs Mulligan on coaching the girl’s team throughout the last 12 months. Also thank you to Mrs Mulligan who refereed our boys games on the day.

Earn and Learn is continuing and we are extremely happy with the number of stickers that are being dropped

in daily to the Front Office.

Keep them coming in as every

sticker counts!

Cans and bottles can be put into the shuttle at the back gate of the school for recycling. This will help

reduce the price of the Secondary School Excursion to the snow. Thank you in advance for helping out.
