1. How many steps are in a chicken’s life cycle? ____________________________________2. List the steps in order. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________3. Identify the meaning of the word tend. ____________________________________

The life cycle of a chicken has five steps. The mother hen lays an egg. Inside this egg, there is a baby chick. She sits on the egg to keep it warm until it hatches. Once the egg hatches, the chick comes out slowly and dries itself off. The mother hen tends, or takes care of, the baby chick until the chick can take care of itself. If the chick is a hen, when it grows up it will lay an egg, too.

Finally, the life cycle is complete and the frog is now a fully grown amphibian.

1. What is another word for larva? ____________________________________2. What is a chrysalis? ____________________________________3. What are butterfly's wings like when it comes out of the chrysalis?________________________________________________________________________

A butterfly life cycle has five stages. The first stage of a butterfly’s life is an egg. The egg starts out as a tiny sphere that is attached to a leaf or plant stem. It hatches from the egg and becomes a larva, or caterpillar. It doesn’t stay a caterpillar forever. After it gets big and fat, it forms into a chrysalis, which is a like a cocoon. Once the chrysalis hatches, the butterfly comes out with wet wings. It slowly airs its wings out until they are dry, then flutters away as a butterfly.
